Chapter 142: The meaning of God’s Trial

As he watched from above the onslaught of his thousands of summonings wiping out the +150,000 inhabitants here, Elliot somehow longed for a day when such a thing would be possible in the real world.

Not destroy cities, but could he ever have that many summonings?

’Probably not.’ He thought, smiling.

To create a summoning, he needed to grant them Stat Points. And getting stat points was getting harder and harder. There simply wasn’t a trick to exploit there.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t like those Necromancers, Summoners, or Tamers, whose abilities could allow them to have many summons, as they didn’t need to give of their strength to them.

He was terribly limited to only being able to have the summons he could spend stat points on.

Still, he looked wistfully at his Class.

Though limited, it was so amazing that it made his blood burn. And more so because...

He was just minutes away from getting his second Talent.

The Awakener.

He had been wishing for it for a long time, and now it was almost in his hand.

Behind that one, there was still a third Talent. He didn’t know when it would appear, but it would surely be amazing.

But what called him most was that 2nd Manifestation. freēnovelkiss.com

The first Manifestation was the one that allowed him to have Summonings. What would the 2nd one be like? What kind of extraordinary power would it give him?

Although he didn’t know it now, he longed for it to show itself. Unfortunately, he didn’t even have a clue as to what it was or its name.

While he was thinking and longing to get his 2nd Talent, his summonings below him were doing their thing.

In a matter of 1 hour, everything in front of him was over. Only a ruined city rested, glaring angrily at him.

No one was left alive in this depraved city.

At that moment, all the summons seemed to see him. Some of them had strange expressions of smiles and sadness. Then, they were consumed downward, disappearing with it.

He was stunned by this.

Suddenly, in front of him, there was no one.

Everything was in total solitude.

Everyone was dead.

Everyone had disappeared.

Everything... was destroyed.

This... was a bit hard to watch.

Even knowing that it was a city that deserved destruction, some old feelings wanted to emerge from inside his heart.

Perhaps the old Elliot, who was a noble-hearted man, had wanted to resurface and scold him. In fact, he was probably already doing so.

But he could ignore it.

’Destroy a city, eh?’ He showed no expression on his face.

He was as indifferent as when he heard John’s cries for help, but this time, he felt no anger.

Just... peace of mind.

He had completed his mission.

In this world, it was kill or be killed. If he hadn’t destroyed that city once he was here, then all that was left for him to do was die.

He had simply followed the path he was supposed to.

The problem with this was...

’It feels like... we’re slaves to a System that uses us to make its own profits.’ He thought.

His mind suddenly panicked, and he realized what he had thought. He didn’t understand why he had done it, but he was alarmed. He stopped looking through his summoning and looked inside himself.

Luckily, the System messages could be seen even inside the body.

There was a very clear Rule in the System that said you could not go against it, even in your thoughts. This could trigger severe punishment.

He didn’t know if that thought was going against the System.

But after waiting for punishment, it did not come. The System did not react to him and instead sent him messages about the Test.

[Test of Guts and Courage: Defeat your former self.]

[Can you destroy an entire population? Can you look ahead, once your former self rebukes you for the evil you have done?]

[A God is one who can make the right decisions at the correct times. He does not care whether he must kill, flee, or betray. He always watches over his own mentality and ego. For his Divinity. He doesn’t care if life is involved; he will look ahead and do his duty.]

[You have had the determination to look ahead when Your Past watched you and rebuked you. You have completed the Test of God.]

[God’s Trials: 1/3.]

[If you lack the guts and want to be a Hero who watches over the world and its inhabitants, you will never be God.]

Elliot looked at each message intently.

After reading, he felt stunned.

Something in the text told him that if he had hesitated at the end, he might have failed the test.

Maybe the test wasn’t killing a depraved population but rather a struggle between his current self, which wants to achieve greatness, and his past self, which wants to be a Hero.

Though it was only a maybe.

His mind had no time to think. Soon, he succumbed to the darkness, and a great change occurred. The previous chill of the night wind hitting his body turned into the chill of the air conditioner hitting him.

This somehow brought him a terrifying tiredness. As soon as he appeared in the real world, his body went backward, and a terrible pain seized him in his eyes.

The pain he had not felt before was now hitting him. He couldn’t hold on and fell straight down unconscious.

Seeing him appear, Anna ran to him and quickly held him. The blindfold on his eyes surprised her.

’A complicated mission was given to him so that he came to lose his eyes. And considering the nature of those Tests, he may have come close to losing his life.’ She thought.

She was surprised that he came back without even spending an hour outside, meaning he didn’t even last 1 week inside, but that he came back like that surprised her even more.

She laid him down on the bed and removed his blindfold.

She wanted to see how bad the eyes were.

’...There’s a lot of damage here.’ She sighed. His eyes hadn’t been destroyed, but almost. They were at a point where most of the nerves and stuff had been damaged.

’Losing your vision at your age certainly is unfortunate.’

She couldn’t help shaking her head. ’Luckily, you are my outstanding student. Otherwise, your great talent might have been buried today.’ She pulled an item from her inventory and stared at it.

’Looks like you’ll be very useful. A great investment.’ She smiled and, without hesitation, used it on Elliot.

The item was one of the healing type and could cure practically everything that potions couldn’t. It was said that it could even bring back someone half a step in death.

She could see how his eyes were restored nicely and were soon as good as new. At the same time, the item in her hand disappeared.

An expression of regret hit her.

"Too bad, it costs too much money." Then she looked at Elliot who was still unconscious and smiled at him. "No need to thank me. Next time we meet, you should simply call me Master Anna, and it will be a good investment."

Anna rolled over, wrote a note, and then left.

Elliot didn’t wake up until much later. When he did, he was no longer in pain.

And his eyes...

’Can I see?’ He felt dazed.

Not only could he see. He felt his eyes had grown amazingly stronger.

’What the hell? That pain I felt was real, I’m sure...’

While in a daze, trying to get the logic to him, he looked at the table to the side. There was a note.

As he read it, he realized what had happened.

He smiled softly. Somehow, it felt good. Healing his eyes with that level of damage couldn’t be done without a very high-level Healing Mage or an item that could fulfill that function, which cost a great deal of money and were usually life-saving treasures for powerful people.

The fact that she had decided to use the safe thing possibly reflected that he was important to her. It made Elliot feel as if she were a mother trying to protect him.

Always from behind. Doesn’t show too much. Doesn’t say a lot of things. But if you look back, you’ll realize how many times she was there to hold you up and keep you from falling.

’Someday I will repay you many times over for this, Miss Anna.’ he promised.

He put the note aside and, now that he could see again, decided to look at his system. Since the test was over, several sections of the system had lit up.

Among those, his stats.

[Stats]

| Strength: 60. (19 remaining)

| Resistance (Vitality): 60. (11 remaining).

| Agility: 59. (4 remaining).

| Sense: 50. (8 remaining).

[Total Remaining Points: 42.]

’My power would increase greatly if I decided to raise them all. I’d be very close to Alexander Clark’s Strength and so on...’

He was seriously considering moving them up, but his summons would fall behind, so he couldn’t do it.

"Sigh." He sighed visibly. He was realizing that his way would be a very long way.

So long that he couldn’t see a time when he wouldn’t worry about this. What if raising his stats or that of his summons...

He sighed again, but he didn’t care for now. He was getting used to it.

He decided to look at the most striking window of his system.

His 2nd Talent... The Awakener was there.
