Chapter 107: Chapter 107- she was unharmed

Two years ago, he hadn’t known Catherine yet, and could only let her fall victim to Lucca’s schemes. But now Catherine had him by her side, and he would never allow Lucca to succeed again.

So when Lucca tried once more tonight to have someone lay hands on Catherine, she was caught red-handed by the people he had stationed around Catherine for her protection.

And thanks to Bert’s precautionary arrangements, Catherine had not been harmed this time.

Originally, after dinner, Catherine had gone downstairs to take out the trash. That was when the incident occurred. But just as the two men approached her with ill intent, the two people Bert had assigned to her protection rushed out and subdued them. That was how the current scene came to be.

After kicking the two men to the ground, Bert walked straight over to Catherine. Lowering his gaze, he looked at her with undisguised concern. Catherine knew exactly what he was worried about, and before he could even ask, she hurried to reassure him.

"You don’t need to worry about me. I’m fine."

The bodyguards had intervened in time. Aside from being a little frightened, she hadn’t suffered any physical injury at all.

As for the shock to her nerves, it had already eased during the time after the incident.

It was also because of this incident that Catherine learned Bert had always had people stationed around her, protecting her safety at all times.

His meticulous, all-encompassing care made her truly and deeply feel his feelings for her.

This was completely different from when he had merely spoken of liking her or wanting to be with her. Words alone, no matter how sweet, rarely leave a lasting impression. But when those sweet words are transformed into action, they become profound and tender beyond measure.

If Catherine had still been hesitating, wavering, and afraid of this relationship before, then after this incident, she was truly resolute. With such a powerful man standing guard by her side, what reason did she have not to commit wholeheartedly?

He loved her—so sincerely and so tangibly. And what reason did she have not to love him in return?

In the time between the incident and Bert’s arrival, Catherine’s heart had undergone a dramatic transformation. At its core, it was because the love Bert gave her was strong and steadfast enough to shake the fear and uncertainty that had always held her back.

It was his love that made her brave, that made her fearless.

Even if there were mountains and seas between them, she was willing to overcome those obstacles bit by bit for his sake. And Catherine believed that Bert felt the same way.

In response to her thoughtful reassurance, Bert reached up to cup her cheek. His fingers slid through her soft hair, then curved around the back of her neck as he pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly—only this way could he calm the fear and panic that had gripped his heart moments before.

Bert didn’t dare imagine what state Catherine would be in if she were hurt again, if Lucca were allowed to destroy her once more. Even the strongest heart would likely be shattered completely.

Fortunately—fortunately, she was unharmed.

As Catherine was held so close in his warm, intimate embrace, her nose stung and she nearly burst into tears.

It was this kind of care and devotion that pierced straight through her heart.

No woman dislikes being cherished and protected like this, and no woman can resist such tenderness.

After reassuring Catherine, Bert released her and turned to stride toward the two men who had been subdued. There was no concrete evidence that the two had intended to harm Catherine—they had been restrained before they could do anything. He couldn’t very well allow them to hurt her just to obtain proof.

Since there was no way to bring them to justice through proper channels, the matter could only be resolved privately.

The violence in Bert’s expression was overwhelming. Even before he said a word, one of the men couldn’t help begging,

"We were just doing a job for money. Please, just let us go."

The other hurriedly echoed him,

"Yeah, yeah. If you want to settle accounts, go after Lucca."

They had voluntarily revealed Lucca as the one behind it all. The two of them were nothing more than street thugs who did this sort of thing regularly. They just hadn’t expected to be caught before they even made a move—and to fall into the hands of such a terrifying man.

Bert stood before them, his face cold, looking down at them from above as he asked in a frigid voice,

"What did Lucca tell you to do?"

One of them spoke up, stammering,

"W-we were supposed to sleep with her, and then take some photos and videos or something—"

As Bert’s expression grew colder by the second, the man’s voice shrank with it, until he didn’t dare finish the sentence.

Hearing Lucca’s filthy intentions, Catherine’s face drained of color again and again.

She still hadn’t had the chance to settle accounts with Lucca over what happened two years ago, and now Lucca was using the same despicable methods to try to harm her once more. What kind of heart did Lucca have, to be this vicious?

Bert glanced at Catherine’s pale face. The reason he had let her hear exactly what Lucca had planned to do to her was precisely this—to make her see clearly that someone like Lucca deserved only the worst possible ending, and that whatever he was about to do to Lucca, Catherine should feel no pity or sympathy for her.

For someone as vindictive as Bert, tormenting Lucca was never going to be as simple as having someone sleep with her and filming it. What he intended to destroy was not only Lucca’s body, but also her mind. He wanted her to live in a state worse than death.

After the man finished speaking, Bert stood there in silence for a moment. Then he suddenly pulled the hand he had tucked into his trouser pocket free and hurled what he was holding straight at one man’s face.

It was a lighter. Thrown with brutal force, it instantly split the man’s skin open, blood spilling as it smashed into his face. The lighter ricocheted off the marble floor and shattered, the sharp sound making Catherine instinctively step back.

Bert stepped forward again and kicked the other man viciously several times. Between being slammed and kicked, the two collapsed to the floor, howling in pain, and only then did Bert feel some of the rage in his chest subside.

After venting his anger, he clapped his hands lightly and calmly instructed the two bodyguards,

"Take them away."

And so the two men were dragged out of Catherine’s apartment. A beating was inevitable—and it wouldn’t end unless they were beaten badly enough, short of being sent to the hospital.

It wasn’t really their fault. They were just unlucky enough to have crossed Bert.

Once everyone had left, the small apartment fell quiet again. Renata emerged from her bedroom, her face pale as well. Any mother would be terrified after her daughter went through something so dangerous, especially when that daughter had already endured such a horrifying and humiliating experience in the past.

She had heard everything that happened outside just now. When she realized it was Lucca once again trying to harm Catherine, Renata was both furious and enraged.

And at the same time, she felt overwhelming relief—relief that none of those dreadful things had actually happened.
