Chapter 174: An extraordinary woman

Marilyn weakly stood up from the old bed, her lips parted as she sang a song, running her finger on the edge of the dagger.

Blood droplets landed on the ground.

As her velvety voice reverberated in the prison cell, the guards outside fell into a state of deep slumber.

She glanced at the full moon.

Today, her son would be visiting her.

Marilyn stopped singing.

The blood droplets started sparkling as they formed a star-shaped altar.

She stepped inside it and brought the knife closer to her wrist.

She had to find the mystery behind this child.

How did he survive? Even if he did, how could he torment her through her own spell?

It should have tormented him to some extent but why was she in so much pain?

Marilyn closed her eyes and whispered the chants.

The dagger in her hand started flying in the air before it approached her wrist.

The tip of the dagger pierced through her skin and blood oozed out of it.

Soon, the strokes made by the dagger turned black.

Drop by drop, the place was filled with blood but Marilyn did not flinch, her closed eyes were focusing on the visions that her spell provided her.

As the dagger drew the last stroke, Marilyn’s eyes snapped open.

Vicious eyes that were filled with hatred and endless resentment.

’Aleister Daven!’

The boy she killed back then was not the one she had wanted to kill.

She had sensed Adeline back then because it was her room but all along she got the wrong prey.

What angered her the most was the golden flash she saw before she opened her eyes.

The child... he was born with pure divine power which he inherited from his father.

But her son, his powers were not pure. He had inherited her black magic which the court members frowned on.

If he was born with only divine powers or only black magic, then he could have unleashed his powers to their full potential but with mixed powers, he was bound to face obstacles.

’Once again, what’s supposed to be mine became hers. The powers that should have belonged to my son ended up with her son.’

That day when her son, Cardan came, he panicked to see his mother standing in blood.

The 7-year-old’s eyes were full of tears as he looked at her and she talked to him about the life she has lived, the injustice she has survived, and the worthlessness she has felt.

There were times when he asked her about the room where his father spent most of his time alone.

And this was the night when she told him that that room belonged to his father’s lover.

She told him about the heartbreaks she had suffered.

And there she sat quietly, looking at a glimpse of what looked like... hatred in the child’s eyes.

When he left, Marilyn raised her hand and wiped her tears.

A seed of hatred will last for decades. For longer.

Slowly, eventually, she will shift all the hate buried in her heart to her son’s.

Soon enough, the revenge that she had left unfinished will be finished by him.

And as Cardan grew up, she was more and more satisfied looking at the glimpses of her in him.

He swore that he will kill.

He swore that he will be powerful.

She was pleased but at the same time, she was disappointed when his powers became a hindrance to him at times.

She kept doing her witchcraft, kept waiting for the stars to be aligned, and kept waiting for the right time.

And eventually, the right time came.

’A woman. All you need is a woman to purify your powers,’ she told her son, ’That woman will suck all the black magic in your in months.’

’What kind of woman?’ Cardan was not naïve or simple-minded. He was just as dark as her and it pleased her every single time.

’Not an ordinary one. A mermaid. A human who is also a part of sea creatures,’ As she spoke about it, what happened centuries ago danced in front of her eyes. Wasn’t she the reason why sea creatures originated?

Zephyr. Zephyr! That unruly man who suggested her husband to go to another woman. The God of Sea who was reduced to being a sea creature because of her devious plots.

’A mermaid?’ Her son asked.

’A woman who will entice you. She won’t be any ordinary mermaid. There will be something in her that will pull you...’ Marilyn stopped the divination when she lost control over her powers.

It astonished her how she could not look more into that woman.

It did not happen when she looked into Aleister despite him having divine powers.

But this woman... what kind of existence was she?

Cardan grew up to be a man who drowned in wine and women. Arrogant, vicious, and manipulative... he became just the person his mother raised him as.

He was waiting for the day when he could avenge his mother.

He prepared a beautiful pond in his room.

The pond for his prey.

At the night, he will keep her in bed, and by the day, she will stay in the pool. That’s what he thought.

Every night, he would look at the golden glow on his fingertip which had a black wisp around it and the determination in his heart continued growing stronger.

Marilyn was pleased.

And eventually, the day she was waiting for arrived.

The father and son had a brawl.

They fought countless times in the past years and they battled when Cardan invited his father for a duel.

But this time around, there was no duel.

Cardan destroyed the chamber which was his father’s favorite.

The place where the most dreaded God spent his evenings.

The chamber that once belonged to his lover. That once belonged to Adeline Daven.

And in doing so, he unleashed Atlas’s fury.

His face was distorted with rage and Marilyn who was looking at him from her mirror in the prison was stunned.
