Chapter 179: The Wolf Souls

"Greetings to the Supreme Alpha."

Lancelot Stormhold looked down at the multitude of wolf souls stepping away from the human bodies inside the cave as the humans breathed their last.

Their varied-coloured fur glimmered in the faint light as one by one, they bowed their heads to him, and he acknowledged them with a slow nod.

A voice rose from among them, heavy with strain. "Why do you separate us from our humans? This is not correct."

The large black wolf blinked as it looked down at the others and spoke calmly, "You are the souls who have walked these lands since the beginning. You have reincarnated again and again, choosing the humans you would forever share existence with. But your fate has been tampered with by those seeking their own selfish desires. Tell me who has done this."

A silence followed his words followed by a loud rumble as the wolves released painful howls, their souls trembling with memory of the torture they had suffered in this reincarnation.

The small red wolf at the front stepped forward and lowered his head. "Supreme Alpha... you know we have been tortured. Why not let us go and drink from the River of Forgetfulness so that we can move on? Separating us from those humans is against the rules of reincarnation and rebirth."

Lance studied him before asking him slowly, "Even though he has tortured your human side again and again, you are still unwilling to name him?"

The energy around Lance shifted. It grew heavier, darker. The air seemed to ripple with it, pressing down like a storm about to break. Although the large wolf remained still and seemingly in control, something dangerous pulsed beneath his fur.

The other wolves immediately bowed lower, throats bared, ears pinned flat in submission as none dared to speak... until another one stepped forward.

"Supreme Alpha. It is not that we refuse to speak. We are bound not to speak about him specifically."

Lancelot looked down into the wise eyes of the grey wolf and nodded his head. They were not allowed to speak of the person but he was free to ask other things.

"Please hurry, Supreme Alpha. Our humans are fading away, we cannot stay much longer." The grey wolf urged and Lancelot asked directly," Tell me about the curses."

The grey wolf nodded and was about to tell him when the Red Wolf interrupted," This is not right. This is against the..."

"It is not." The Grey wolf snapped. "It is also our duty to guide our descendants and to protect them from the tricksters that have caused us so much pain."

"They have to discover it on their own." The red wolf cut in but the Grey wolf shook its head," And they will. I am only giving them a history lesson.. A history of us that has been tampered with by those witches!"

"Lie! You are doing it for revenge. And I don’t agree with that." The Red wolf growled.

"Fine! Then you don’t say anything! I will take that as my deed and accept the punishment for it in later life."As the grey wolf said those words, he walked forward and bowed," Your Majesty. We are soon fading away. Before I tell you what you wish to know, you must give me a promise."

Lancelot did not give a promise. He was not giving anything until he knew what it was the wolves wanted. However, the grey wolf wasted no time," Your Majesty. You have heard of the Ruins. It is towards the Moonville Pack, far away from here. It is also where thousands of Omegas have lost their life to the Dark Witches. Those Omegas were our fated mates, taken away from us before we could be together in this life."

"You must promise us that when you capture the Master, you will free their souls so that they can join us together in the afterlife."

"Why did they take your Omegas?" Lancelot asked slowly. He already knew that Omegas had been sacrificed at the Ruins. It was why they had been more vigilant since Emira’s return. But he did not know the reason for it.

The grey wolf stiffened at the words and then let out a small whimper, as if reliving the pain. "Your Majesty. Promise me first."

"I promise. When I catch the Master, I will release the souls to return to afterlife..."

The grey wolf nodded and even the red one seemed to have lost its earlier hostility. "Then listen carefully. The Ruins require the sacrifice of 1000 omegas to gain the ultimate power."

As he said this, most of the wolves stiffened. Lancelot knew then that all these wolves had lost their mates.

The grey wolf continued, "Only one more sacrifice remains. One final life. When that sacrifice is completed, the Dark Master will rise again in full strength. Undefeatable."

Lancelot’s eyes narrowed even as he had a sinking suspicion "Who is the final sacrifice?"

The grey wolf hesitated. His gaze flickered briefly toward the shadows of the cave, where the fading human bodies lay still. "He intends to take the mate of the Alpha Triplets," he said softly. "The mate is the final key."

A low growl rumbled from Lancelot, quiet but deep enough to shake dust loose from the cave walls.

The red wolf stepped forward then, as if he too had made up his mind to reveal what he could, "Supreme Alpha. If the Master succeeds, then all the others will fall. Every pack. Every witch. Every lineage connected to us. Even the souls trapped by him will fade into nothingness. We will not have an afterlife. We will not be reborn again. It will be the end."

The cave seemed to dim as their words settled.

The grey wolf added, "He has no physical body now. Yet he is strong enough to use other bodies as a vessel. He sees through them. He speaks through them. He acts through them. That is why none of us have been able to name him. He is everywhere and nowhere."

Lancelot stiffened as he watched the wolves start to fade away in that moment. "What about the curses...

The grey wolf took a step back, his form beginning to blur slightly, like mist thinning under wind. "We do not have much time left. Our humans are nearly gone. Soon we will fade. Regarding the curses. The Grand White witch is a..."

Before the grey wolf could complete his sentence, it faded into nothingness, followed by the others, never getting a chance to say that the Grand White witch was the biggest follower of the Dark Master. That she was the one who had muddied the history by spreading fake stories about the curses on the Triplets and the stories of having two mates. They wanted to warn the Supreme Alpha to be careful of her. But they had already faded away into nothingness...

Once the wolf spirits had disappeared, Lancelot returned to his human form and the three men exchanged a look. Not a word was spoken between them but they had already understood what needed to be done next. Lance nodded at Zen, who acknowledged the command and stepped out of the cave, followed by Kael who also said nothing.

It was only Lance left in the dark cave when he closed his eyes and succumbed to exhaustion from what they had just discovered. The wolves had left much unsaid. But what they had told them, had already answered many questions that they had.
