Chapter 49: Chapter 50: Masked Female

There was only one flat dirt road leading to Beast Gathering City. To ensure the safe transport of their goods, most tribes chose this route.

On the very first day, they encountered several unfamiliar tribes.

The Beastmen from both sides mostly kept their heads down, pulling their cargo without a word. They did their best to treat each other as if they were invisible, hoping to avoid unnecessary trouble and prevent covetous eyes from landing on their tribe’s goods.

However, because the Luoten Tribe was using large pushcarts—the likes of which the other Beastmen had never seen—they attracted glances and whispers from many tribes, despite their attempts to keep a low profile.

Ling Hong’s gaze turned icy, and a glacial glare swept over them.

The group of Beastmen immediately lowered their heads and guiltily quickened their pace, moving farther ahead.

An Jin was sitting on the very cart he was pulling. When it stopped abruptly, she stumbled and nearly pitched forward.

She hurriedly grabbed the cart to steady herself.

Sensing Ling Hong’s foul mood, An Jin quickly asked, "What’s wrong?"

"It’s nothing."

Ling Hong shook his head slightly, his expression unchanged as he resumed pulling the cart forward. "Sit tight. Don’t fall off."

The journey continued peacefully.

But when they were halfway through their journey, disaster struck.

Under the cover of darkness, a pack of beasts surrounded them and their hide-covered goods.

There were beasts of the air and land, about twenty in total—they were Beastmen from other tribes.

Their objective couldn’t have been simpler.

—To rob them of their goods.

The halfway point of the journey was always a difficult hurdle.

By this time, most tribes had run out of their dry rations, so powerful, food-scarce tribes would start looting, seizing food from surrounding tribes in a vicious display.

They had a Fifth Rank Beastman like Ling Hong standing guard, yet they were still targeted. It was hard to say whether they were just unlucky, or if the Beastmen facing them were simply reckless and arrogant.

Ling Hong chose a few Wolf Beasts and launched a direct attack.

If they didn’t teach these people a lesson, the surrounding tribes would assume the Luoten Tribe was weak. Worse, other opportunistic tribes might band together to bully and rob them!

"Watch An Jin and the goods! Wait here, we’ll be right back!"

Leaving these words behind, the pack of wolves shot off, their bodies as swift as lightning. Like phantoms in the night, they pursued the Beastmen who were fleeing in disarray.

"Ling Hong, no! Come back! Something’s not right!"

An Jin tried to call them back.

But it was too late.

The Wolf Beasts had already vanished. In their eyes, this challenge to their tribe’s bottom line had to be met with a harsh lesson.

A chill ran down An Jin’s spine. She had a nagging feeling that something was wrong. The Beastmen who came to plunder weren’t high-ranked; they fled the moment they were pursued. It was as if... as if they had been deliberately organized to lure Ling Hong away! 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Her mind raced, and a cold sweat broke out on her forehead.

’This is bad,’ she thought. ’It seems we’ve fallen into a trap!’

"We need to move somewhere else, now! I have a bad feeling. I think we’ve been tricked!"

An Jin cried out anxiously, but the other Beastmen didn’t take her seriously. They were still grinning. "Don’t be scared, it’s nothing. Lord Ling Hong will be back soon. He told us to wait right here, so we can’t go running off!"

An Jin was burning with anxiety, a cold dread washing over her. Before she could try to persuade them further, a massive shadow suddenly fell over them from the sky.

Several giant eagles soared above, beating their great wings.

The strongest among them had a wingspan of three to four meters. It circled in the air before diving down, its speed incredible, its momentum unstoppable.

The Beastmen were shocked and quickly transformed into their beast forms to fight back.

But the giant eagle had no intention of fighting. As if by design, its sharp black talons shot straight for the three rectangular wooden boxes An Jin was clutching, its sharp claws piercing the topmost box.

An Jin clutched them tightly, refusing to let go.

The giant eagle let out a cry. After a greedy glance at the female’s fair, beautiful face, its other massive talon seized her directly, its sharp claws puncturing her delicate skin.

"Ah!"

Excruciating pain spread from her shoulder blade. A misty layer of tears welled up in An Jin’s eyes, and she bit her pale lip so hard it bled.

Deep within the forest, the body of a giant crimson python coiled and tensed. He hadn’t wanted to reveal himself in front of the female.

But that scream of pain, which seemed to pierce the very depths of his soul, compelled his body to lunge forward on pure instinct...

The giant eagle’s talons had pierced the female’s shoulder blade. Just as it spread its wings to fly, a black shadow whipped past, and its wing snapped, spraying a mist of blood.

"SCREEE—"

The sharp, deafening cry echoed as its talons clenched. A shower of feathers rained down from the sky.

Enraged and humiliated, the giant eagle dropped the female from mid-air. With its last ounce of strength, it wobbled toward the flock of eagles in the sky.

Plunging in a weightless freefall, An Jin didn’t even have time to scream. In the instant between life and death, she fell into a cold, unfamiliar embrace.

Mi Yin held the terrified female in his arms a little tighter, his bloodthirsty, pinprick pupils narrowing on the giant eagle, whose life now hung by a thread.

But it wasn’t over.

Mi Yin saw another giant eagle rendezvous with it. A masked female was riding on the back of the newcomer, and she was the one who took the wooden box...
