Chapter 187: That mysterious woman

The merman eyed his surroundings before looking at the comb that was back on his trove, ’’This comb is mysterious in unexplainable ways.’’

’’I am certain that an insightful person like you would find a way to explain its unexplained mystery,’’ Esme adjusted the veil on her face, leaning further closer to inspect the comb.

The man’s chest puffed up in pride after being praised by the rich and beautiful lady. So what if she had a veil on her face? Her beauty could not be hidden despite that and she was so graceful.

’’It contains divine powers,’’ he said, his voice nothing more than a gentle breeze, and Esme could not have caught on his words if she was not blessed with such keen ears.

’’What is that?" she glanced at him. The powers they possessed were known as the mer’s magic. The powers that the humans born in royalty had was mortal magic.

But, what were divine powers?

Something flashed in her mind. Something golden and Esme squeezed her eyes shut because of the sudden tremor that shot in her head.

But she soon opened her eyes and stabilized her expressions before the man could notice anything amiss.

’’Humans and mers have their own powers and so do the gods. The gods that possess divine powers hold the highest position in the heavens. It’s said that only the God of Death and our God, the God of water possessed divine powers,’’ The man said.

Gods? Esme wanted to ask him more about it but he would find it weird if she asked him questions related to this. He was talking about it like even a child would know about these things but she felt like a clueless naive flower. She did not understand what he was talking about but she could try to understand...

’’Our God used to have these powers and although we don’t possess them but we can feel it. You should know how our hearts get stimulated everytime we pass by that mysterious door in the sea. Nobody knows what lies behind the door but we all know our God used to live there, so maybe it’s some ancient relics or the remnants of his powers that we resonate with.’’

Esme nodded, still as clueless, ’’But if the Gods possess divine powers, then why does this comb has that?’’ she glanced at the beautiful object, ’’Something that came from the land of humans, why would it have the powers that only the two Great Gods possessed?"

’’That’s the miracle, my lady, that’s the very miracle I was talking about. The clueless humans are falling in love with our useless tears but oh, do they know the treasure they threw my way unknowingly?" Smiling like a shrewd merchant, the man continued, ’’An object that belongs to humans but has the powers of Gods. It’s mysterious and it’s this enchanting. The value it holds is unexplainable in words but only a person like you is worthy of it,’’ he said, selling it to her discreetly once again.

Esme had the urge to roll her eyes but she blinked instead. She was mostly demure, calm, and elegant. That’s how people around her described her but why would she think of doing something so impolite?

She has not been herself since her nightmare yesterday.

She blinked again, ’’I have faith that you can try to explain it to me,’’ she glanced at him earnestly.

’’Certainly,’’ The man smiled, ’’I obtained this treasure from a group of thieves who stole it from a wrecked Castle.’’

’’A wrecked Castle?" Esme tilted her head to look at him.

’’The Daven Castle of Visteria...’’

Esme’s mouth turned dry. Visteria. The King mentioned it over lunch and now it was mentioned once again in front of her.

It was just... a coincidence. It should be.

’’The glorious kingdom met its downfall overnight. The King died, the Duke and the Duchess disappeared and the Prince mysteriously vanished after his death,’’ the shop owner whispered, his huge eyes rolling from left to right to observe every little movement around him, ensuring that no one was hearing them, ’’This comb... the thieves claimed to steal it from the Prince’s room.’’

’’What would a man do with this?" Combs can be useful to men but this one right here did not look like something a man would use.

’’He had a woman. They lived together, they shared a room. The thieves found countless gowns and things that would belong to a woman,’’ the man said.

’’Was she his wife?" Esme tilted her head to the side.

’’No, the subjects would have known if it was their future queen. Marrying a prince is not a private matter. People speak. Some say she was his lover,’’ he answered her, ’’One of the thieves heard the rumor that she was just an ordinary maid who worked in the Daven Castle and she seduced the Prince so he took her to his room. The Prince had a reputation of defiling young maids and he was infamous for his heartless ways.’’

Esme’s lips twitched, ’’He does not sound like a decent man.’’

’’He is no more so that should make up for his sins,’’ The man narrowed his eyes, ’’Some said that the woman was his fiancee, the person he was set to marry, and the late King had no objections to their marriage. While, from other sources, I have heard that the woman was a Princess too. Some assume she was his mistress while some say she was just the Prince’s object of pleasure.’’

Esme’s lips parted.

’’She is mysterious, right?’’ He asked, noticing the expression on her face, ’’We live in a much simpler world compared to humans. They are complicated.’’

’’Everyone died or disappeared, what about the woman who lived with the Prince?" Esme did not respond to his words and instead asked the question revolving in her mind.

After all, could she tell him that she did not agree? He might live in a simple world compared to humans but her world was complicated in more than one way.
