Chapter 199: Protect Her

"Councilman Aldren. Please."

Kael watched the older wolf tried again to shake him off. Evan Aldren offered a stiff smile, pretending he simply wished to linger in the great hall, but Kael did not move. He matched the man’s steps easily, keeping close enough that Aldren could not slip away without being noticed.

After what they had learned the night before, none of them were willing to take chances.

Evan Aldren had killed his own children. To kill his own children and plot against his own mate, just to prevent a future child from becoming the Dark Master’s bride was absolutely abhorrent.

It made Evan Aldren as bad as the dark master who had taken thousands of lives, himself. If he wanted to the dark master to not have a bride, then he should have simply avoided making his mate pregnant! What gave him the right to torture her! The man was not fit to be an Elder and a councilman...

Kael’s gaze hardened as he walked alongside the man. The man was already looking for his Emira. He had reached the Pack hall where they all had their meals and been sitting there all morning.

Thankfully, they had almost expected that and told Ryn to make sure that Emira would not come here today... or anytime soon.

It didn’t matter that Emira had been the one who had deliberately brought him here by depicting her magic. Kael knew that she was planning a revenge. And he wouldn’t stand in the way of whatever it was that she planned. But he intended to keep Evan Aldren as close to him as possible until he had a better handle on this man. They were going to take turns to stick to the man and bring him down...

The only problem right now was simple. They had no idea what Emira herself planned to do.

Which meant the only thing they could do, at least for now, was keep Aldren far away from her.

Kael stepped forward again, blocking the man’s subtle attempt to walk down towards the forest," Councilman. You are an expert on Dark Magic. My brother and I recently brought back a pot of mud from a place that has a lot of black magic. He even took it to the Grand Witch but she doesn’t seem to know much. I wonder if you would be willing to take a look..."

Kael watched as the man’s jaw tightened before he slowly nodded. Kael gestured to him. Good. He would keep this man focus on them so that he would not be able to seek out Emira.

Kael led Evan Aldren through the narrow path toward Zen’s cabin, keeping his pace steady and unhurried, as if this were nothing more than a polite escort. But every sense in Kael’s body was sharpened, waiting for the smallest wrong move from the older wolf.

Zen stood near the doorway when they arrived, having clearly sensed them approaching. His grey eyes flicked to Aldren, then to Kael. A silent nod passed between them

But he didn’t even have the chance to speak because in that moment, Ryn came sprinting up the slope, her breath uneven, panic sharp in her scent. "Your Highness!

Kael turned instantly. "What happened?"

Ryn held her sides, chest heaving. "Emira. I can’t find Emira."

ael felt his entire body go still, as if someone had struck his spine with ice. Zen straightened too, eyes narrowing.

"What do you mean you can’t find her?" Zen demanded.

"She went out to the washroom. I thought she would return soon. But I waited and waited for fifteen minutes. She didn’t come out. And so I went inside to check. The place was empty. I’ve already checked everywhere after that. I just can’t find her!"

He exchanged a look with Zen and then both of them swung back toward Aldren.

"Please excuse us, Councilman Aldren," Kael said, forcing his voice steady. "We will be back soon."

Zen echoed him with a stiff nod, and before Aldren could respond, the two rushed off after Ryn.

Behind them, Evan Aldren stood alone at the cabin’s entrance.

He arched a brow.

Then shrugged.

"Well," he murmured under his breath, "if she is not here, she must be somewhere. But wasn’t their mate’s name Ramona? Then who is Emira?"

But then he shrugged. It was of no concern to him. Since Prince Kael had been sticking to him since morning, Aldren hadn’t had a chance to look for the person who had tricked him into coming here.

He needed to find that person and then ask them about his mate. Where was she?

Everyone believed that his mate had died all those years ago during childbirth, but he knew it was not the truth. She had escaped him.

As he strolled down the path, he wondered why she had made this person use dark magic to summon him. Didn’t she hate him for killing their children?

Lost in his thoughts, he was two steps away from fully entering the forest when a figure moved into his path.

The figure stood with the sun behind her, the light so sharp that councilman Aldren had to squint and yet it was impossible to see her face clearly.

"Were you thinking of me?" she asked in a gentle voice and Councilman Aldren stiffened. This voice... Could it be her? Didn’t she also always ask him when he returned home, if he had missed her...

His eyes narrowed and he took a few steps forward, intending to see her face a bit more clearly and make sure... And then he saw her. A gentle smile on her face. And a cold hatred in her eyes.

He went completely still.

"You..." His finger lifted, trembling just enough to betray him. "You."

Emira smiled as she walked forward and then bowed slowly," Daughter Emira greets father. I am sorry for staying away from you for so many years. It was wrong of me."
