Chapter 98: Genetic Repair (1)

Jess didn’t like the sound of those words. The catwoman furrowed her brows and glared at the priestess – an act she didn’t know she was doing.

"..."

The prince was not sure how to react to Caleb’s obvious advances. Osbourne thought the catwoman was Caleb’s, but it seemed the man was interested in the priestess as well.

Noticing the quiet air that settled among the group, Caleb decided to change topics.

"If there’s nothing else, can you lead me to His Majesty? I can begin right away." His gaze shifted to the covered body on the ground and added. "And don’t worry about the other commanders, they’re all fine and will be returning with the demon generals soon."

"Huh?"

This got everyone’s attention.

"What do you mean?" Commander Fred asked with raised brows. "I thought you took care of them."

"I did." Caleb nodded. "But I also figured you guys might want answers from them, so I left them alive – just barely. Also, I took away their ability to do magic. They’re basically just muscle brains at this point."

"..."

Caleb just knew how to leave everyone speechless with his absurd words and actions. Here they were, still processing the new information they just learnt, only for Caleb to drop more ’casual’ bombs.

"T-that’s good to know." Celistra chipped in, afraid they’d be standing here for eternity. "My prince, why don’t you lead the way..." The priestess gestured.

"Ah, yes..." Osbourne instructed the knights around to take care of Rudy’s body before turning to lead Caleb towards the castle.

"Keep an eye on her for me, Commander." Caleb said to Fred while he patted the catwoman on the head. "I’ll be out soon."

........

Walking through the castle walls was a new experience for Caleb. He still wasn’t sure if he was in another world.

Everything around him spoke of a luxury he had only seen on Earth—the smooth, plastered walls, the grand tapestries and paintings of kings and nobles, and the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, casting a warm, golden glow.

His fingers brushed against the cool stone as he took it all in. The air carried a faint scent of lavender, and the quiet footsteps of servants barely broke the silence.

’Wow...’

That was the only thing that came to his mind. Even he hadn’t seen this kind of luxury back on Earth.

’It sure is nice to have lots of money...’ There was no rush for him. ’Building myself and strength is my priority now...’ He had a lot of plans for the future.

This was his world now, and he was going to find his place in it.

Putting those thoughts aside, Caleb also noticed something off about some of the knights and servants roaming the place. It got him wondering if this was normal.

"Prince Osbourne..." He called softly. "I don’t know if it’s just me... but some of your people have a problem."

Osbourne paused for a moment, turning to look at Caleb. He more or less knew what Caleb was talking about. But what surprised him was the fact that he could ’see’ it.

’Why am I even surprised?’ The prince chided himself. ’With all the things he’s capable of, seeing the corrupted people among the palace workers shouldn’t even be an issue for him.’

Caleb noticed the look on the prince’s face and realized he knew as well. The same look was on Daphne’s face as well.

"Let’s get back to this once I’m done with your family." Caleb suggested. "One problem at a time."

.....

"Is he the one?" Anastasia asked with hope in her eyes.

The man before her was a total stranger, good-looking, but a complete mystery. The soft glow in his eyes, the confident air around him and his all-black outfit made him stand out.

"Yes, mother." Osbourne nodded, turning to face Celistra. "There’s a lot you’ll have to you know, but that can wait..."

While the mother and son pair were talking, Caleb was busy observing the king from a distance. He may have been allowed to enter the chamber, but until he was given the go-ahead, he couldn’t touch the king.

He turned his head to the side, where the princess sat quietly, staring into nothingness.

’Pretty.’ Caleb noted. ’It’s unfortunate a girl like her ended up being born like this...’ He was glad he was granted the power to help.

Quietly releasing his domain sense, he made a quick scan of the king and the princess, getting a complete map of their body and genetic profile.

’What the hell happened?’ He was mildly surprised to see the damage to the king’s genome. ’For someone or something to be able to specifically target the active genes for those functions is scary...

’No wonder the system said to repair genetic damage...’

What Caleb saw was not a mutation in the genes responsible for the mana channels in the king’s body, but rather the destruction of said genes.

It was why general healing could not change the outcome. Without expressing the proteins and products that make up the mana channels, healing would be pointless.

"Caleb...?" Celistra called out to Caleb, noticing his distant gaze. "Are you alright? This is the third time I called your name."

"Oh, sorry." Caleb snapped out of his analysis and focused on the people before him. "What did you say...?"

"We’re ready for you." Celistra gestured to the king lying in the bed.

"Wait." Queen Anastasia suddenly said, stopping Caleb before he could even move. "Must he make contact with the King to do his thing...?" She was still defensive.

Everyone turned to Caleb, waiting for his response.

"Not necessarily." Caleb shrugged. "If you want, I can even show you the entire process of what I’ll be doing."

Anastasia and Osbourne exchanged glances before nodding.

"Please do."

"As you wish," Caleb nodded and instructed the system.

He discovered that through his domain sense, he could extend his mana outward into visible turquoise blue particles that the system could utilize to create an interactive 3D holographic display visible to those around him.

Under the curious eyes of everyone, Caleb slowly let his mana seep out, creating a mesmerizing display of mana particles that came together and gradually took shape.
