From Apocalypse Boss to Farmer: My Vegetables Make Me Stronger!-Chapter 202 - 193: The Gang’s All Here
The command vehicle fell silent for a moment as everyone exchanged glances.
’How could a convoy from the Abnormal Ability Research Institute show up in the middle of nowhere? And run right into us, of all things?’
Just then, Yang Liu transmitted the drone footage to the team-wide channel. Ye Junhan frowned slightly as he watched the battered-looking off-road vehicles appear on screen.
As if he’d thought of something, Ye Junhan pressed the intercom. "Move in for a closer look."
"Roger that." Yang Liu tried to maneuver the drone closer to the convoy, hoping to peer through the windows and see who was inside.
Meanwhile, the convoy on the ground spotted the drone in the air. Someone in one of the vehicles suddenly blared the horn.
The horn sounded in a peculiar rhythm.
It was an internal emergency contact signal for the Military Department.
’But why would someone in the Abnormal Ability Research Institute’s convoy be using an internal signal from the Military Department?’
Ye Junhan’s eyes narrowed, and he exchanged a look with Wei Heng in the same vehicle.
Just then, Yang Liu finally maneuvered the drone up to the window of the SUV that had sent the signal and got a shot of the driver’s face.
"It’s Shen Yue!" Qi Xiang stared at the person on the screen ahead, her brow furrowed in astonishment. "What’s he doing in the Institute’s convoy?"
Just two hours ago, Qi Xiang had been chatting with the Qin sisters in the Farming Team’s private group chat. They hadn’t run into anything unusual then. According to the plan, the two groups were supposed to have an "accidental" rendezvous in the wilderness tonight.
But now Shen Yue had suddenly appeared in the Institute’s convoy and was sending an emergency signal. They must have run into serious trouble.
Qi Xiang instinctively glanced at Gu Xi.
She saw Gu Xi meeting someone’s eyes in the rearview mirror.
Somehow, in that instant, a strange feeling washed over Qi Xiang.
"Li Shen, take some people and go check it out." Ye Junhan averted his gaze and pressed the intercom in his hand.
The lead pickup on the far left immediately broke away from the convoy, heading toward the ten o’clock position.
In the fleeting glimpse from the drone, Shen Yue’s expression had been exceptionally grave—a far cry from his usual laid-back demeanor. Gu Xi’s eyes narrowed slightly as she toyed with the two small, tender leaves atop the little sprout.
’The ten o’clock position... Isn’t that where that pack of mutants came from earlier?’
’And according to the after-action report, five people were still missing.’
’So, is this just a coincidence, or... a deliberate setup?’
Gu Xi looked up at Ye Junhan in the front seat. "Stop."
Ye Junhan didn’t ask why. He simply pressed the intercom. "All units, hold your positions."
The intercom crackled, followed by a chorus of "Roger that."
Just then, the drone captured new footage.
"Huh, that person in the car..." Qi Xiang pointed at the Light Screen ahead. "Isn’t that our Miss Ye?"
It was Ye Nan.
’But what is Ye Nan doing here?’
According to the mission issued by the Joint Cleanup Task Force, the sector Ye Nan’s team was assigned to wasn’t in this direction.
Qi Xiang propped her chin on her hand, her thoughtful gaze shifting between Gu Xi and Ye Junhan. ’I wonder who Miss Ye and the Abnormal Ability Research Institute behind her are after this time?’
Gu Xi saw Ye Nan, too.
’I don’t know how that girl ended up with Shen Yue’s group,’ Gu Xi thought, ’but she’s Ye Xin’s daughter. If she’s in trouble... I suppose I, as her senior, should probably lend a hand.’
Nearby, Qi Xiang quietly tugged on Wei Heng’s sleeve and gave him a meaningful look.
Wei Heng sighed internally. ’Sometimes I really have to admire this girl. Her intuition in certain matters is almost frighteningly sharp.’
Before long, the pickup that had left earlier was leading the Abnormal Ability Research Institute’s convoy toward them, guided by the drone.
