Genshin Impact: I'm The Envoy of Snezhnaya-Chapter 313: I’m A Fatui
Chapter 313: I’m A Fatui
"Let go of me! Don’t touch my tail! My ears are off-limits too! Meow!"
Diona continued to struggle, but Bai Luo seemed extremely experienced at dealing with this kind of resistance.
No matter how hard she tried, her sharp claws couldn’t touch him at all.
"Diona, why did you come out here by yourself?"
Compared to Bai Luo’s blatant cat-petting, Draff was far more concerned about Diona’s safety.
Running all the way out here alone... it was simply too dangerous.
"Because... because... hmph!"
Diona wanted to say that she had come out because she was worried about her father.
But once she imagined how happy her father would be if he heard that—happy enough to drink, and once he drank, to turn back into that drunken mess—all those words collapsed into a single, slightly aggrieved snort.
"Mr. Bai, I’m sorry you had to see that."
After soothing his daughter, Draff finally turned to Bai Luo with an embarrassed expression.
During the journey back, he had gotten fairly familiar with Bai Luo.
Although this young man looked unfamiliar, when it came to many things about Mondstadt, he spoke in great detail.
What satisfied Draff the most, however, was the escort itself.
Along the way, they hadn’t encountered a single Slime or Hilichurl—let alone Fatui patrols in the wild.
Whether it was because this young man was lucky, or because the monsters were afraid of him, the fact remained that Bai Luo had brought him back safe and sound.
"There’s one hundred and fourteen thousand Mora here—everything I currently have on me. If you think it’s not enough, you can come back to Springvale with me first. I’ll give you a number you’ll be satisfied with."
Draff took out his money pouch and spoke sincerely.
As the head hunter of Springvale, he was confident he could pay a commission worthy of Bai Luo.
"Mora won’t be necessary. I’ve already received the reward I wanted."
With one hand, Bai Luo held Diona up; with the other, he gently scratched under her chin.
Not only did he narrow his eyes in satisfaction—even Diona, who was dangling in his grip, blissfully squinted as well, letting out an oddly contented purring sound.
He’d teased foxes and tanuki before—how could an aloof little cat possibly be any harder?
"Th-this... but I promised you payment."
If it were anyone else, they might have been delighted to save some money.
But as Springvale’s head hunter, Draff was a man who kept his word.
"Money, you see... I have lots of friends, and they’re all rich, so I don’t really lack it. Besides..."
Bai Luo smiled, glancing at the Diona still in his hand.
"I’ve already gotten what I needed."
Was he planning to take Diona with him?
Of course not.
To him, the best reward for this job was petting a cat.
Now that he’d already done that, there was no reason to take the commission.
"...Alright."
After hearing Bai Luo’s words, Draff felt even more confused. What did his friends being rich have to do with him? Were they giving him money or something?
Still, as a kind-hearted hunter, Draff decided to help this equally kind young man in another way.
"By the way, where are you headed next? As Mondstadt’s best hunter, I might be able to give you some exclusive advice."
Even if this young man already knew Mondstadt well, a hunter’s experience was still valuable.
Offering that experience could also make up for the commission Bai Luo had refused.
"I... will probably go take a look over there first."
Bai Luo replied, gesturing vaguely ahead.
Bai Luo withdrew the hand he’d been using to tease Diona and pointed toward the northwest.
"Windrise? Or Starsnatch Cliff?"
Judging by the direction Bai Luo indicated, the experienced Draff immediately guessed the possible destinations.
After all, over there, those were the places most frequently visited by adventurers.
"Starsnatch Cliff, I suppose. I’m going to see if there’s someone I want to meet."
In truth, Bai Luo’s destination wasn’t Starsnatch Cliff at all, but he didn’t want to expose his real itinerary, so he casually made something up.
Some might ask—why not just avoid pointing out any direction at all?
In reality, this was exactly the kind of smokescreen Bai Luo liked to throw out.
If someone in Mondstadt really intended to investigate him, this little misdirection could produce surprisingly good results.
"Starsnatch Cliff, huh... that’s pretty far."
Just the journey back from Dadaupa Gorge had already been long enough.
He hadn’t expected Bai Luo’s target to be even farther than the road they’d just traveled together.
"How about this—I’ll draw you a route. If you follow it, you can avoid most Hilichurl camps. But you’ll need to be careful of Fatui patrols along the way. Unlike monsters, they don’t have fixed settlements—you can run into them at any time."
As Draff spoke, he took out the map he’d recovered from the Hilichurl camp and marked a relatively safe route on it.
What he didn’t notice, however, was that when he mentioned Bai Luo should be careful of the Fatui soldiers, the latter’s expression became subtly strange.
"Don’t worry. The Fatui can’t hurt me."
"You must be talking about the Fatui you’ve seen in the city, right? Those Snezhnayans in Mondstadt are diplomats—they naturally won’t make a move. But the skirmishers out in the wild are different. They’re fiercer than monsters themselves... Alright, just follow this route and you should be fine."
Bai Luo’s words didn’t strike Draff as odd.
Not just Bai Luo—many ordinary people who lived in Mondstadt for a long time believed that Fatui soldiers weren’t particularly dangerous.
But as someone who hunted regularly in the wild, Draff knew all too well how terrifying those Fatui troops could be.
It was said that some children who happened to encounter Fatui skirmishers on the road would simply vanish without a trace.
Yet whether the parents went to Mondstadt to confront the Fatui, or the Knights of Favonius personally paid them a visit, the Fatui’s response was always the same:
"Not us. Don’t slander us. We didn’t do it."
This was also one of the reasons Draff never allowed Diona to go hunting alone.
If one day his precious daughter were to fall into the Fatui’s hands, there would be nowhere for him to cry.
"They really can’t hurt me."
Handing Diona back to Draff, Bai Luo took the map, carefully folded it, and gave him a bright, sunny smile.
"I’m a high-ranking member of the Fatui. How would the subordinates dare to hurt their superior?"
Draff: "???"
"Thanks for the map. Until we meet again, Mr. Draff."
Bai Luo was very satisfied with Draff’s expression. He reached out once more, tugged lightly on Diona’s ear, and before she could react, turned and left.
It wasn’t until he’d gone far away that Draff finally realized something.
He had actually spent all that time together with a Fatui Harbinger?!
What made his scalp go numb was that he had even watched that man lift his precious daughter, all while telling him to be careful of the Fatui.
If he’d accidentally offended that man...
He didn’t even dare imagine the consequences.
