Chapter 203: Chapter 194: He Doesn’t Trust Her

Time waits for no one, and saving lives was the priority right now.

Ye Junhan selected several Earth Ability users and strength ability users, having Wei Heng and Tuan Fugui lead an advance team to rescue people. The rest were to take inventory of their supplies and follow close behind.

The convoy bustled with tense, orderly activity. Gu Xi and Shen Yue exchanged a look, and the two walked over to a nearby hillside.

Gu Xi frowned slightly. "Those mutants that were chasing you..." ’They’ve all gone to the valley where we camped last night. They’re clearly after that thing at the bottom of the pit.’

"Gu Xi," Shen Yue suddenly cut her off. "Actually, the higher-ups have been investigating the mutants for a while now..."

But the whole affair was incredibly murky. The military had faced numerous constraints before, and even when they uncovered something, they could only shelve it for the time being.

Gu Xi gave him a strange look. ’Why doesn’t Shen Yue want me to say it out loud?’

Her gaze swept over to the convoy. The group from the Abnormal Ability Research Institute looked shaken, but many of them had shifty eyes, darting all over the place. Gu Xi thought for a moment, then asked Shen Yue, "Has anything like this happened at the base before?"

"No." Shen Yue’s eyes burned with anger as he said meaningfully, "At the base, they wouldn’t dare."

The base is densely populated, with all sorts of factions gathered there. One or two mutants appearing occasionally would be manageable, but a large-scale emergence would not only cause widespread panic but also make the other factions wary, perhaps even prompting them to join forces and attack.

Only out in the wild would they dare to deploy those mutants so brazenly and on such a large scale.

In the distance, a few people from the Institute feigned casually walking past the medical vehicle where He Yue was. One of them even snuck over to the armored vehicle holding the Pangolin mutant.

Gu Xi glanced at the Abnormal Ability Research Institute’s convoy and frowned slightly. "What do you think?"

She remembered that Ye Nan had originally applied to form her own team freely. But now, it seemed all her team members were from the Institute.

To an outsider, it looked very much like Mr. Ye, doting on his daughter, had arranged everything for her behind the scenes.

"The relationship between the Institute and the base is complicated. Ye Nan most likely..." Shen Yue followed her gaze, then suddenly took a step forward and leaned in to whisper something in her ear.

Gu Xi’s eyes widened in surprise.

Not far away, Ye Junhan frowned slightly and started walking toward the two of them.

In the medical vehicle at the rear, Fang Rui had given Ye Nan a sedative. Although she was awake, she seemed lethargic and drained.

Fang Rui poured her a cup of hot water.

Ye Nan didn’t take it. She lowered her gaze and hugged herself, a flash of struggle and pain in her eyes.

Fang Rui sighed inwardly. He was a psychologist and could tell at a glance that something was wrong with Ye Nan’s current state. It was clearly psychological trauma.

Just as he was about to start a counseling session with her, footsteps sounded outside the vehicle.

Ye Nan instinctively looked up and out of the vehicle, but she didn’t see the person she most wanted to see right now.

Liu Hao knocked on the door, leaning his upper body against the window frame, and greeted her with a smile. "Xiaonan, you’re awake. How are you feeling? You okay?"

"I’m fine," Ye Nan forced a smile. "I’m a Healing System user, I’ll be okay..."

Her gaze went past Liu Hao, scanning the surroundings. She finally spotted Ye Junhan’s back as he walked toward the hill. Ye Nan pressed her lips together but couldn’t hold back in the end. She turned to Liu Hao and asked, "Why are you guys here? Did the team take on Miss Gu’s escort mission?"

’I thought I just saw Gu Xi, and Qi Xiang and Wei Heng...’

"Yeah, Miss Gu is the prize of the entire army right now, a real treasure," Liu Hao said nonchalantly. "None of the big shots up top felt at ease, so in the end, our Mr. Ye had to make a military pledge to snag this mission..."

Ye Nan froze. She looked toward Ye Junhan in the distance. He had just reached the foot of the hill when Shen Yue and Gu Xi emerged from behind it.

"The casualties at the camp are still unknown," Ye Junhan said, looking up at Gu Xi. "We’ll probably be delayed there for a few days." ’Until the base sends people to take over and handle the survivors from the camp.’

’He also wanted to see what attitude the reinforcements would have toward He Yue and the base’s Guard Team.’

’He Yue’s Guard Team was basically crippled now, but if the people from the base insisted they continue escorting Gu Xi on her mission...’

