Chapter 408: Chapter 408: Reflection

’This mirror ...’

It wasn’t just dangerous. It was malicious.

Items like this were classified as cursed objects, things that didn’t just harm but manipulated, twisted perception, and devoured lives without leaving a trace.

It had already destroyed Vicky’s family. Three lives.

And now... It was likely going to claim Vicky as well.

A deep unease settled in her chest. ’It won’t stop... not until every last victim is gone.’

Otherwise, why would fate, or something worse, pull the brothers back to that house?

Why would his brother insist on bringing that mirror back?

Nothing about this felt like coincidence.

Lana looked at Vicky, her voice firm. "I’ll reopen your case. I’ll get you out of here."

But Vicky slowly shook his head. "It’s useless," he murmured.

His voice was empty. "I don’t want to live anymore. There’s no one left for me."

His lips curved into a faint, broken smile. "As long as that mirror is destroyed... I’ll be satisfied."

Lana clenched her fists tightly. "You’re giving up too easily. Why not stay and see what happens? Maybe something will change."

Vicky didn’t respond. He only smiled faintly... and closed his eyes.

Something in Lana’s chest tightened sharply.

"Hey..."

She instinctively stepped forward to shake him...but the moment her fingers brushed against his arm... Cold.

Her eyes widened in shock as she stumbled back.

"Monica!"

Monica rushed forward immediately, her expression turning serious as she checked his pulse.

A few seconds later, she froze. "He’s... dead."

The words fell like stones. A heavy silence followed. This wasn’t normal. Not at all.

Vicky had been perfectly fine moments ago.

But the instant he began talking about the mirror...his face had grown paler. Weaker.

Lana’s mind raced. ’Was it the truth talisman...? Did I make a mistake?’

But when they tested the same talisman on others... nothing happened.

No harm. No side effects. Which meant...

"It wasn’t the talisman," Lana muttered under her breath, her expression darkening.

"It was the mirror."

Somehow...Somewhere... It had reached him. Killed him.

Even inside a prison cell. Even under their watch. A surge of anger rose within her.

Without wasting time, she pulled up the surveillance footage.

The grainy video flickered to life. They watched in silence.

And then...it happened. While Vicky was speaking, he suddenly paused.

His eyes shifted slightly...as if he had seen something.

A reflection. It flashed for only a moment. But it was enough. A look of pure despair spread across his face.

Not fear. Not confusion. But certainty. As if he already knew...he was going to die.

And yet...he continued speaking. Finishing his story.

As if hoping...someone would uncover the truth.

Lana’s fists clenched tightly. Her entire body trembled with fury.

"This thing..." she muttered, her voice cold.

"This is the first time something like this has killed someone right under my nose."

That wasn’t just dangerous. That was unacceptable.

If this cursed object continued...more people would die. And she would never allow that.

She turned toward Monica, her expression grim. "We need to destroy it. Completely."

Monica hesitated, her brows furrowing. "I can’t come. There are several special cases that require my attention."

Lana paused and then smiled faintly. "It’s fine. I’ll go alone."

There was no fear in her voice. Only determination.

’Besides...’ she thought, a spark of excitement flickering within her, ’I’ve been close to breaking through recently.’

The ghost essence had pushed her cultivation forward rapidly. She could feel it.

She was close to reaching the Heaven rank. This would be the perfect opportunity to stabilize it.

With that, she waved lightly. "I’ll handle it."

Soon, Lana stood in front of the address Vicky had given her.

The key turned with a soft click. The door creaked open.

To an ordinary person, it would seem like a dark, quiet room with the lights off.

But to Lana...it was completely different.

A thick, suffocating mass of dark energy filled the space, swirling like black smoke.

The temperature dropped instantly, a biting cold wrapping around her skin despite the bright sunlight outside.

She stepped inside slowly. Calm. Unbothered.

At her current level, even a three-hundred-year-old ghost wouldn’t pose much of a threat.

The living room was empty. Too empty. Lana frowned slightly as her eyes scanned the surroundings.

Then...she saw it. A brown mirror hanging directly opposite the entrance. Waiting.

A faint chuckle escaped her lips as she walked toward it.

When she stood before it, the mirror reflected her perfectly... Or at least, it tried to.

She paused. Then suddenly she laughed.

Her laughter echoed sharply in the cold room, light yet unsettling.

Perched on her shoulder, Mr. Crow shivered slightly. "Don’t laugh like that... even I’m getting scared."

Lana wiped the corner of her eye, still smiling faintly. "This thing is ridiculous."

She tilted her head, staring at the reflection.

"It’s trying to imitate me... but it forgot something."

Her gaze sharpened. "Look closely."

She raised her hand slightly. "In the reflection..."

Her voice dropped into a cold whisper. "It only has four fingers."

The moment Lana pointed it out, the mirror seemed to react.

As if it had suddenly realized its own mistake.

The reflection flickered...and in the blink of an eye, the missing finger reappeared.

It corrected itself.

Mr. Crow blinked in disbelief, his tiny claws tightening slightly on Lana’s shoulder. "...It fixed it."

He fell silent for a moment, then muttered under his breath, "You really know how to bully even ghosts..."

Lana only smirked faintly, her eyes still locked onto the mirror.

Then...something shifted. In the reflection, a streak of darkness flashed past her back.

Fast and sharp. Like something rushing straight toward her.

But Lana didn’t move. Not even a flicker of panic crossed her face.

Instead, she tilted her head slightly, her gaze filled with curiosity. ’Is that all?’

Her lips curled into a faint, almost mocking smile. "Do you really think something like this will scare me?"

Her tone was light, almost disappointed. "I expected more."
