Chapter 560: “This One Surrenders!” The Monster Playbook of Journey to the West! Evil Demons Must Be Slain! Spoils of War!

“I am willing to serve the Great Qian Dynasty, to guard this region and ensure peace for its people,” said the Tiger-Jiao, Wang Qi.

He intended to accept amnesty[1]. During the Great Xia Dynasty period, many mountain gods took this path: after death, virtuous land and city deities would condense from the people’s incense offerings, while local mountain and water spirits were often officially recognized and enhanced.

This Tiger-Jiao was a third realm Yang Spirit expert, making his value far greater than that of ordinary beings.

Yet no one on the scene responded immediately.

Wang Qi hurriedly added, “Doesn’t Buddhism say ‘put down the butcher knife and become a Buddha[2]’? I am willing to serve the Kingdom of Qian and atone for my past sins.”

He knew that the Buddhist and Daoist masters present had Heaven’s Eyes and could perceive the lingering resentful energy and blood aura surrounding him.

He had eaten humans in the past, but the Tiger-Jiao was confident in this: a third realm Yang Spirit expert’s power was far too valuable; no faction would easily abandon him.

Vice Minister Xu of the Court of Judicial Review, the official overseeing this operation, hesitated over what to do with this Tiger-Jiao. By law, demons that eat humans or harm people with evil arts should be executed without mercy, yet one who sincerely surrenders and pledges to serve as a tool for the court was indeed tempting.

Just like in Journey to the West, many demons and demons that ate humans or caused havoc were ultimately subdued by celestial beings who descended to stage a performance, only to take them away afterward.

The Black Bear Spirit[3] had no backing, yet was also a famous and powerful demon, and in the end, it too was accepted as a protector.

“I won’t have mercy on evil demons and heretics!” Li Yanchu’s voice thundered.

The saber light stretched like a gleaming river, slicing straight forward without a moment’s hesitation!

The red-haired, blue-faced giant froze, surprised at the young Daoist’s ruthless killing intent and instant action. Immediately, he swung his Fangtian Halberd to block the saber light.

Clang!

The sound echoed like a great bell through heaven and earth, sparks flying everywhere. At this time, a sharp pain shot through Wang Qi’s arms. He involuntarily looked up at the young Daoist; he was a Tiger-Jiao, cultivated for hundreds of years, and the demon race was known for its incredible strength and musculature. Yet, he realized this young Daoist’s power surpassed even his own.

“Fellow Daoist, put down the butcher knife and become a Buddha! Give me one more chance, and I will do good deeds to atone for my sins!” Wang Qi shouted as he continued to wield the halberd against the saber light.

“That doesn’t make any sense to me!” Li Yanchu’s cold voice cut through the air.

Behind him, two towering figures appeared, mirroring his movements. Their hands rose, and the next moment, the saber fell.

With that, the Fangtian Halberd snapped in two. Wang Qi’s eyes narrowed, and he transformed into a streak of light to flee.

But in the next moment, Li Yanchu used his Godspeed to appear before him.

“Put down the butcher knife and become a Buddha?”

Dream on!

The next moment, Eight Trigrams Mirror flew out, and a white divine light struck Wang Qi. The Eight Trigrams Mirror specialized in attacking the primordial spirit.

Wang Qi’s face turned pale as he uncontrollably shook.

Meanwhile, Li Yanchu’s qi and blood surged like mountains. With a single saber strike, the blade gleamed like a river of light, and his crimson aura enveloped the entire battlefield.

Boom! Boom!

Wang Qi’s body now bore multiple wounds. No matter how he tried to channel his power, they could not be healed. He realized that if he were to maintain human form in magical combat, he would be no match for Li Yanchu.

“You push too far!” Wang Qi roared.

A hundred-meter-long Tiger-Jiao instantly appeared in the heavens, its aura terrifying.

“Want to challenge me in magical combat?!” Li Yanchu’s smile was icy. “With golden whip I scour the world, in golden armor I reveal divine might!”

With that, he invoked the Spirit Officer Summoning Talisman. In an instant, his aura surged; the heavy power of the Divine Dao descended from the luminous void.

At this moment, Li Yanchu was stronger than ever, even surprising himself. This borrowed divine power felt unusually potent.

He didn’t dwell on why, but transformed into a giant as tall as a mountain. He then commanded the Heaven and Earth!

Seeing this, Celestial Master Zhao’s eyes widened; this was the secret technique to guard Mount Longhu.

“He even cultivated the Heaven-Earth Titan Form?!” Celestial Master Zhao gasped in shock.

“Demons that bring chaos to the world must be exterminated!” A voice rolled like thunder across the sky.

With that, Li Yanchu’s hand rose, and the saber fell. The dazzling blade forced everyone to instinctively close their eyes.