"If you’re in a hurry, I can have Zhao Qingxiao lead a team to help you continue your mission. But I’m afraid Qi Xiang will have to come with me to the camp to help with the rescue." Ye Junhan’s gaze fell on Gu Xi’s face. ’He was taking the initiative to ask for Qi Xiang. Would she...?’

Qi Xiang, who had just walked over, heard this and immediately grabbed Gu Xi’s arm nervously. ’It’s too dangerous outside! I don’t want to be separated from Gu Xi!’

Gu Xi patted her hand and looked up at Ye Junhan. "Let’s save them first." ’Lives were at stake; the mission could wait.’

"Right, right!" Qi Xiang nodded hastily. "Let’s all go save them..."

As she said this, she suddenly paused and looked up past Ye Junhan. Ye Nan was standing not far away, supported by Fang Rui. After some hesitation, she finally walked over.

"Jun Han, Miss Gu."

Ye Nan took a deep breath. "I want to go back to the camp with you all to help with the rescue."

She paused, then bit her lip and said, "I’m a Healing System user..."

"Alright."

Ye Junhan glanced at her, then turned and walked back toward the convoy.

The convoy set off once more.

After getting in a vehicle, Gu Xi contacted Li Ming to inform him of the situation.

But Li Ming still didn’t reply.

Gu Xi frowned slightly.

At the same time, an encrypted communication request popped up on Ye Junhan’s personal terminal.

...

「Two hours later.」

The convoy arrived near the camp, only to find a field of ruins.

Qi Xiang stared at the massive crater in the distance and sucked in a sharp breath. ’Those bastards!’

"We arrived at this camp in the morning," Ye Nan said, getting out of a vehicle and walking to Ye Junhan’s side. She lowered her gaze. "At the time, we had been chased by a horde of monsters for a day and a night, and we couldn’t contact the outside world. When we suddenly saw this camp, everyone breathed a sigh of relief..."

Nearby, Qi Xiang was so angry she let out a cold laugh. ’You all breathed a sigh of relief, but what did the people here ever do to deserve this?’

Ye Nan knew she was in the wrong. She lowered her head and bit her lip, tears welling in her slightly reddened eyes.

’I didn’t want this to happen either, but the team couldn’t contact the outside world. To escape the monsters chasing us, our only choice was to rely on the camp’s defense system...’

’In truth, I had objected, but no one listened to me.’

’I couldn’t blame them, either. In that kind of situation, selfishness is the most basic human instinct...’

’Surviving the apocalypse isn’t easy. Everyone wants to live.’

’But I... I can’t save everyone.’

Ye Nan shut her eyes in anguish.

Qi Xiang shot her an inscrutable look, then pulled Gu Xi toward the temporary encampment.

This was the temporary settlement area Wei Heng and his team had set up. The conditions were crude—earthen walls and beds, without so much as a single decent plank of wood inside.

The settlement area was divided in two. The left side was piled high with corpses, while on the right lay over a hundred injured survivors.

Bloodstains covered the ground, and the air was filled with constant wails of agony.

It was tragic, utterly tragic.

Tuan Fugui was rushing about with his medical kit, so busy he was spinning in circles.

Although the Earth Ability users who had arrived first had dug some medical equipment and common medicines out of the ruins, there were simply too many injured people. He couldn’t possibly handle it all by himself.

Seeing this, Qi Xiang hurried over to help.

Gu Xi sighed. A small green sprout reluctantly vanished from her fingertip, transforming into countless points of pale green light that silently merged into the bodies of the wounded.

’Although I can’t be too obvious about it, this can at least save their lives for now.’

’As for what happens later... isn’t Ye Nan, the Healing System user, here for that?’

She took the gauze Qi Xiang handed her, her gaze unintentionally sweeping past the window.

Not far away, Ye Junhan was leading some men toward the ruins, speaking in a low voice with Wei Heng. Ye Nan instinctively started to follow them.

Ye Junhan frowned slightly. Just as he was about to tell her to go to the medical area and help with the rescue, Ye Nan spoke first. "Jun Han."

She pointed at the ruins ahead and said seriously, "There should still be people buried underneath. If I stay here, I can treat the critically injured ones immediately."

’She had a point.’

Ye Junhan gave her a deep look.

"Li Shen, Fang Rui."

"Yes, Captain." Ye Junhan hadn’t said anything else, but the two men walked straight to Ye Nan’s side.

In the past, she would have naturally seen this as him protecting her, but now... A hint of hurt showed in Ye Nan’s downcast eyes.

’He... didn’t trust her.’
