Chapter 147: Intervention

’Here goes...’

Rey unleashed his Spirit Art with calculated precision, flames erupting from his palms as he joined the desperate defense against the Tier 6 Chaos Dweller.

"Inferno Technique, Sequence #9: Sparkbirth!"

Divine fire materialized in controlled streams, targeting the creature’s shifting form.

The flames struck true, but the Chaos Dweller’s body simply absorbed the heat, its chaotic nature nullifying the ordered energy of Spirit Art.

Around him, other caravan guards were deploying their own Techniques with similar futility. Lightning crashed against the creature’s mass, earth constructs attempted to restrain it, wind blades sliced through its form—all of it ineffective against a being composed of pure Chaos.

"It’s not working!" Hesta screamed, retreating as a tendril of corrupted energy demolished the wagon she’d been sheltering behind. "Nothing’s damaging it!"

Rey gritted his teeth, analyzing the creature’s behavior through his enhanced perception. The Chaos Dweller wasn’t just immune to Spirit Art—it was actively feeding on the ordered mystical energy, growing slightly larger with each Technique that struck it.

’We’re making it stronger,’ he realized with cold clarity. ’Every attack fuels its chaotic nature.’

But he couldn’t stop fighting without exposing himself as suspicious. Ciel Varen wouldn’t abandon his comrades, wouldn’t hold back capabilities while people died around him. He had to maintain the performance.

"Focus fire on the same point!" Rey shouted to the other defenders, providing tactical coordination even while knowing it would fail. "Concentrate attacks to overwhelm its absorption!"

Three guards responded to his command, their Spirit Art converging on the Chaos Dweller’s center mass. Fire, lightning, and compressed air struck simultaneously—and the creature’s form rippled with what might have been satisfaction as it devoured the combined energy.

Then it counterattacked.

A wave of pure Chaos Energy erupted from the Dweller’s body, expanding in all directions like a shockwave. Rey threw up a defensive barrier—Inferno Technique, Sequence #7: Pyre Mantle—creating a shield of flames around himself.

The Chaos wave crashed against his defense and shattered it instantly. Rey was thrown backward, landing hard on the ground as corrupted energy burned across his arms. The pain was immediate and intense—Chaos Energy didn’t just damage flesh, it attacked the fundamental order that maintained physical form.

’Damn,’ Rey thought, forcing himself to his feet despite the agony. ’Even defensive Techniques can’t hold against it.’

The other guards who’d been caught in the wave weren’t as fortunate. Two of them simply ceased to exist, their bodies erased at the molecular level. The third survived but collapsed screaming, his left arm partially dissolved into nothingness.

The Chaos Dweller advanced through the caravan’s middle section, its massive form crushing wagons with casual movements. Torvald tried to organize a retreat, but the creature was moving faster than people could flee.

Rey activated another Technique, escalating to Mid-Sequence despite the risk of drawing attention.

"Convergence Technique, Sequence #8: Triad Flow!"

Fire, lightning, and wind merged in his hands, creating a hybrid elemental attack that launched toward the Chaos Dweller with devastating force. The fused elements struck the creature’s core, and for a moment—just a moment—its form destabilized.

The Dweller paused, its shifting body struggling to process the combined elemental assault. Then it adapted, absorbing the attack but taking slightly longer than it had with single-element Techniques.

’Fusion makes it work harder to consume the energy,’ Rey analyzed. ’But still not enough to actually damage it.’

He prepared another Convergence attack, gathering Ether for a more powerful strike. But before he could execute, the Chaos Dweller targeted him directly—apparently recognizing him as the greatest threat among the defenders.

A massive tendril of corrupted energy lashed out with speed that defied the creature’s size. Rey dodged, his enhanced reflexes barely sufficient to avoid the strike. The tendril hit the ground where he’d been standing, and reality itself fractured from the impact.

"Ciel, fall back!" Hesta called desperately. "You can’t fight that thing alone!"

But Rey couldn’t fall back without abandoning the performance. He activated his second Mid-Sequence Technique, committing to a show of capability that would justify his survival when others died.

"Tempest Technique, Sequence #5: Sky Tyranny!"

The atmosphere within his line of sight came under his absolute control. Wind currents responded to his will with perfect precision, creating a defensive barrier that redirected incoming attacks while channeling lightning toward the Chaos Dweller’s form.

The lightning struck repeatedly, each bolt calculated to hit from different angles, attempting to overwhelm the creature’s absorption through sheer volume and coordination.

And again, the Chaos Dweller paused—its form rippling with the effort of consuming so much ordered energy simultaneously.

But it adapted. It always adapted.

The creature’s body reconfigured, developing what might have been sensory organs across its surface. Then it released another wave of Chaos Energy, this one specifically targeting Rey’s position.

Rey’s Sky Tyranny barrier held for approximately three seconds before shattering. The corrupted energy washed over him, and he felt his physical form begin to destabilize—molecules losing cohesion, cells forgetting their structure, his very existence threatened by proximity to pure Chaos.

He burned Ether desperately, using Spirit Art to reinforce his body’s ordered nature against the Chaos assault. The energy clash was agonizing, like being torn apart and stitched back together simultaneously.

When the wave passed, Rey remained standing—barely. His arms were burned, his breathing ragged, and he’d expended more than half his Ether reserves just surviving the attack.

Around him, the caravan was in ruins. More than half the wagons destroyed, dozens of people dead or dying, and the Chaos Dweller continued its methodical devastation without any sign of slowing.

’This is bad,’ Rey acknowledged grimly. ’I can’t defeat it without revealing my Chaos Art, and even that might not be enough. I need those Category S Guards to arrive soon, or I’ll have to actually flee and abandon the plan.’

As if summoned by his thoughts, reality shifted.

Three figures materialized at the edge of the battlefield, their arrival marked by a surge of mystical pressure that dwarfed anything the caravan guards could produce. They wore Category S Guard uniforms, their presence radiating the kind of power that made it clear why they held elite status.

"Tier 6 Chaos Dweller," the lead Guard stated with professional detachment. "All civilians evacuate immediately. This area is now under Category S jurisdiction."

The surviving caravan members didn’t need to be told twice. They fled in all directions, abandoning wagons and cargo in their desperate retreat.

Rey remained where he was for a moment, playing the role of a capable guard reluctant to abandon his post. Then he too began retreating, moving toward the rear of the caravan where he could position himself for the next phase.

The time had come!
