Chapter 240: 240. Same Mistakes (by Echo Friendly)

"Finished?" I asked her, not waiting for her to answer as I stood up and walked out of the room.

Now, I really wanted a smoke.

I waited for Henry, leaning against the wall beside the door where his session took place.

It seemed that my psychologist always finished a bit earlier than his. Well, figured, as the boss’s daughter.

Though this place should have been built by the government, so there shouldn’t be only one boss. If, however, it was not the government but a private person that stood behind this, well...

Who knows? Not my problem.

I wanted a smoke, and I wanted a hug, again feeling like shit, the self-hatred taking over.

What else could help—and worsen the situation at the same time—than to look at one of my victims and my biggest believer at the same time?

Like a beautiful knife I could ram into my guts to feel again, leaving behind a bittersweet aftertaste.

I saw one of the twins coming out of the room across from me.

She nodded at me and smiled shyly, looking around before coming to my side.

"Where is Henry?" she asked me.

I motioned with my head toward the closed door beside me.

"Do you know a place where I can smoke?"

"Yes." She nodded.

"Should I show you?"

"Nah, I’ll wait for him."

"Okay." She was taller than me and very politely slid down a bit while leaning beside me against the wall so that our heights matched.

"How are you?" I eventually asked.

"Good, better. Everything is good as long as my sister is with me."

"Yeah." I nodded, staring at the floor. I know that feeling.

"If you...if you ever need my help or that of my sister...we can help..."

I turned my head to look at her.

"We could...we are very fast..." She fell silent, and that told me there was more that she could do.

I had seen how fast they could run, but that was apparently not all. I brought my finger to my lips, motioning for her to stop talking, and she nodded.

"Don’t go into that floating chamber, you and your sister. Come up with something. And if they ask you to try a drug called DMT, say no. Under no circumstances can you take it."

"Okay." She nodded rapidly. "Thank you."

"Tell Chelsea, Harry, and the guy he runs around with as well, and whoever you want."

Well, it would look strange if the whole group suddenly boycotted ’treatment’ in the wet coffins, but that’s not my problem.

"I will!" Another door opened, and her sister exited.

The twin beside me told me the direction to the place where I could smoke before she nodded at me and ran to her other half while I still waited for mine.

Finally, Henry came out; the psychologist he left inside the room was not only sweaty again, but he even had a slight red mark on his forehead.

"Pfft. Did you beat him?"

Henry laughed and put his arm around my neck.

"Would he be this unharmed if I beat him?"

"Yeah, yeah, you are the best." I steered him straight ahead, then left, and in the next corridor to the right, I saw a glass door that was a secured fire exit. Someone had placed a big stone there so the door wouldn’t close. Very nice.

"So did you throw something at the poor guy?"

Henry let me lead him wherever, not even asking questions.

"He gave me a contract regarding participation in a test. I just gave it back to him, and he decided to catch it with his forehead." He shrugged innocently.

"Bahaha."

"Wait, did he tell you what they would test?"

"No, just that it was an experiment. Don’t tell me you agreed, because then I’ll go back and sign." He stopped in his tracks, making me stop as well.

"Haah, what the fuck? No, they’ll test the DMT drug and are searching for participants. I said no." I pulled him toward the door, opening it and finding myself in a secluded corner—a little garden that led to the massive one in the middle of the donut-shaped building.

It was really an exclusive smoking area, if one went by the half-full soda bottle with the discarded cigarette butts in it.

I looked for cameras before conjuring up a smoke, and after taking a drag, I conjured up another one because Henry snatched mine away from me.

"Unbelievable." He growled.

"They don’t waste any time." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

"I would have agreed if Silver-Henry hadn’t warned me."

"...You really would have?"

"Able to close portals? Be my guest. Easier than clearing them if it ever comes to that." I nodded.

"But... it’s dangerous?"

"Yeah, but the gains are way higher than the risk. At least that would have been my train of thought."

Henry clenched his jaw, nodding curtly.

"Even if that were the case, let me tell you from someone with experience: drugs are never the answer—to anything, especially not given by the government in an ’experiment.’"

"Right back at you; if something happens to me, don’t turn back to old habits."

Henry’s free hand shot to my mouth, his whole demeanor darkening as he squished my cheeks.

"Don’t even joke about it. Nothing will happen; we’ll stay together."

Ah, here it was; that was what I needed. Too proud or insecure to ask for a hug, what was I doing here, trying to tickle a reaction from him, testing and probing for his affection while I already knew I had it?

I pressed my eyes shut, and he let go.

"Did I hurt you?" His voice softened, and he let the cigarette fall, cupping my face and stroking my cheeks.

"Give me a hug." I said weakly, and after he paused for half a second, he bent down to hug me properly while I propped my arms on his shoulders, carefully holding the cigarette away so as not to burn him.

"Did something happen?" He snuggled his cheek against mine, rubbing it adorably.

"No."

"Did something happen?" He repeated, sounding as if he were pleading with me.

What are you doing, you dumb dog? Imma going to tell you at this rate.

"Just shitty thoughts."

"You don’t want to tell?"

"No."

"Okay. Tell me when you are ready."

"Mhm."

Henry squeezed me, and I did the same.

This helped even more than I had thought.
