Chapter 597: Chapter 0556 Li Yuwen Left Speechless (1)_2

Li Yuwen glared at her again, is this brat really trying to provoke her? "The cat was chasing mice, it was noisy."

Cui Xi tilted her head, "Really? I didn’t hear the cat chasing mice."

"Then there’s something wrong with your ears, I heard it." Li Yuwen said earnestly.

Cui Xi rubbed her ears, her ears seemed fine.

Pei Shenyan looked at Li Yuwen’s face, "Yu Wen, there are indeed dark circles under your eyes, you didn’t sleep well last night. Go to bed early tonight, the countryside is quieter than the market street."

That was certainly true, what Pei Shenyan said.

Though the market street is close to the village, the market stalls are few.

But after all, it’s a street, there are those who get up after midnight to make buns, and those who come to occupy stalls selling fish, chicken, and tofu snacks in the fourth watch.

There are even those who start dragging pigs and sheep to the market for slaughter in the dead of night.

A row of shops is right in front of Pei Shenyan’s residence, and the shopkeepers open their doors before dawn.

Generally, the streets start bustling at first light, but on market days, the hustle and bustle starts by the fourth watch before dawn.

In the countryside, however, it becomes quiet just as night falls, other than a few crowing chickens in the fifth watch, the night is peaceful.

Li Yuwen gave him a look and agreed, "Yes, the street is indeed noisy."

"Then go to bed early tonight, sleep after dinner." Pei Shenyan smiled and said.

Of course, after dinner one should sleep, but where to sleep?

Li Yuwen regretted her impulsiveness, not inquiring thoroughly before coming.

The Wei Family then arrived.

A farming man around fifty years old, carrying a basket of bowls and chopsticks, came with Wei Family’s eldest son and Wei San, and a young woman carrying some food arrived.

Wei Dalang held a steaming pot of soup, and Wei San carried a tray with four steamed dishes on it.

The young woman, presumably Wei family’s daughter-in-law, carried a lidded clay pot. Farmers typically use such small clay pots for cooking porridge or holding rice.

Rice is steamed in a large pot and when family eat, whoever eats goes to the kitchen to scoop from the iron pot. But when guests arrive, it’s not appropriate to let them serve themselves; the hosts help by serving the rice, running back and forth to the kitchen doesn’t look good.

Those with etiquette serve the rice into a clay pot, place it over a jar with boiling water, and the jar sits on a small stove simmering.

The stove is placed in the corner of the main room.

This ensures that the rice stays warm throughout mealtime.

"Uncle Wei, it’s enough to let Dalang bring the food, why did you come yourself? Have you eaten yet, Uncle Wei?" Pei Shenyan nodded, smiling toward the fifty-year-old farmer.

This was the father of Wei Dalang and Wei San.

Uncle Wei smiled, "Mr. Pei is the guest, please eat first, Mr. Pei, we can eat anytime."

He called his eldest son, daughter-in-law, and youngest daughter to set up the meal.

Wei family’s eldest daughter-in-law placed the rice on the stove.

She took bowls from the basket Uncle Wei brought and placed them on the table.

Li Yuwen sat by the table, watching the Wei family busy themselves.

Wei San placed the chopsticks in front of Li Yuwen, and Li Yuwen glanced at those hands, raising her eyebrows slightly and gave a soft snort inwardly.

Wei San’s hands were actually neatly groomed, almost matching hers.

Born in a farmer’s family, yet her hands were delicate and tender, if she’s not a witch, what is she?

Once the food was arranged, Uncle Wei cheerfully said, "There’s not much to offer in the countryside, Mr. Pei and Mrs. Pei, please don’t mind."

"It’s very nice, Uncle Wei, you are too polite." Pei Shenyan smiled and said.

After organizing dinner, Uncle Wei left with his children.

Pei Shenyan called Fusheng, Pei Ji, and Cui Xi to join the meal.

There was one stool short, Pei Ji brought a long bench from the outer room to sit and eat.

Yesterday Pei Ji accompanied Pei Shenyan to the Wei Family’s house.

After finishing the meal, Li Yuwen called Pei Ji into an empty room next door to ask about Pei Shenyan’s fall.

"Ji Bo, although you are an elder and a long-time servant by my husband’s side, I still have to say, why didn’t you notify me immediately about my husband’s ankle injury?" Li Yuwen said disgruntledly.

Pei Ji opened his eyes wide, "Young mistress doesn’t like young master, so I thought there was no point in telling you."

Li Yuwen, "..." She angrily said, "Who says I don’t care about him? I am his wife!"

Pei Ji was the old servant, the one who settled here with Pei Shenyan holding him as a child, he raised Pei Shenyan like a son.
