Chapter 165: You are precious

’’Have some thoughts in your mind? We can discuss it over some nice tea. We used to do it before anyway.’’

Esme pushed herself to her feet and turned around, ’’Why are you here?" Her brows tugged together.

’’You don’t seem too pleased to see me,’’ Cardan remarked as he stepped towards her.

Esme did not say anything but a gasp escaped her mouth when a dagger slashed through her skin.

Blood dripped from her hand and Cardan grabbed her wrist, ’’Look at this,’’ he dropped the dagger in his hand and stroked her hand, taking the blood on his finger before he placed his finger inside his mouth, ’’Ah, so sweet and refreshing. Which part of you is not precious?’’

He looked at her with what looked like undisguised greed.

’’This part,’’ she stabbed his neck.

Cardan was stunned. His blue eyes turned towards the dagger pierced in his neck. It was the same dagger that he dropped earlier. He did not even realize when she picked it up because he was so lost in the taste of her blood, ’’No wonder.. No wonder he seems to be interested in you.’’

If the situations were not dire and she was not stuck with this deranged person alone then Esme would have found the leisure to roll her eyes at his words. Interested? Do you know I was just rejected by him?

’’My dear brother doesn’t seems to be the kind of person who would pay attention to women. I bet he knows how precious you are and that’s why he is keeping you close, by his side I mean,’’ Cardan said as he raised his hand, his fingers holding a few strands of her hair, ’’Look at this red color. Reminds me of how sweet your blood tasted just now.’’

’’Don’t touch me...’’ Esme swatted away his hand but she paused and suddenly something hit her like thunderstruck, ’’B-Brother what? I mean... whose brother? What did you say?!" she was having difficulty in putting the right words.

’’Oh, I forgot that you don’t know. That Prince of yours happens to be my detestable brother,’’ Cardan said it nonchalantly like he was just praising the weather.

But Esme tilted her head to the side. She glanced at the rose in her hand and blinked. Once. Twice. Aleister’s rejection was indeed like a slap but not a physical one so she doubted that it turned her deaf.

She had no hearing problems so she heard it right.

Brother... 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

’’You... Why would you stay in the Castle, disguised as a woman?" she turned to look at him, ’’Is it some kind of.... personal hobby?"

’’You are amusing,’’ Cardan threw his head back as he laughed, ’’I thought I’d see the shock on your face.’’

Of course, she was shocked but why would she show it on her face?

’’To play around with his life before ending it eventually,’’ he answered her initial question.

Esme did not need any sort of sorcery to understand that the ’he’ mentioned by him was none other than Aleister. To think that he thought he can kill him. She wanted to mock him but refrained from doing so.

At some point, she completely forgot that he slashed her hand with a dagger. But the pain became apparent and she remembered it when he looked at her hand, eyeing the blood greedily.

Esme glanced at the dagger stabbed in his neck. It was still there.

’’Oh, I forgot about it,’’ he held the dagger and pulled it out, blood gushed out of his fresh wound.

But then something unexpected happened. The wound started healing and soon the blood on his neck disappeared. Esme was startled.

’’Now you know how precious your blood is. I consumed a few drops and this happened. But this is only temporary,’’ Cardan stepped closer to her, ’’To tell you the truth, it’s not just about your blood. Your flesh, your bones, your fingers, your tears, your smile, every inch of you is so precious.’’

Esme stepped back from him. She was beyond disgusted. The way he eyed her was like she was a thing, a conquest.

’’What was I saying?" He lifted his chin and glanced at the sky as if was deep in thought, ’’Hmm, it was regarding my dear brother.’’

Esme did not want to accept the fact that he shared the same blood with Aleister. But she could not deny her instinct. Not when this man confessed it and she started noticing things. Small things like those ice-blue eyes, the spark of ruthlessness that she occasionally saw in Aleister but despite that, to her, they were worlds apart just based on the fact how one treated her so well and how the other looked down on her, like she was an object.

Humans might judge other humans by their kindness, nature, how they talked, how they acted, how they behaved, and more such philosophical things.

But when it came to her, she judged others by the way they treat her and the people close to her. Even if Cardan was kind to her, she’d have still hated him for all his schemes, for the way he kept manipulating things around Aleister and the whole Daven family.

’’Princess, why do you think he treats you so well?" Cardan raised an eyebrow, ’’Is it because he loves you?’’

’’What are you trying to insinuate?" she asked.

’’He is using you. Does he looks like a man who would pamper a woman to bits?’’ Cardan asked her, ’’Not just now. From the first day itself when you met him in your Kingdom, it was your scent, your aura that enthralled him just like it caught my attention.’’

’’How do you...’’ How did he know that she met him in her kingdom? And what was he talking about? The scent, aura... Esme stepped back from him.

’’Who do you think sent those assassins? Of course, I didn’t send them to kill him. Just to measure his strength,’’ Cardan sighed as he thought about that day, ’’But none of them made it alive. My informant told me that a little girl shielded him with her own body and he had no idea about what happened after that.’’
