Chapter 176: A Wolf

Cassian clenched his hands as he noticed the large wolf in front of him. Having lived all his life as neighbours, he knew this one quite well.

A deep growl rolled through the clearing, low and resonant enough to make the ground tremble and Cassian froze for a moment as hundreds of excuses ran through his head, until the master spoke in his head, "He’s here to save you too. Your plan has not been discovered yet. You still have a chance."

Hearing this, Cassian released a sigh of relief and stared at the wolf, slowly walking back towards the boundary that divided the packs. He just needed to pull her onto their side...

Meanwhile, Emira stood frozen, staring at the large wolf. This wolf was as large as Lance’s wolf but she was sure that this was not Lance. So, was the wolf... Prince Kael? It had to be? She hurriedly glanced at the rogues who somehow seemed to have frozen mid growl at the appearance of this wolf... as if he had stopped time itself.

And then... the wolf turned its massive frame so that it was standing next to Emira with the rogues on one side and Alpha Cassian on the other.

Emira couldn’t take her eyes off the grey black wolf. Who was this... Could it be Kael? Since they were identical, it was a chance that the wolves were identical too...

Even as she had these thoughts, the wolf’s form blurred, folding inwards with a faint shimmer of light.

Zen.

Emira felt her breath catch. He was back! She was about to run to him when a growl caught her attention, reminding her that they were in the middle of a rather tensed situation...

Ignoring the rogue wolves Zen turned his head towards Alpha Cassian and said smoothly, "Why are you trying to abduct my little fire, Cassian, hmm?"

Emire frowned at the sudden words and sent Zena look but it was Cassian who replied," I was not tryingto abduct her. I was protecting her. We were trying to escape the rogues..."

Zen took a step forward, unhurried, brushing the dust off his hands as if he’d merely stepped out of a tedious meeting. "You always did have a problem, didn’t you? I can protect what is mine. Tsk tsk. Always coveting what belongs to me. Though I can’t blame you. She is quite something."

Zen watched as Cassian’s face darkened at the words and his eyes narrowed. But instead of replying to the taunt, Cassian called out," Watch out!"

Zen’s brows arched slightly, amusement still curling his lips as he turned his head. But before another word could leave his mouth, a massive rogue wolf launched itself out of the darkness, fangs bared, its claws slicing through the air toward his throat.

The sudden movement seemed to shatter the stillness as the other rogues quickly started to move.. Emira gasped, stumbling back a step and almost falling into the Redwood territory behind her. The air erupted with snarls and the heavy thud of paws hitting the ground.

Zen reacted in a blur. His body twisted, one hand flashing upward to meet the attacking wolf mid-air. The impact was explosive as claws met flesh, and Zen’s fist connected squarely with the wolf’s chest.

There was a sharp crack as the beast was thrown back several feet, crashing through a cluster of branches before landing heavily with a whimper.

Emira watched wide eyed as Zen didn’t even look to see if it rose again. And instead turned his eyes on another wolf approaching him...His grey eyes, dangerous and cold.

But while Emira’s eyes were on Zen, Cassian’s eyes were not on him. They were fixed on Emira. She absently heard a commanding voice telling her to come to him and she frowned and turned slowly to look at the man. Was he calling her? It sounded like Alpha Cassian’s voice but somehow deeper.

As she stared, she heard him say again, "Emira. Come to me."

The tone of it was different and even before she could think things through, her body stiffened as that pull wrapped around her, whispering in her head that it was safer to go to Cassian a few more steps... that she should just take one step forward.

Emira blinked, disoriented. Her foot shifted forward involuntarily. She didn’t understand why it happened but she wanted to go there, until Zen’s head snapped toward her and he barked, "Don’t move."

The command tore through her like lightning. Her muscles locked instantly, breath catching in her throat, her leg hovering mid air...

In the next minute, the haze in her mind cracked and fell apart, and she looked around. What had she been about to do?

By now, Zen had already turned back and already turned back into his wolf form. She watched as Zen’s massive form moved striking the wolves aside as if they were toys. When he turned, the ground tore beneath his claws.

The first rogue lunged for his flank, trying to catch him off-guard. Zen twisted mid-motion, jaws snapping around the attacker’s neck. A flash of blood, a muffled whimper and then silence. Another came from behind; Zen’s tail lashed once, hitting the wolf square across the muzzle with enough force to send it sprawling. The sound of cracking bone split the night while Emira could only watch as the wolves attacked one after another and sometimes together...

He seemed to not even need to see where the attackers were as leapt again, landing atop two wolves at once, his weight crushing one while his claws sank deep into the other’s shoulder.

She had seen the man fight in his human form when practicing but his wolf was even more powerful somehow... Within a few minutes, he had already handled more than ten wolves attacking him, leaving only a few to run away with their tails tucked...

Just as she was about to walk to him, however, she felt someone hold her wrist. She frowned and turned around to look at Cassian Redwood who looked almost crazy.
