Chapter 125: Extermination Begins (Part 2)

’If I maintain this pace, I’ll finish all seven before the Special Investigators even know something’s happening. They’re focused on the other Houses, not on the Fanged Serpent being systematically destroyed.’

But confidence couldn’t become arrogance.

Rey remained alert, watching for any sign that his activities had attracted unwanted attention.

He varied his approach slightly for each branch—different timing, different observation positions, different mystical signatures in the explosive payloads.

’Just in case,’ he reminded himself. ’The Special Investigators are formidable. If they do detect what’s happening and redirect their investigation, I need to be prepared to either accelerate or abort depending on circumstances.’

The fifth branch fell.

The sixth branch was eliminated.

Seven attacks across Elkrim in a single night, each one destroying a Fanged Serpent operational facility along with its staff.

At the Fanged Serpent headquarters—a fortified building in the Deep Market’s neutral territory—the leadership was descending into panic.

Kael, the scarred leader who’d been so confident during the conspiracy meeting, stared at communication Artifacts that kept delivering the same devastating news.

"Eastern branch destroyed. All personnel lost."

"Western branch destroyed. All personnel lost."

"Southern branch destroyed. All personnel lost."

The reports came in rapid succession, each one confirming what seemed impossible—their organization was being systematically annihilated.

"How is this happening?" one of the other leaders demanded, his voice cracking with barely controlled fear. "Seven simultaneous attacks? Who has that kind of capability and coordination?"

"The Red House?" another suggested desperately. "Maybe they discovered our involvement and—"

"The Red House is barely holding together!" Kael snapped. "They don’t have resources for this kind of operation! This is someone else, someone with serious power and planning."

Another communication came through—the northern branch, destroyed.

Personnel lost.

"We need to reach out to our allies," the third leader said. "The Blue Lotus, the Yellow Lily. They backed us for this expansion, they need to provide protection—"

Kael was already activating communication Artifacts, sending urgent messages to their supposed sponsors.

Nothing.

The Blue Lotus didn’t respond. The Yellow Lily’s reply was terse and unhelpful: "Unable to assist at this time. Recommend evacuating immediately."

"They’re abandoning us," Kael said, his voice hollow with realization. "Just like they pulled support for operations. Something’s happening that’s bigger than our conspiracy, and they’re leaving us exposed."

The fifth branch report came in.

Destroyed.

"What about the corrupted Red House advisors?" someone suggested frantically. "They have inside knowledge, resources—"

More communication attempts, more failures.

The advisors who’d been so cooperative weeks earlier were now unreachable or unwilling to engage.

"We’re on our own," Kael stated flatly.

The sixth branch fell.

Only one operational facility remained outside headquarters itself.

"There’s one more option," one of the leaders said desperately. "That Category S Guard who interrogated us during the conspiracy investigation. Selene. She gave us contact information, said to reach out if we discovered anything relevant to their investigation."

Kael grabbed the specialized communication Artifact they’d been given.

It was designed for emergency contact with the Special Investigators, a lifeline in case they uncovered information about the Desgarron incident perpetrators.

He activated it, sending an urgent message about the attacks, about the systematic destruction of their organization.

—No response.

Minutes passed. The seventh and final branch was reported destroyed.

"They’re not answering," Kael said, staring at the silent Artifact. "The only people who might help us, and they’re not responding."

The truth was becoming unavoidable—the Fanged Serpent was alone, exposed, and being hunted by someone with devastating capabilities and clear intent.

"We evacuate headquarters," Kael decided. "Split up, go underground, abandon the organization if necessary. Survival is—"

The lights in the headquarters went out.

All of them, simultaneously. Mystical illumination, technological lighting, even emergency backup systems. The entire building plunged into absolute darkness.

"Defensive positions!" Kael shouted, but his voice sounded hollow in the sudden silence.

Then, impossibly, a single light appeared.

A figure stood in the center of their meeting room, illuminated by a soft glow that seemed to originate from nowhere. The appearance was altered beyond recognition—younger than Modred Helt, harder-edged, radiating an aura that made it clear this was no ordinary criminal operative.

Rey had arrived.

But the Fanged Serpent leadership didn’t know it was Rey.

They saw only a threat, a force that had systematically destroyed their organization and now stood before them with calm certainty.

"Who—" Kael began.

"It doesn’t matter who I am," Rey interrupted, his voice modulated to disguise it completely. "What matters is that your organization ends tonight."

"We can negotiate!" one of the other leaders burst out desperately. "Resources, information, territory—whatever you want, we can—"

"Negotiation implies you have something I need," Rey said coldly. "You don’t. The Fanged Serpent betrayed the Red House, overextended based on support that’s now withdrawn, and made yourselves targets without the backing to survive retaliation."

He stepped forward, and the Fanged Serpent leadership instinctively backed away.

"Your branches are destroyed. Your allies have abandoned you. Your sponsors won’t answer your calls. Even the authorities you thought might protect you are pursuing other investigations and won’t arrive in time to save you."

Kael’s hand moved toward a weapon, but Rey’s gesture froze him in place—not through physical restraint but through the sudden realization that any resistance would be futile.

"You made choices," Rey continued, his tone carrying absolute finality. "Betrayed an organization for ambition, allied with powers you thought would guarantee success, committed resources to a conspiracy that seemed certain to pay off. Those were calculated risks."

His expression hardened beneath the disguise.

"But calculations can be wrong. And tonight, you’re learning the price of miscalculation."

The glow around Rey intensified, Chaos Energy becoming visible as it gathered with purposeful intent.

"It’s too late for regrets. Too late for bargains. Your time is up. You cannot escape."

He raised his hand, and the Fanged Serpent leaders finally understood the full scope of what was about to happen.

"Tonight, the Fanged Serpent ceases to exist."

[A/N: So far, Rey has been on a generational run. I wonder if anything will happen now...]
