Chapter 196: You’d fall in love

The Norwell Family covered their faces as the glow in the sea intensified.

’’This beast was special,’’ Marcus said, ’’...Just like its Master.’’

’’But Father, I don’t think she will sit still. She wants revenge on the people of higher order,’’ Lucian gulped, ’’And what if we are dragged into this?"

’’We won’t be,’’ Marcus Norwell said.

Luciana glanced at him from the corner of her eyes under the golden glow that enveloped both Esme and Leo at this moment. Her long golden hair flew in the wind, framing her face, ’’You sound confident, father,’’ she said, trying to get some information out of him.

And she succeeded because the man looked at both of them proudly, ’’You don’t know about this because this is your first time coming with me to the land to catch one of our kind. You have been to the world of humans before but you have never come across something like this,’’ he said, pointing his palm towards Esme.

Luciana agreed with him. They have been out for work-related matters, traveling from one kingdom to another but they have never come across such a situation.

’’In the past years, I have caught many of our kind who were out there, roaming in between humans disguised as one. The child of a human and mer is never fully mer, just like this Princess here. They are half mer and half human. They are the kind of weaker ones. If they are fully mer, they die at birth because of lack of water.’’

’’Weak?" Luciana frowned, ’’If Esme was weak, how could she have scared away a witch?"

’’It was a fluke or maybe it was due to some relic that Prince Aleister gave her. But a half-human half-mermaid like her is useless,’’ The man said, ’’And what more? The moment she comes in her real form, she would lose all her memories as a human.’’

’’W-What?" Luciana was dumbfounded.

’’That would lessen our worries,’’ Lucian said.

’’If someone tries to remind her of the past or if she remembers her life as a human, then there are chances that she would lose her life. These kinds are just like cursed creatures, they don’t belong to the sea nor do they belong to the land. They are destined to a sad life filled with confusion and emptiness.’’

Luciana lowered her head as she looked in Esme’s direction. The woman’s head was visible out of the sea.

As the golden glow started dimming, she watched Leo jumping above Esme’s head.

Esme’s pale lips parted slightly.

Luciana stepped forward and lowered her head.

’’Al, it hurts...’’ the words left Esme’s mouth before a teardrop rolled down her cheeks, turning into a small pearl that floated on the water.

’’These kinds are just vagabonds,’’ Luciana heard her father continuing.

She turned around to look at him, ’’Father, I think you should not speak about Esme like that.’’

Marcus raised an eyebrow at her.

’’By saying that, you are disrespecting our God too. If being torn between the land and the sea makes her a vagabond, then what about our God Zephyr, who was torn in between the heavens and the sea?"

*Flashback ends*

Cardan glanced at the sea, ’’So, she can’t remember anything.’’

’’It will risk her life,’’ Luciana said.

’’Why is your Uncle, that old man, obsessed with Esme?’’ Cardan asked.

’’He is not an old man,’’ Luciana chided, ’’He is just two years older than me,’’ If the women in the sea who admired Jeremiah heard Cardan’s words, they would throw stones at him.

She glanced at the man.

But then... who knows, maybe they will change sides and start admiring this man instead?

’’But he is still your uncle,’’ Cardan said disdainfully, ’’So, old man.’’

Luciana felt like she could not bother to knock some sense into his head, ’’Uncle fell in love with Esme.’’

’’He is the heir that the King chose. All his life, he has stayed inside the castle, preparing for the day when he would take over the throne,’’ Cardan said, ’’And Esme has never come to this kingdom before. Most of her life was spent in Nevesray and Visteria. Then, when did the love take place?"

Even Luciana had this question in her mind, ’’From what Father said, Uncle had sneaked out from the castle a few times, unbeknownst to the King,’’ she mulled over it for a moment before explaining further, ’’Although, creatures like us reside in the sea. But some of them who made love with a human left their offspring on the land. Some of those children are born as humans but some are special, like Esme.’’

’’You told me about that,’’ Cardan arched a brow, ’’Human and a mer making love. That sounds adventurous,’’ his tongue roamed over his bottom lips.

’’That look on your face disgusts me,’’ Luciana glared at him.

’’Did you just admit that you were looking at my face?’’ Cardan flashed a smile at her, ’’I told you not to. You’d fall in love.’’

’’Even if you are the last man in this world, I won’t fall in love with you,’’ Luciana rolled her eyes.

’’Am I that bad?" Cardan glanced at her face.

’’What do you think?" Luciana sighed, ’’So, when one of our kind is left on the land with the humans, it puts us at risk of being exposed to them. The humans don’t have in-depth knowledge about the existence of mers.’’

’’So your father collects those special half-human half-mers and brings them back to the sea?"

Luciana nodded, ’’But most of the time, the child of a mer and human is born a human which doesn’t cause trouble, or they are born as a mer which causes their death...’’

’’They die?" Cardan frowned.

’’Yes, a mer child must be born in the water to survive. Creatures like us adapt to our powers as we grow up but when we are born, we don’t know how to transform. So, the mers who are born on the land end up dying minutes after their birth because they can’t breathe on land without using their powers and they are too young to know what powers are.’’

’’Then, Esme...’’