In this moment, he fused the Martial Dao Manifestation, the Drawn‑Blade Art, Deity Summoning Art, Divine Dao power, warrior’s qi and blood, and that unstoppable, overwhelming momentum. With that, all of his murderous intent concentrated in this single strike.

Boom!

Seeing this, Wang Qi’s eyes widened as an immense force restrained him. He could only watch the saber strike his body. In an instant, all vitality was severed, and he was cut in half. The strike annihilated every living force within him, scattering his soul and spirit.

Soon, a deathly quiet fell across the battlefield. No one had expected a fierce and mighty Tiger-Jiao to be so brutally and directly slain by Li Yanchu’s knife.

At that moment, a rich medicinal fragrance wafted from the alchemy furnace. Colorful clouds of alchemical mist rose into the sky, and dazzling light burst forth from within the furnace, so bright that it was hard to keep one’s eyes open.

Even Celestial Master Zhao of Mount Longhu, an expert in alchemy, was deeply stirred by the level of these miraculous pills.

The bodies of demons could be refined into elixirs that massively enhanced qi and blood, strengthening the body. Shu Earth demon insects could be refined into Shu Earth Pills. But with so many flying insects, each a rare specimen accumulated by Immortal Jin Yu over hundreds of years, no one could predict what the furnace would ultimately produce when they were all combined.

Li Yanchu smiled faintly and waved his hand, storing the alchemy furnace into his Universe Bag.

At this, the onlookers even felt an indescribable sense of awe and fear.

This young man’s decisiveness in killing and combat is rarely seen in the world. He’s practically a born calamity, an incarnate star of slaughter! Celestial Master Zhao thought to himself.

As for Li Yanchu forcefully suppressing the Tiger-Jiao, Wang Qi, just as the latter was preparing to surrender, everyone tacitly chose not to bring it up.

A Tiger-Jiao at the third realm, setting aside whether its surrender was sincere or not, even if it truly served the imperial court with genuine loyalty, it still couldn’t compare to Li Yanchu, that god of slaughter.

What followed was straightforward. The four Yang Spirit experts and Li Yanchu located the collection left behind by Immortal Jin Yu.

The restrictions placed upon it were indeed formidable, but to any one of them, breaking through was no great difficulty.

“Daoist Master Li’s contribution on this journey cannot be overstated,” Master Wuse said in a deep voice. “I believe that Daoist Li should take the lion’s share of these cultivation resources.”

No one objected; it seemed only natural.

Li Yanchu’s priority now was breaking through the third realm, and he accepted this without hesitation.

Not only did he claim Immortal Jin Yu’s collection, but also the Blood Soul Pearl of Daoist Spiritual Master Jiugong. After all, the Blood Soul Pearl’s power was immense; if Li Yanchu hadn’t intercepted it, the consequences could have been catastrophic.

The Fangtian Halberd in Tiger-Jiao Wang Qi’s hands was claimed by Xu Tiannan. Though the halberd could not stop Li Yanchu’s Jiaoslayer, it was still a divine weapon.

“I only want this weapon; the rest, you all can divide as you like,” Xu Tiannan said.

The Court of Judicial Review had a swordsman skilled in killing techniques, who was half-human and half-demon. Once this weapon was taken back and refurbished, it’d be the perfect weapon for him.

1. 招安: to accept an imperial amnesty and be officially recruited (i.e., for rebels or outlaws to surrender in exchange for legitimization and government posts). ☜

2. “Lay down the butcher’s knife and become a Buddha” is a proverb meant to urge people to repent and turn toward goodness. It uses metaphor to suggest that even someone who has committed evil can, through sincere remorse, immediately reform and become a good person. Its original intent is to emphasize the importance of a change of mind: letting go of the evil thoughts, attachments, and delusions in one’s heart is equivalent to laying down the very tools that cause harm, and from that moment onward one steps onto the path of awakening.

Although this saying does not originate from the Buddhist scriptures but from later fiction, it accords with Buddhism’s aim of exhorting people to do good and its belief in the fundamental goodness of human nature. ☜

3. Heifeng Guai (Chinese: 黑风怪), also translated as the Black Wind Demon, is a character from the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West. He is a demon based in a cave on Black Wind Mountain (黑风山). His true form is a black bear, thus the demon is also known as the Black Bear Monster (Chinese: 黑熊精), but he appears as a dark-complexioned man armed with a Black Tassel Spear.

He steals Tang Sanzang's cassock during a fire. Sun Wukong goes to confront him later to take back the cassock but fails so he seeks help from Guanyin. The Black Wind Demon eventually surrenders to Guanyin after she uses one of the artifacts that the Buddha gave her (similar to the ring on Sun Wukong's head), and becomes the mountain's guardian deity.
