Chapter 108: Banter With The Hunter

More than an hour had passed since Han Xuhan had come out of the second platform. The leaderboard hadn’t changed much in the meantime. Almost everyone inside the third challenge had passed, evidently.

Was it that easy to pass that stage? Han Xuhan couldn’t help but wonder. Amongst the twenty cultivators inside, eighteen had already received their judgments, managing to get their hands on different types of legacies of the Holy Land.

The two who hadn’t, however, were both Han Xuhan’s companions. Mu Ran and Xuanyuan Zhou’s slots were still displaying the pending status.

Just as Han Xuhan was adding the finishing touches to his new defense plan, a burst of pale violet radiance appeared on the platforms, nearly blinding him.

After blinking off the blurry vision, he discovered the lone figure of Qian Yun jumping down from the platform of Sentient Contracts. Han Xuhan breathed a sigh of relief. At least it wasn’t any of the ’allies’ they had forcibly recruited on their way here.

"Brother Yun, how did it go?" He asked with a smile. Qian Yun stared at him silently for a few seconds before nodding slowly.

"It went well. I got access to the path of Sentient Contracts."

Han Xuhan narrowed his eyes behind his mask, but didn’t ask further questions. If things were that simple, he had no reason to worry.

But his experience inside the platforms was not exactly pointing to a conclusion so straightforward...

"Why are you standing out there, Brother Xuhan? Did you not participate in the challenge?" Qian Yun asked in a confused, somewhat accusatory tone.

Han Xuhan laughed nervously.

"Brother Yun, I’m not particularly interested in these law techniques. Don’t you remember that our foundation tower was infiltrated through such practice back in the first stage?

"Since then, I have lost all of my goodwill and interest toward this Holy Land and of laws and its Mystic Art. I don’t want to be a part of such a vicious organization."

"Brother Xuhan, you’re not thinking things through clearly. You’re already a part of our holy land. There is no risk in attending the tests, that I can guarantee. Just go in and choose whichever technique you want."

Trying his best to persuade Han Xuhan, Qian Yun turned to look at the leaderboard in the air above him.

Han Xuhan’s avatar and stats were very eye-catching among the ranks, written in flashing red letters on the last position.

Han Xuhan winced. He hadn’t thought about that pitfall in the heat of the moment.

"...Brother Xuhan, it says here that you have already participated in TWO tests and failed in both! Why did you lie just now?" Qian Yun’s accusatory tone got deeper.

Han Xuhan sighed and shrugged his shoulders in an unhappy manner.

"Brother Yun, do you have to go that far to pour salt over my wounded heart? How can you not understand something so simple? Stop embarrassing me!"

He reverted back to the whiny persona he had painstakingly cultivated throughout the inheritance test. What he wanted to express indirectly was very simple.

I feel too embarrassed to admit that I have failed twice when my all of peers passed. Please don’t bully me, uwu~

Qian Yun silently digested the response.

Well, there was one way he could be sure of whether Han Xuhan was a threat or not to his plans.

Closing his eyes, Qian Yun focused on the voice in his heart that had guided him through the chaotic state of his mind during the third test.

If everything was going according to his plan, a mental connection should be present among all those who have absorbed the special parts of his soul shards, stored inside the automatons that they had faced. ƒгeewebnovёl_com

But try as he might, Qian Yun failed to perceive the existence of any such connection between him and Xuhan.

This revelation gave Qian Yun all the information he needed. Something was wrong with this weirdo. He might know something! He failed the tests intentionally!

He immediately broke out of his meditation and began to scrutinize Han Xuhan, who looked completely oblivious to the fact that he had just been marked as an enemy.

"Oh well, I guess I’d not want to talk about it either if my scores were that low," Qian Yun said humorously, falling in line with Han Xuhan’s intentions to pull his guard down. He needed to get a little closer to this guy before attacking.

But just as he casually started walking towards the enemy, he discovered that Han Xuhan stepped back as well, his gaze still on the leaderboard as if he was just moving subconsciously.

Qian Yun took another step forward, and Han Xuhan took another step backward.

A grim look appeared on Qian Yun’s face. Immediately, he rushed toward the enemy, muscles and tendons working at full capacity, a single-minded drive taking control of his chaotic thoughts.

Han Xuhan, who was pretending to observe the leaderboard until now, instantly turned around and sprinted away as fast as he could.

"Brother Han Xuhan, why are you running from me?" Qian Yun asked playfully as they ran. If Han Xuhan were a martial path cultivator, Qian Yun might have been worried about catching up with him.

But let alone having an enhanced physique, he didn’t even have the fitness of a cultivator deep into Mystic Arts like Qian Yun. The chase would end soon, even if Han Xuhan took a daring dive into the distant, thicker layers of the fog.

"Who said I’m running away from you? I just really, really need to pee. Can’t do it in front of you, can I?" Han Xuhan shouted back.

Qian Yun wordlessly pulled out a stack of documents from his robe, where the most vicious laws in his newfound knowledge were being written in a frenzy, all from a simple command.

He was going to use the emerald orbs collected earlier to fuel these attacking law fragments. But as he pulled a ready document out of the stack and put his qi into it while running, his gaze inevitably fell on the target’s back, assessing how to–

Qian Yun’s pupils shrank as he realized that Han Xuhan was running headfirst into the area with the thickest fog. There was no hesitation or desperation in his movements. His steps were determined and measured, almost as if he had a plan.

In the fog, it would be hard to keep track of their surrounding elements. If Han Xuhan used this to his advantage to lead him to a trap...

Thinking of this possibility, Qian Yun slowed down. Sensing him falling back, Han Xuhan slowed down as well. In a matter of seconds, the situation had reversed!

"Brother Yun, why did you stop?" Han Xuhan shouted in an honest voice from the edge of the foggy area. "I thought you wanted to escort me to my peeing spot?"

"I did want to, but it looks like you want to pee somewhere that I wouldn’t dare to step into," Qian Yun retorted, playing this mock cat-and-mouse game the way his enemy did.

"What’s there to fear? If it’s someplace that even a weakling like me dares to enter, how could it intimidate you?"

Han Xuhan’s reply gave birth to a frustration in Qian Yun’s heart. The purification process inside the challenge halls was almost close to a satisfactory conclusion. Any unstable factors like this guy had to be eradicated as soon as possible.

It’d be the best outcome if he could drag Han Xuhan back inside one of the platforms as a contingency vessel for the corrupt spirituality. So he needed to end this farce and send back a clearance signal to the...

To who? The question stunned him again. Who was he working for so tirelessly?

"Brother Yun, if you’re not coming, should I go alone? Alright, then, I’m going~ This is your laaaast chaaance~!"

Han Xuhan’s singsong voice brought Qian Yun out of his confusion. He understood that Han Xuhan was trying to goad him into walking into a trap.

But what Han Xuhan didn’t understand was that every inch of soil of the Holy Land of Laws belonged to him, Zhao Weiqing!

In a small, suppressed corner of his mind, a voice faintly wondered who this Zhao Weiqing was, and why he was addressing himself as such.
