Chapter 188: Dead men tell no tales

’’She disappeared too. Maybe she is dead, maybe not,’’ the man picked up the exquisite golden comb and stroked it with his fingers, ’’The thieves claimed they found it in a small box in the Prince’s room and they heard some rumors too. I just had to give them some of our useless tears which they think are some treasure and spilled everything to me. The remaining maids and servants in that wrecked Castle speak of how much the Prince doted on his woman. I assume he made it for her...’’

Esme grabbed the comb from his hand and looked at it with wide eyes, ’’It holds such a deep meaning,’’ Is there a man who would make a comb for a woman?

Just how lucky and special was that woman for her to be adored by a man to such an extent?

’’But he was rumored to be a beast. He was cruel...’’

’’Someone who is this thoughtful...’’ Esme stroked the comb in her hands, ’’How can he be a beast?" she whispered.

The shop owner laughed, ’’Lady, I can’t be certain that he made it but I assumed it.’’

’’And why would you assume?" She glanced at him, ’’There has to be a reason you assumed he made it, right?"

The man looked at her, a little bit of exasperation apparent on his face.

He seemed to be contemplating why she was so interested in this but then, this was how the night market worked. Every customer who came here to buy something had the right to know everything about the artifact they were buying. That’s why shop owners like them paid for the story and meaning that any of these things held and they sold them while selling these.

He was just astounded because none of his customers have ever been this enthusiastic about the background of anything they bought.

But then, this mermaid was his rich customer so he forced a smile on his face and explained patiently, ’’Because, if he was not the one then who could it be?’’ The man seemed to be talking more to himself than her, ’’I sense the divine powers that infused this flowers and pearls together and made this golden comb.’’

’’Did the Prince possess divine powers?"

’’I am unaware of it, my lady,’’ he shook his head but before she could ask him another question, he continued, ’’But nobody in the kingdom knew the extent of the Prince’s powers. Some said he was a weakling who was banished to Enchantment Forest by his father when he was young while some said that the signs during his birth were far too auspicious for him to be a disaster. But those humans are just fools. How could a weak young boy survive and walk out alive of a dangerous deathtrap like the Enchantment Forest?"

Esme did not know what Enchantment forest was but from the man’s words, it was apparently a forest filled with dangers.

’’Since he made it alive, it meant he was not a weakling. There had to be some mystery about him,’’ Even the man did not seem to understand the logic in his words. After all, how could a human boy possess the powers of a god? ’’But alas, only that Prince knew the truth and he took it with him to his grave. Dead men tell no tales.’’

Esme lowered her head to look at the comb. And after what seemed like a long time, she opened her mouth, ’’Maybe his lover was aware of his secret tale. Maybe... she knew the truth that he hid from the entire world,’’ the words unconsciously escaped her mouth.

’’Maybe,’’ the owner sighed and as his focus shifted to the comb in her hands, he looked at her face with glowing eyes, ’’That is all we know about this sacred relic that shows their love for each other and so...’’

Esme had another intense urge to roll her eyes. Just some time ago, he was saying that the Prince was a beast and this woman might be his mistress but now, he was back into being this sly shop owner, trying to sell it to her with his sweet words.

Women are usually blinded by love and jewelry. And hence, he was trying to lure her into this using those.

’’Lady, are you excited about having this?" he asked.

Esme felt complicated after hearing the story and for some reason, she did not want to miss out on this thing. She even gave her word that she will buy it so, ’’Yes,’’ she nodded absent-mindedly, ’’How much is it?"

’’3000 crystals,’’ the man answered and his tail was cutting through the water as it swung back and forth.

Esme nodded, ’’3000 crystals—’’ her eyes widened all of a sudden, ’’How much?!" Did she hear him right?

’’Yes, this comb is special. You should know it by now, My Lady.’’

"..."

Esme glanced at the comb in her hand. 100 crystals would be enough to buy one of these small huts like shops in the sea.

With that many crystals on her hand, she would have a small castle of her own if she wanted and she could keep two mermaids for Leo to dance with. He has been doing that lately.

Things this expensive were not rare. She has seen it before in the Crystal Castle. Their chandelier, the beds, and many other things would amount to this much or even more. But Esme doubted that even a crystal castle would have a comb worth this much.

’’My Lady, is there some problem?" the merman asked, ’’Is it because you don’t carry such a huge amount of crystals with you?"

And Esme gaped at him. Any problem? Other than problems, what else is left at the moment?

She was suddenly reminded of the fact that she came to the sea for the tea party. She was not here to shop and hence, she didn’t really have crystals with her.

Regardless, even if she went back to the castle to get crystals, she did not have that many crystals with her.