Gu Xi and the others all got out of their vehicles and waited by the side.
The lead vehicle of the approaching convoy hadn’t even come to a full stop before Ye Nan frantically threw open the door. She stumbled as she ran over, her face deathly pale. "Jun Han! Monsters attacked a nearby safety camp..."
Hearing the word "monsters," Gu Xi’s eyes narrowed slightly.
"What’s the situation?" Qi Xiang walked over to the Qin sisters, who had just gotten out of their vehicle. She glanced toward Ye Nan and asked quietly, "How did you end up with her?"
Qin Yi said, still shaken, "This morning, Mr. Shen took us to a nearby safety camp to get some energy resupplies..."
But as soon as they entered the camp, they ran into the Institute’s convoy.
According to them, their convoy had been attacked by monsters on the road. In the panic, they’d taken a wrong turn and ended up at this safety camp by accident.
Shen Yue was suspicious of their story.
But just then, the ground of the entire camp suddenly began to tremble violently.
The people from the Institute panicked, scrambling into their vehicles and trying to flee the camp.
Shen Yue acted decisively, pulling her and her sister into one of the Institute’s vehicles.
After the chaotic escape, they had barely driven two kilometers from the camp when a tremendous BOOM erupted behind them.
"I glanced back..." Qin Yi said, her expression full of terror. "The entire camp collapsed in an instant. It vanished in the blink of an eye..."
Because there were still many civilians in the camp who hadn’t escaped, Shen Yue immediately demanded the convoy turn back to help, but the Institute members were reluctant. In the end, it was Ye Nan who stepped in, and they finally, grudgingly, stopped the vehicles.
Just as everyone was about to get out and help, a huge swarm of monsters burst out from underground...
At this point in her own explanation, Ye Nan collapsed from exhaustion.
Ye Junhan had Tuan Fugui help her to the side. He walked over to Shen Yue and asked, "How far from here was the last place you saw the monsters? And how many were there?"
"About twenty-five kilometers," Shen Yue said, his expression grim. "They’re mutants, but not like the ones we’ve seen before. It didn’t seem like they were just following their bloodthirsty instincts when they were chasing us."
Shen Yue narrowed his eyes and thought for a moment. "After they attacked the camp, they kept chasing our convoy. I’d estimate there are over two hundred of them..."
More than two hundred?!
The color drained from the faces of everyone nearby.
Gu Xi’s fingers, which had been toying with the little green sprout, paused for a fraction of a second. She imperceptibly exchanged a glance with Shen Yue.
’More than two hundred monsters would be enough to wipe out their entire convoy.’
’But from the looks of things, while the convoy was battered, it hadn’t suffered any actual harm.’
’In that case... it seemed less like the mutants were chasing them and more like... they were herding them toward a specific location.’
Gu Xi looked up at Ye Junhan.
Ye Junhan’s expression darkened. He asked again, "The buried camp, how far is it from here? And how many people were still inside when it happened?"
"Over eighty kilometers. As for how many people were in the camp..." Shen Yue slowly shook his head. "We had just entered when we ran into the Institute’s convoy. Everything happened right after that..."
"Afterward, I tried to report it and call for help, but I found the signal in the area was blocked," Shen Yue added pointedly.
’The signal being jammed could have been the mutants’ doing, or... there could be a mole within the convoy.’
Ye Junhan’s eyes narrowed. He turned to find one of the people from the Abnormal Ability Research Institute and asked directly, "What exactly happened? How many people were buried in that camp?"
The man was about to shake his head and claim ignorance when he saw Ye Junhan’s cold, dark eyes fix on him, exuding an invisible, forceful pressure. "Answer my question."
"M-Mr. Ye." Under the terrifying mental pressure, the man had no choice but to say evasively, "We were forced by those monsters... We had no other choice but to enter the camp..."
Hearing this, Ye Junhan’s expression turned several shades colder.
’A safety camp can have anywhere from several hundred to over ten thousand people... These people... how could they?’
’How could they!’
