Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Daddy Protects Mommy

Chloe stood in the airport lobby clutching her suitcase, when suddenly she heard a childish voice calling out.

"Mom."

Hearing that voice, Chloe spun around, and saw Julian sprinting towards her in his little overalls.

The boy’s face brimmed with irrepressible excitement.

Seeing Julian like this, Chloe’s eyes grew a little misty.

She quickly dropped her suitcase and dashed towards Julian.

"Julian."

Julian was sweating at the tip of his nose from running, and when he fell into Chloe’s arms, he was out of breath.

He threw his arms around Chloe’s neck, planting kiss after kiss on her cheeks.

His eyes showed how reluctant he was to part, but he didn’t cry.

Instead, he smiled and pulled something from his little backpack to give to Chloe.

It was a photo album—a miniature made from pictures taken on Chloe’s birthday with him.

Seeing this gift, Chloe’s eyes grew red.

Her voice trembled with tears: "Thank you, baby. With this, I can see you every day."

Julian nodded seriously: "Love you, Mom."

Hearing this, Chloe could hardly bear to leave.

"Julian, Mommy needs to go through security now. We’ll call each other on video from now on."

Julian was reluctant, but sensibly waved his hand, "Bye, Mom."

Chloe pulled her suitcase, turning away reluctantly.

She had just started towards the boarding gate when a deep, hoarse voice called out behind her.

"Chloe."

At the sound, Chloe froze in place, her back stiffening.

It felt just like the moment when she had just landed here by plane.

She slowly turned and saw Silas Prescott in a black suit standing not far away.

On his refined face was an expression she couldn’t quite decipher.

Chloe felt all sorts of indescribable emotions well up inside her.

After all, this was the man she’d loved since she was a young girl.

Someone she’s cherished for so long—how could she ever truly hate him?

But those youthful affections had long been plagued by fear, garbling whatever "love" might once have meant to her.

Chloe gave Silas a faint, distant smile, her voice clear and gentle.

"Mr. Prescott, take care."

With just those few words, she wrapped up all her wishes for him.

She hoped everything would go smoothly for him, hoped he’d move on and find happiness again.

But as the words left her lips, it was as if an invisible hand gripped her heart tight.

It hurt so much she could barely breathe.

She hurriedly grabbed her suitcase and walked toward the boarding gate.

She hadn’t gone far when her phone suddenly rang.

Seeing it was her mother, she answered right away.

"Mom, I’m already at the airport, about to board, don’t worry."

But the next second, she heard her mother sobbing on the other end.

"Chloe, someone just came and took your father away. They said the bridge your father designed collapsed, several people were killed or injured, and since he’s the main designer, he’ll have to take the main responsibility. He might go to prison for the rest of his life."

"Chloe, I trust it’s not your dad’s fault. Someone must be trying to frame him. We need to find a lawyer to help him."

Hearing this, Chloe was rooted to the spot, in shock.

That bridge had always been her father’s proudest achievement—just days ago he’d begged her to wait a little longer, so she could see the opening ceremony.

He’d always regarded his work as more important than his life itself—how could he ever cut corners or do something dishonest for money?

Chloe immediately tried to comfort her mother: "Mom, please don’t worry, I’ll come back right now. I promise I’ll get Dad out."

Mrs. Nash hesitated: "But this isn’t something that can be solved in a day or two. If Silas finds out who you really are, you’ll never be able to escape him."

"Mom, Chloe risked her life for me once—how could I abandon you now just to protect myself? Trust me, I’ll be careful. I’m heading home now."

Hanging up, Chloe was about to turn around and saw Silas standing right behind her.

There was an inscrutable look in his dark eyes.

As if he’d been waiting for her to turn around all this time.

Noticing her pale complexion, Silas walked over, his voice warm: "What happened? Was there a problem with the security check?"

Hearing him ask, Chloe instinctively wanted to tell him everything, ask him for help rescuing her father.

But when she opened her mouth, she swallowed the words.

Because she knew, Silas Prescott was a businessman through and through.

If she asked for his help, he’d surely demand something in return.

Chloe didn’t want to be entangled with him anymore.

She pressed her lips together and said, "My dad’s had an accident. I need to go back, now."

Silas feigned surprise, "What happened that’s got you so flustered?"

"My dad designed a bridge and it collapsed, several people were hurt or killed. He’s been taken away, I have to save him."

Hearing that, Silas frowned slightly, "Don’t panic. Go home and understand the situation first."

Lucy Rhodes held Chloe’s arm to comfort her: "Dr. Nash, don’t be afraid. My brother knows the best lawyers—he won’t let anything happen to your dad."

Chloe forced herself to steady her emotions and nodded, "Let me go home and see what’s going on first."

Lucy Rhodes grabbed her suitcase: "Come on, we’ll take you. We’ll see what’s happening, too."

On the way back, Lucy drove.

Chloe had to ride in the back seat with Silas, and although Julian was there too, Silas’s intense gaze burned into her, making her feel on edge. Just then, Chloe’s phone rang—it was her husband. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Seeing that contact name, Silas’s eyes unconsciously darkened.

He stared at Chloe’s face, searching for any clue.

Feeling his heated gaze, Chloe nervously answered the call.

Her voice trembled, "Honey, something’s happened to Dad. The police took him away. What should I do? I’m so scared."

Albie Kane immediately reassured her: "Don’t worry, honey. Fries and I will catch the next flight. I promise, as long as I’m here, nothing will happen to Dad."

The meekness Chloe showed with Albie was a sharp contrast to the composure she displayed before Silas.

It made Silas feel like a heavy stone was pressing on his chest.

He could hardly breathe.

The warmth in his eyes gradually darkened.

But it vanished quickly.

He looked calmly at Chloe: "Don’t worry, I’ll help you look into what happened."

Julian didn’t know what had happened, but he could feel his mom’s pain.

He kept stroking her cheek with his little hand, trying to comfort her.

His cuddle helped relieve some of Chloe’s tension.

She gently stroked Julian’s head: "Don’t worry, Mommy’s going to be okay."

Julian took Chloe’s hand and placed it into Silas’s palm.

Then, looking solemnly at Chloe, he said, "Don’t be afraid. Daddy will protect Mommy."
