Chapter 175: Crossover

Cassian felt a shiver of excitement as he glimpsed the line of the Redwood Border ahead and the voice in his head hummed with approval. They were almost there. He could almost see the shimmering magic that he’d surrounded the pack borders with, anticipating the arrival of....

"Almost there. Good work, Cassian. You are keeping your promise," a voice in his head echoed.

He felt the words move through his mind like smoke, curling around his thoughts until he couldn’t stop his grin. His master was praising him... and he eagerly asked the voice in his head, "Master, then will you reward me? I want to become master’s most favoured servant."

The voice in his head laughed at that and said, "Once she crosses, she will never be able to leave. The border will hold her. You have done well, Cassian. You deserve to be rewarded. Come on, increase your speed. Bring her to me soon."

Cassian breathed in deeply and tightened his hold on Emira’s arm and increased their speed of running, when he felt her lag slightly behind.

Emira felt the grip on her tighten as Alpha Cassian increased their speed but she couldn’t keep up as the hem of her dress caught on a low branch, causing her to stumble and fall...

He tried to drag her along impatiently, but she pulled hard at her hand, making the man leave her wrist from his grasp as she bowed her head and tried to catch her breath.

"Emira! Now is not the time to stop. Come on... We are nearly there."

Emira shook her head, and tried to say something when an angry howl split through the woods, causing her to turn around in alarm.

Emira’s eyes widened at the sound and she turned back. Even though she had never seen or heard Kael in wolf form, she had a feeling this was Kael... "That was—"

"Keep running. The rogues are probably angry that they have been caught. They will definitely try to escape using the forest. Come on, Emira!" Cassian said quickly, his voice sharper than before. His hand gripped her arm once more, this time even more tightly than before, "The safe house is close."

But Emira’s instincts made her stop and she protested, refusing to move even as she was pulled to stand... Something inside told her that she needed to go back to the lake..

"No," she said, shaking her head, her breath still uneven. "I need to go back."

She saw him frown as he continued to tug at her, "Now is not the time. The safe house is only a few meters ahead. You’ll be safe there."

But she shook her head again, "You don’t understand. That call-he’s summoning me back. Something’s wrong." She tried to pull her arm free again, but he didn’t let go.

"Emira." His voice dropped and Emira felt her unease rising full force as his voice seemed to take on an edge as he warned her. "We don’t have time for this. Come with me now Emira."

She blinked, startled, as her feet made to move... There was somethin hynotic about the voice, forcing her to obey. She tried to shake her head and speak, question him but just then he pulled her into his arms so that his chest was hugging her back and he started to step backwards.

"What are you doing?" Emira asked but she already had her answer in front of her... making her freeze.

A low and guttural growl echoed from the shadows, as a wolf stepped out of the bushes. Then another, closer this time. Emira froze as pairs of eyes began to appear in the dim light as dozens of them, came to surround them from three sides...

He stepped closer to her, as though to protect her, but the faint curve of his mouth betrayed something else. He wasn’t afraid. He was pleased.

Inside his head, his master’s voice purred again, louder now. Yes. They’ve come at the right time to drive her forward. Let them press you both in. A few more steps, Cassian. One more step and she is ours.

He nodded faintly, almost to himself. He could already feel the energy of his land pulsing stronger. It was calling to him, urging him on. Just a few more feet. He tightened his hold on her and pulled her backward.

Emira struggled slightly, trying to twist free, but he didn’t let her go. The rogues were moving closer, and Cassian smiled and whispered," We are surrounded on three sides, but there are no rogues on our packlands... Let’s go...."

As he said this, he pulled her sharply, and as his foot touched the border, the air shifted. It was as if the forest itself had inhaled. The faint shimmer that marked the Redwood lands seemed to ripple like water disturbed by a stone.

He smiled.

The voice in his head was laughing softly now, words pouring through him like smoke. You did well. Bring her through. Let her feel it. Once she crosses, she will not escape. Not even the Supreme Alpha can call her back. Just as Emira’s stepped on the border, however, another loud howl broke through the silence.

And then, before she could take another step, everything blurred.

Something moved between them so fast that the air cracked and in the next minute, Cassian was thrown a few feet into the air before he landed on his bu** on his side of the border while Emira was pulled forward, back into the Stormhold Pack.

Cassian groaned at the fall as pain shot up his arm but in a panic, he straightened up hurriedly, and was ready to race back to pull Emira up. What had happened, he didn’t know but in his head, he could already hear his master’s voice screaming at him to not let her go.

However, before he could step back onto the Stormhold territory, he was faced with an enormous wolf that had him take half a step back.
