Chapter 195: Emira’s Wolf

Emira lay on her bed, staring up at the ceiling. Her eyes glistened with tears, tears that carried both sadness and a strange sense of triumph. It was a heavy mix, one she had grown used to. She’d been a fool to have become distracted by the princes but it was a good thing that the truth had woken her up. Or she would have missed this golden opportunity.

Just now, before she had moved into this new house arranged for her, Ryn had come running to her looking so worried that one would have thought something untoward had happened.. She’d asked if Emira had made a mistake in the personal messages written on the invitations. Emira had simply shaken her head, saying quietly that she hadn’t. Ryn had let out a sigh of relief then and told her that Councilman Aldren had personally asked about those messages, curious and unsettled by them.

At that time, Emira had only shrugged. She had acted as if it didn’t matter, as if she hadn’t thought about it twice. Ryn, seeing her calm reaction, had also brushed it off and not questioned her further. But deep inside, Emira had been more than satisfied.

Because this was exactly what she wanted.

Her plan had worked. The message had reached the right person. And now, the man she’d been waiting for and the one she had thought would be the most difficult to get to, the one who had disappeared into the deep forests, far away from the politics of their world had finally been drawn out.

It was not yet time for her final move, but it was close. The first step had succeeded.

As she closed her eyes, a faint smile tugged at her lips as she asked," Did you recognise your mate’s magic, Councilman Aldren? Your timing is quite good, though... Come looking for your own doom."

Emira let her tears fall as she thought back to when she had written those messages. She had deliberately woven the trace of dark magic into the script, subtle but unmistakable to him. She knew the man would sense it, would recognise the touch of power that once belonged to his mate.

She just hadn’t expected him to take the bait so easily.

He should have hesitated, at least a little. But this... this was acceptable too. He must be confident, certain that he could rid himself of her just as he had done with her mother. Evan Aldren had always been ruthless—not only to his mate, but to his own children. So what, Emira wondered, would he think of someone like her? A nobody like her was probably easiest for him to kill.

The thought made her chest tighten, but it also fueled her resolve. It would soon be time. Time to avenge her mother, and her twin sister. Time to honor her older sisters, who had never been allowed to live, their lives snatched away the moment they were born... all on their father’s cruel orders.

It was amidst these dark, swirling thoughts that Emira finally drifted into a troubled sleep, unaware of the presence that had quietly entered the little house.

A large black wolf padded silently across the floor, its movements deliberate and regal. Then, Emira’s eyes opened, but the presence behind them was different. A curious pair of eyes watched the wolf narrow and alert, before a low, respectful voice broke the silence.

"Your Majesty... You summoned me?"

"I did. Can you tell me about Emira’s motives? Why did she summon Councilman Aldren here?"

The wolf stared curiously at the wolf before blinking," Your Majesty. You are cheating."

"How am I cheating?"

"You want to know about Emira’s secrets from me. If that is not cheating then what is?"

"I am just curious. Since I should not ask you about Emira, why not tell me about yourself? Why can you not shift? Our conversation was interrupted last time..."

He prowled closer to the prone Emira on the bed. Normally, she would have recoiled, startled by his presence. But instead, she only shifted slightly as he leaned down, pressing his head gently against her, as if coaxing her. The simple contact made her relax just enough to feel the warmth and weight of him beside her and she hugged him close.

"Your majesty. You are so warm. Actually, she can shift only when she fulfills her revenge. So, it should not be long since I will be able to come out. Your Majesty. Will you run out to play with me?"

The large black wolf nodded its head, its own eyes closing in contentment over the nearness of his mate, only for Lance to growl in his head to keep questioning her. "Her revenge for her mother?"

"Hmm. For her mother and her older sister and for my other human also."

Lance stilled. "Your other human?"

"Hmm. The one I was going to be born with... Emira’s twin sister. I’ve told you, that I was supposed to be born with her but I was not and instead was later tied forcefully to Emira."

Lance nodded. "So, this other human was?"

"Emira’s twin." The wolf spoke slowly before murmuring," Our mother was a witch and father a werewolf. After losing a few children to still birth, our mother obtained a blessing. Since a wolf and witch could not be born in the same body, she asked for twins. But then, she learned that her children did not die due to this, but they were ordered to be killed by father. Because of the prophecy?"

Lance stilled." The prophecy? About Emira being the Dark Master’s bride?"

"Yes. The thing is, it was never Emira who was supposed to be the dark master’s bride. It was supposed to be a child born to our mother. But when father learned of this, he decided to not take a risk. Every child that his mate bore was killed and our mother was told that the child was still born. Until she conceived us. That is when she learned what her mate had done. So, she did something to protect us..."

Lance stilled. What did she do???
