Chapter 36: First Incident (1)

"Cough!.. what the hell?" Noah coughed as he pushed himself to his feet.

His back was in pain.

His vision was still blurred. Blinking his eyes to see clearly, he could hear distant cries of students asking for help.

"What... what just happened?" He couldn’t make any sense of the situation.

He leaned back against the wall.

Slowly, his vision became clear. He turned around to see that, just some distance away from him, a staff member who was working in the café was also sitting on the ground, groaning in pain.

He walked toward him with slow steps.

BOOM!

Another sound of something huge breaking came from outside.

He knelt near the man. "Hey... are you okay?"

The man, who was shaking his head to come to his senses, nodded at Noah’s words.

"Yes... I am okay... but we need to get out... this place is under attack.."

"Kyaah!"

"Arrrghhhh!"

"Grarrghh!"

"Run! Run!"

Screams of students and workers came from outside the café. While a few students lay inside the café, hurt.

"Instructors might come here soon... so stay here..." Saying that, Noah got up.

Most of the workers in the academy were low-ranking people with little to no experience in fighting.

’So the first scenario of the game started,’ Noah thought as his eyes turned sharp.

Noah could tell that if those intruders, whoever they were, attacked openly,

"That means they came prepared."

’Instructors might not be able to come here. The place might be covered with some kind of barrier to stop anyone from entering this place. And unless the main protagonist kills the enemy, it won’t open. That’s what happens in every novel or game.’

Noah constructed the scenario in short.

He walked towards the entrance. The glass wall was shattered. He wanted to see what actually happened.

The building opposite was destroyed. Its front was shattered and fire had caught inside. Smoke was rising from it.

Students were running for their lives while screaming.

’What the hell? Why are they running away rather than fighting? Because they are extras?’ Noah thought with frowned.

But then he understood the reason of their running.

SCREEEEECHHH!

A high-pitched scream of something unknown came from the front. Something emerged from the burning building.

It was huge and tall. Noah’s eyes widened in horror. "Monster..."

It was a monster.

It was lizard-like in appearance. Its skin was thick and dark maroon in color. It was more than a few meters long. It had yellow-colored vertical slit reptilian eyes.

But what shocked him wasn’t the monster. It was what the monster was holding in its mouth.

A young woman’s body hung between its jaws. She was wearing the first-year academy uniform, now soaked in blood. The monster’s massive fangs had sunk deep into her stomach, piercing through her body like spears. Her body twitched slightly, still alive.

She was still breathing.

Tears streamed down her face, mixing with blood as her eyes trembled with unbearable pain and pure terror. Her hands weakly pushed against the monster’s face, trying to escape, but her strength was fading fast. The beast gave her no chance. Its jaws clenched harder.

A sickening cracking sound echoed as the fangs dug deeper into her body. Blood burst out from her stomach like a fountain, splashing onto the road, onto the monster, onto the ground beneath them.

"ARRRGGHHHHHHHH!!"

Her scream tore through the air. A raw, painful, desperate scream that sounded more like something breaking than a human voice.

Then, with one final bite, her body split into two halves. The upper half fell from the monster’s mouth and hit the ground with a wet thud, while the lower half remained hanging from its jaws for a moment before dropping into a pool of blood.

Noah was on the other side of the road where the monster was present. The scene made Noah’s breathing rough. His heart started to beat faster in fear against his chest.

Thump

Thump

Thump

He gulped down his saliva.

Then the monster’s vertical slit eyes met his blue eyes.

"Shit!" Noah cursed as he ran to the right side, running through the road.

Then suddenly that salamander-like monster dashed towards Noah.

SCREEEECHHH!!!

It screamed loudly while following him.

"Tch!" Noah clicked his tongue as mana wrapped around his feet to increase his speed.

But the beast was not slow either.

Its mouth opened wide, but this time it didn’t try to scream. Instead, something hot came out of its mouth. A beam of fire, like a flamethrower, shot towards Noah.

Noah gritted his teeth and threw his body to the left side.

BOOM!

The fire hit against the tree that was standing on the side of the street.

Noah rolled down and then got up.

A spear appeared in his right hand from the storage ring. The monster was much closer now. He couldn’t run away.

"Fuck... I can’t run away."

He was afraid. He was really afraid after watching the sight of that woman dying by the monster.

But he couldn’t run anymore. The monster had covered the distance between them. If he tried to run away, he would be caught and killed, just like that woman.

His grip tightened on the spear.

In that case, if he needed to survive, then he had to fight. If he could not kill this monster, then he needed to buy time until someone came to help him.

The huge monster dashed toward Noah with its open mouth, rows of sharp teeth visible as saliva and blood dripped from its jaws.

Students were still running everywhere.

"Run! Run away!!"

"Monster! There’s a monster!!"

"Help! Somebody help!"

"Ahhhh! It’s coming this way!! Its too stronger."

Some students fell while running, others dragged their injured friends. Smoke was rising from the burning building, and the smell of fire and blood filled the air.

The monster’s jaws opened wide enough to swallow his head whole.

Noah’s eyes sharpened. His heart started to calm slightly. He couldn’t survive if he acted like a coward.

He had fought a huge bear monster before, gone through a life and death battle, and somehow survived.

So he would do it again. To survive, he would fight a monster stronger than him.

"Let’s do it!"

He stomped his foot on the ground and activated his ability. Two ice spikes suddenly shot up from the road just below where the monster stepped.

CRACK!

The sharp tips of the spikes lifted the monster off the ground, piercing into its thick maroon skin. The spikes dug slightly into its flesh, and dark blood dripped down the ice.

SCREEEECHHHHH!!!

The monster let out a loud, ear-piercing scream and thrashed its body violently. However, the attack did not do much damage to its body.
