Chapter 74: Chapter 71: Petting the Fox’s Tail

Even after eating until they were stuffed, they hadn’t finished the ten large baskets of seafood. Almost half a basket was still left.

It was time for Ling Hong to go to the Witch Doctor Stone Castle to have his dressing changed, so An Jin went with him, deciding to bring the leftover seafood for Chi Li to try.

Mi Yin was ordered to stay home.

Snake Beastmen are naturally lazy. After his meal, he had transformed into a large snake and coiled up in a dark corner. Nestled in a pile of animal hides and hay, he closed the pale red membranes over his eyes and became completely still.

Things like crabs and lobsters are more shell than meat, fish have too many bones, and if not prepared properly, oysters and clams have an overpowering fishy taste. For these reasons, even though seafood was abundant around Beast Gathering City, very few Beastmen ever ate it.

When Chi Li saw An Jin give him a stone bowl full of seafood, he looked slightly surprised. "Is your tribe short on food?"

Only during a famine, when they were starving, would Beastmen resort to eating such things. They were mostly shell with little meat and had a strong fishy smell.

"It’s really delicious, you should try it. We gathered too much and couldn’t finish it all, so I brought some for you."

An Jin peeled a few shrimp for him and picked out a large crab full of rich roe, handing them over together. "You can’t eat spicy food, so the shrimp are plain. The crab might be a little spicy, but you should be able to handle it."

Chi Li felt a flicker of emotion. He took the plump, pink shrimp and bit into it with a hint of hesitation.

The unique savory, sweet, and tender flavor of the seafood filled his mouth.

His fox-like eyes widened slightly, a flash of amazement in them. He carefully savored the deliciousness on his tongue, then looked at An Jin, his eyes crinkling into a smile. "This is actually really good. It’s delicious, far beyond what I imagined."

’This female was always full of surprises.’

Ling Hong’s wound was almost completely healed. Chi Li unwrapped the animal-hide bandage for him, telling him he wouldn’t have to come back for any more treatment.

"I remember you having a scar where this wound was." Holding the used bandage, Chi Li looked in surprise at An Jin’s shoulder blade. "That was a wound that went straight through."

"Oh, that scar."

An Jin touched her shoulder. The skin was smooth and fair. She raised an eyebrow and smiled at the young man. "The old Witch Doctor taught me how to make a special ointment that can remove scars. I used it, and now it’s gone!"

The scar had been quite large, and An Jin hadn’t liked the look of it, so she had bought a scar removal cream from the System Mall.

She noticed Chi Li had suddenly frozen in place, his gaze fixed on where her wound used to be. His voice was a little strained as he asked, "Could I borrow it?"

"The scar removal cream?"

Chi Li nodded, looking somewhat lost in thought. His voice was very soft. "Yes. I can pay you with Beast Crystals."

"Alright." An Jin found it a bit strange, but she couldn’t be bothered to ask why.

As it happened, she had half a bottle left, so she had Ling Hong make a trip to fetch it and gave the scar removal cream to Chi Li.

Chi Li clutched the small stone bottle, his eyes awash with joy, yet paradoxically mixed with a hint of sorrow. Behind him, his big, fluffy red tail, soft as a cushion, swayed back and forth in front of her.

’This was the first time An Jin had ever seen him seem truly happy.’

Chi Li smiled often, a mischievous, Fox Demon-like smirk. But those smiles were always laced with arrogance and disdain, never sincere and pure like this one, as if he had finally let down all his defenses.

The tip of his fiery red fox tail was a touch of white, as pure and flawless as fresh snow.

Chi Li kept wagging his tail as he paced in front of her. An Jin couldn’t resist reaching out to touch it. The moment she did, she felt him tense up as if he’d been shocked.

She looked up and met Chi Li’s complex, deep gaze.

"Feel good?"

An Jin gave it another stroke and offered her honest assessment. "It’s so soft. Even softer than Ling Hong’s tail, I think." ’Like a super-soft stuffed animal.’

Chi Li was speechless.

So was Ling Hong.

The fiery red fox tail was snatched from her palm.

An unnatural crimson blush spread across Chi Li’s face. He shot An Jin an annoyed, cold glance, looking like he wanted to say something but stopping himself. In the end, he just turned his head away awkwardly and said faintly, "Your tribe is leaving tomorrow, right?"
