Ensnaring his Dark Moon-Chapter 198: Confession
Luciana never expected that even after one year, they would be in the same position.
Esme had yet to remember everything.
From her words, it seemed like she could visualize her past but she could not grasp it.
Esme needed a push. A strong push. But that push might end her life.
But one thing that had changed was the relationship between her and Cardan.
She was not as wary of him as she first was and he was not as brutally manipulative as he first appeared.
That’s how she felt until now.
Deal. She almost forgot about their deal but he just had to remind her.
’’I...’’ she looked at him, ’’...won’t do something that will harm Esme,’’ her fingers curled into a fist. The guilt of whatever events transpired in the Daven Castle a year ago still weighed on her shoulder. Somehow, she felt like she was also responsible for everything that happened.
If her mother was alive today, she would be so disappointed with her decisions.
She has made a mess of her entire life with her own hands, she has ruined most of her life by being a shallow, ruthless mermaid. And Luciana knew... she knew that if her mother was alive, she would not be proud at all.
She could not rectify her past mistakes. But in the future, she did not want to be this kind of terrible person anymore. If possible, the least she could do to redeem herself even a little was by taking care of Esme.
Cardan looked amused by her words. His gaze gauzed her up from head to toe before he spoke up, ’’For someone so small, so delicate, you have an awfully huge amount of confidence.’’
Luciana straightened up, ’’That’s because I am certain that if I go down, I will take others down with me.’’
’’Unfortunately for you...’’ Cardan ignored her words, ’’...When you made a deal with a person like me, you should have thought about where it will lead you.’’
Luciana’s lips parted as she glanced at the playful smile on his face, ’’What do you want me to do?"
Cardan smiled mysteriously.
...
"The guards weren’t lying.’’
Esme tilted her head as she watched Jeremiah approaching her, ’’About what?"
’’I was told that you came back from the tea party a long time ago,’’ the man said, ’’But instead of coming inside the Crystal Castle, you kept sitting here on this boulder.’’
Esme glanced at the boulder she was sitting on, her tail half dipped in the sea.
She closed her eyes, and her body gradually transformed. Her tail was replaced by her legs and her gown covered her body as the scales and fins disappeared.
Esme glanced at the moon.
’’Lost in thoughts?" Jeremiah asked as he sat on the boulder beside her.
’’Your thoughts,’’ Esme tilted her head to look at him, ’’I was thinking about you, Jer.’’
Jeremiah’s smile grew wider, ’’That’s a surprise. But a good one, I must say. It makes me happy to know that,’’ he held her hand, placing a chaste kiss on the back of it, ’’How was the tea party?"
’’Say,’’ Esme tilted her chin, her eyes narrowed slightly, ’’If I ask you a question, will you answer me honestly,’’ she did not beat around the bush.
Jeremiah was stunned for a moment before he closed his eyes, ’’Go ahead,’’ The look on his face told her that he was already expecting this.
’’The story you told me...’’ Esme glanced back at the moon, ’’How much of it was true? Did I save you when we were young? Did you know me back then? Did I love you?"
’’It was a lie,’’ the man confessed after a moment of silence.
Esme’s continued looking at the moon quietly.
’’It was a lie that you saved me. But it wasn’t a lie that I fell in love with you when I was young. You were saving someone else and I was there. I saw you being so brave. You were so thin, so tiny for your age as if you could be snapped with one pull but still, you were righteous and stubborn. I fell in love with you the moment I laid my eyes on you,’’ Jeremiah lowered his head, and a helpless smile formed on his lips.
He continued speaking, ’’Growing up, I was confined to the Crystal Castle because I was the heir apparent for this Kingdom. The king has no descendants hence he selected a few special mermaids and mermen from our kingdom to choose the candidate for this position. I didn’t want it but when my mother was alive, she had high hopes for our Norwell family. Lucian was not as powerful as his sister and having lost her mother at a young age, Luciana gradually became emotionally unstable, bullied people, and she was greedy, vain, and manipulative, all of which were not desirable traits in a ruler.’’
’’Luciana is not vain, she is not any of what you say,’’ Esme interrupted him calmly.
Jeremiah smiled, ’’I know you are friends and it makes me happy to know that she has someone she could lean on now but she is a few years younger than me. I have seen her growing up in front of my eyes and I know how she is. She was not fit to be a ruler. My brother’s age was not appropriate nor did the King trust him that much. The only member left of our family was me.
I didn’t want to fight for the throne but I wanted to fulfill the wish of my dead mother. I wanted to keep the name of our family and make her happy. I just never realized it would come with sacrifices.
I was chosen by the King over the other candidates but it took him years to acknowledge me.
I was confined in the castle to be trained for the position. I was being taught about politics and war while a war was going on inside me. I wanted to see the world.
After a lot of contemplation, I set my feet out of the castle. Whenever the King was not around, I would sneak out of the castle and go to the distant kingdoms.
I have a special ability. I can teleport from one water surface to another. From this sea to another sea in any distant kingdom and I always used it even if it drained my powers.
I wanted to feel my freedom, even though it was always short-lived. That’s when I met you and my world, my heart changed.’’
’’Who was I?" Esme looked at him, ’’My family? Who were they? Who was I saving? Why was I saving that person when I was defenseless like you say?"
’’I don’t know about your family. You were alone at that time. And the boy you were saving, he was dressed in shabby clothes, like a beggar. If I am not wrong, he was being attacked by people and you were saving him,’’ Jeremiah frowned, ’’Maybe out of pity. But I liked you for that. For your bravery.’’
’’Did you never see me again?" Esme asked him.
