Chapter 114: Chapter 114: My Heart Says It Loves You

Chloe Blackwood’s question was a loaded one.

It was as lethal as asking whom you’d save first if your mother and I fell into the water together.

Logically speaking, Chloe is his daughter, a child with a heart condition. Even if she’s wrong, adults would tend to side with her.

But that would be unfair to Claire Shaw, who was clearly the one being insulted.

Yet, in this world, nothing is perfect, and absolute fairness doesn’t exist.

Claire Shaw didn’t want Ethan Blackwood to be in a difficult position, so she took the initiative to say, "It’s getting late. You stay with the kids for a while. I’m leaving."

The man’s large hand grasped her wrist, and Claire Shaw looked at him in confusion.

Ethan Blackwood pulled her into his arms, his gaze fixed seriously on Chloe Blackwood: "Chloe, I think you should apologize to Ms. Shaw. She is your elder and will be your mother in the future. A good child shouldn’t speak to their mother in such a manner, right?"

Claire Shaw’s pupils dilated.

She hadn’t expected Ethan Blackwood to stand by her side without even asking about the incident and to treat the matter with such seriousness, rather than dismiss it as a child’s joke.

Chloe Blackwood’s expression changed dramatically. It was one thing for her to say it, but hearing confirmation from Ethan seemed to ignite her anger, and she screamed like a little beast.

"What did you say? You’re going to marry this woman?"

Seeing her agitation, Claire Shaw was a bit worried, "Okay, let’s stop talking about this, her heart..."

The man, who usually respected her, interrupted Claire Shaw directly, his handsome features frozen with coldness, his lips devoid of any smile.

He stared coldly at Chloe Blackwood’s face and said, "First of all, I’m an adult man. I can’t remain single forever. I have the right to find a partner, and Ms. Shaw is the one I like. We are in a relationship with the intention of marriage, and I hope you can prepare yourselves mentally to accept her."

This was the first time Claire Shaw had heard the word ’like’ from Ethan Blackwood’s mouth. It wasn’t any poetic vow, spoken so ordinarily yet enough to make her heart race.

Maybe it wasn’t his confession itself, but his respect for her moved her.

Her fingers tightly clasped Ethan Blackwood’s broad palm, knowing she was insecure, yet this man meticulously cared for all her emotions.

Chloe Blackwood jumped off the bed and ran barefoot towards Ethan.

She wanted to push Claire Shaw away so Ethan could hold her.

But Ethan held onto Claire Shaw’s waist firmly without budging.

He stood tall, his gaze downward, looking at the little girl clinging to his leg.

"Chloe, I know how much you rely on Dad. Dad is busy every day and frequently on business trips. Can you try to get along with Ms. Shaw?"

"No, I don’t want her. I just want Dad..."

Tears brimmed at the corner of the little girl’s eyes. Ethan wiped them away, his voice tender but firm, "So, what’s your decision?"

"If I have to choose between this woman and me, who would you choose?"

Claire Shaw’s heart skipped a beat. She knew she shouldn’t take it personally with a child, but wasn’t Chloe’s hostility towards her a bit much?

"Chloe, in the adult world, there are no choices. I want both you and Ms. Shaw. However, if you make it unpleasant for Ms. Shaw, I think I would choose her without hesitation."

Upon hearing these words, Claire Shaw thought she must be imagining things.

Was Ethan Blackwood crazy?

They had only been together for three months, mostly conversing at night, yet he said such a thing to his heart-sick daughter.

This was too unreal! Too fantastical!

Chloe Blackwood was also stunned, she looked at Ethan in disbelief, "Dad, what are you saying... In your heart, does this woman matter more than Mason and me?"

"Yes, she does." Ethan’s unwavering answer was the most hurtful.

Claire Shaw tugged at his coat, trying to stop Ethan.

But he added, "It’s not just you two; no one in this world can replace Ms. Shaw’s place in my heart. Do you understand now?"

He bent down to look into Chloe’s eyes: "If you can get along with Ms. Shaw, we’re still a family. If you make her feel wronged, then you’ll have to return to where you came from, alright?"

This was both a warning and a threat!

Return to where? Where was that?

Claire Shaw then realized that the father-daughter relationship was peculiar. Ethan Blackwood’s tenderness seemed exclusively for her.

Even his daughter wasn’t granted any access.

Regarding the children’s birth mother, it seems I should get clear answers! It wasn’t what I had thought.

Chloe Blackwood’s tears fell uncontrollably, and Mason Blackwood grew anxious.

"Mr. Blackwood, my sister is just a bit emotional. Don’t send us away. I like Ms. Shaw. We will certainly get along well, I..."

Mason’s little lips quivered, and he couldn’t hold back his cries, "Don’t abandon us..."

The little boy who didn’t cry after fighting at school was utterly distraught now.

Claire Shaw bent down to pick him up, "Don’t cry. Dad is just scaring you. He loves you so much. How could he send you away?"

"Ms. Shaw, waa..."

From a young age, Mason had been taught by Ethan that men shouldn’t cry, only bleed. It’s not that he couldn’t cry, he just had better restraint.

Even when he cried, he wouldn’t receive consolation from Ethan, but it would be seen as a sign of weakness.

In Claire Shaw’s sweet-smelling embrace, which felt like a mother’s embrace in his dreams, he couldn’t hold back any longer and finally cried out loud like a child of his age, releasing emotions accumulated over the years.

Ethan Blackwood had no time to deal with him. He still stared at Chloe, "Have you made up your mind? Stay, or should I send you away?"

Chloe’s eyes were red from crying, yet she received no trace of pity from the man.

After a moment of silence, she lowered her head to apologize to Claire Shaw: "I’m sorry, Ms. Shaw."

Claire Shaw held Mason while patting Chloe’s head, "It’s alright, don’t cry."

But she knew deep down that Chloe was different from Mason, that the little girl’s thoughts ran very deep.

Her apology didn’t come from recognizing her mistake but was the optimal choice under Ethan’s pressure.

This little girl was not one to be underestimated!

The best course of action was to stay away from Chloe as much as possible and avoid contact in the future.

Claire Shaw consoled Mason for a long time before suggesting she leave.

She expected Ethan to stay with the kids, but he expressed directly, "I’ll send you home."

Mason was visibly excited, while although Chloe didn’t speak, her eyes darkened a bit more.

She didn’t show it further, even bidding farewell politely to Claire Shaw, "Goodbye, Ms. Shaw."

In the car, Claire’s emotions were turbulent. She climbed onto Ethan Blackwood’s lap voluntarily, wrapping her arms around his neck.

"Actually, even if you chose her, I wouldn’t mind. She’s just a child, after all. I wouldn’t be mad at a child. Besides, I’ve heard worse things as a kid, I’m immune to it. If she got a heart attack from agitation, I’d be at fault."

"But I mind. Even if it’s a child, you shouldn’t be wronged."

He placed Claire’s hand against his heart, "Before, you didn’t have me, but now you do."

"Luna, here you’re the only one. No one can hurt you with any excuse."

Claire suddenly nestled into his embrace, burying her head in his neck, "Ethan, you’re so good, how can I bear to leave..."

Ethan threaded his fingers through hers, their silver rings intertwined.

Claire only then noticed the subtle pattern of a heart on it.

"Then never leave, Luna, did you hear? My heart is saying it loves you..."

Claire interlaced her fingers with his, meeting his deep affectionate gaze, "Ethan, I want you so much, so dearly."
