Chapter 197: 197: Day 3 of 5

Miles sat beside Medic Renn as they stared up at the panel. They watched as the computer was finishing up on the last few chemicals to neutralize the toxin. None of the chemicals in the database was able to act as a neutralizer for the toxin so far, and there were only a handful left to go.

Once the computer finished, it would immediately start on repellents using the same method. Unfortunately, it would take two days to test all the combinations in the database. Both Miles and Medic Renn were fearful that it would be too late to save Ver. She was determined to try to save them herself.

Miles looked over at Ver. She was playing with the infants. She was sitting on a blanket with the two boys as she played with them. They were laughing and giggling. Miles smiled. She would make a good mother if she were given the chance. He wanted to find a cure for the humans in stasis so he could give her that chance.

Fleet Commander Lerian and Council Leader Vorik stood in front of the Archives on the mother ship. They had been at it since yesterday, trying to find something that would help Ver.

"It looks like the key to saving her is the boy. I don’t know who he is, and the files don’t say anything about his identity," Vorik complained. "I’ve never seen anyone other than Ver with white eyes."

"I’ve asked around the fleet for the boy’s identity. He’s not that old, maybe twenty-two. No one knows of anyone with white eyes," Fleet Commander Lerian told Vorik. He was frustrated. He couldn’t figure out why he couldn’t find one Ramesian with white eyes. They would stand out. No one knew anything. It was like the boy didn’t exist.

"Is there anything in the files that can at least tell Ver what to do to save those in stasis? Something, anything that will help her survive whatever process she needs to do to save them?" Vorik asked. His tone was tight. He was stressed. They were in a race against time.

Fleet Commander Lerian shook his head slowly. "There is nothing. The files don’t show how the healers heal, why the healers do whatever their process is, and even who the healers are or any information about those the files speak of. It’s too vague. All it says is that this woman taught her son everything she knows. She never told anyone other than her son how she healed. She only taught him because he could heal, too. It was something that was passed down in her family."

Council Leader Vorik started pacing the archive room. He stopped suddenly. "We need to scour the fleet and the domes to find this boy. We need to find him. In two days, she’s going to try to heal those in stasis, and the chances of her survival are minimal. She doesn’t care. She only knows she can save them, and she wants to try. We need to find the boy so he can at least tell her what to do to save her from inadvertently killing herself.

Fleet Commander Lerian nodded. "I’ll start on the fleet; you can start in the domes. Whoever finishes first will help the other. We’re running out of time, so we need to move quickly."

Council Leader Vorik nodded, rushing out of the archive room to have his pilots take him back to the surface. When he stepped in, he first ordered them to take him back to the dome. As they flew into open space, he asked if they had seen any males with white eyes or if they knew of any males with white eyes.

Neither of the pilots admitted to knowing of any males with white eyes, but they did admit to knowing of Ver, though not of anyone else.

Guard Commander Drevick, Gate Commander Seeran, Orik, and Trei sat beside their mates, watching them lie stiffly in their beds in stasis. A sheen of green mist surrounds them as they remain in suspended animation, waiting for a cure to wake them up.

Council Leader Vorik had told them that in five days, if there wasn’t a cure found, Ver was going to sneak in and attempt to heal them herself. There was nearly no chance of her survival. They needed to find a cure fast before she tried.

They knew that if she tried, it was going to kill her. They didn’t like hearing that.

Looking over at Miles and Medic Renn, they saw them working with the computer. It had bio threads lit up side by side on the screen with information to the side that appeared to be changing each time one of the bio threads flashed red and was replaced with a new one in green. They knew they were running tests, trying to find a way to remove the toxin safely. They also knew that they weren’t finding anything. Nothing was working.

Orik stood up and walked to the two men working at the computer. "Is there anything I can do to help?" he asked. His eyes scanned the panel. Another bio thread flashed red and then was replaced by a new green one.

Medic Renn looked over at Orik. "I’m open to ideas. We’ve gone through all the chemicals in the database to find something to neutralize the toxin, but there wasn’t one. Now we’re looking for one that can repel the toxin, so if it’s siphoned, it won’t bind to the tissue. So far, there isn’t one of those, either. The computer is still going through the database, though. There still is a chance. We need ideas in case there isn’t a repellent for the toxin. We’re running out of time, so we’re open to suggestions," Renn told him. "Any suggestions. Any suggestions at all?"

Orik nodded. "I will see if any of us can think of something while we wait. It will give us something to keep our minds off our mates. I’ll let you know if we come up with anything that might help remove the toxin safely."

Medic Renn nodded. "That would be helpful. We are running out of ideas to try." Medic Renn’s eyes went to Ver briefly. "We’re also running out of time."

Orik walked back to the others, who were waiting beside their mates. "They are open to ideas. They have tried to find a neutralizer; now they’re looking for a repellent. So far, they can’t find anything to take the toxin out safely. Medic Renn and Miles want ideas to try. I think they’re getting desperate."

Putting their heads together, they started whispering about ways to remove the toxin. Ver stayed on the blanket, scanning the room. She knew everyone was trying to find a cure. In her heart, she knew there wasn’t one.

It was the end of the third day. Mikiel and Verion sat in the tavern, eating pizza and drinking strong beverages.

Mikiel was oblivious to Verion’s thoughts. He scanned the room, taking in the atmosphere. Mikiel loved coming to the tavern on this side of the dome. He liked just being there because of the atmosphere. It was friendly and cozy.

Verion sat in his seat, looking around the tavern. Mikiel realized that Verion looked anxious.

"Are you doing okay, Verion?" Mikiel asked, watching Verion scan the tavern.

Verion looked over at Mikiel. "I was just looking for that couple. Ver and Miles, you told me about. You said Ver was going to try and save those humans. I don’t see her. Do you think she already tried?" he asked, worried.

"This is only the end of the third day. She’s going to try at the end of the fifth day. She’s probably in her dwelling with her mate," Mikiel told him. "They don’t come here every night as we do."

"How can we help her survive? I think that what she’s planning on doing is too dangerous. I don’t think she’s going to save anyone. She’s going to die for nothing," Verion complained. He didn’t know why he was so worried about Ver. He figured it was because of the torment she went through for being different. He knew what it felt like. His stutter got him tormented frequently. That torment made his stutter even worse. He wanted to help her. He knew she didn’t deserve to die for nothing. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Mikiel looked over at Verion. "I know you feel for her. I don’t know what to do to help her. Everyone is fighting to find a cure before she has a chance to try saving them. Fleet Commander Lerian is scouring the fleet for information. Council Leader Vorik is scouring the domes. The medics are trying to find a cure. There is a lot of help trying to prevent her from trying something she doesn’t even know how to do."

Verion couldn’t help but smile. "I’m glad there are so many trying to help her. I just wish I knew where to go to help her."

The rest of the evening, Mikiel and Verion ate their pizza in silence. Verion couldn’t help but scan the tavern for Ver. He was worried she would try early, and he wouldn’t get the chance to help her.

Miles wrapped his arms around Ver, holding her close. "Tomorrow is day four. We haven’t even figured out what to do to help you stay safe. You even said you didn’t know what to do to save them."

Ver returned the gesture, wrapping her own arms around her mate. They held each other in silence, taking in the other’s touch. When she finally pulled away, she looked at Miles. "I think my instincts will take over. I will know when it’s time. I know I will. I have to believe that I will."

Miles sighed. "But what if you don’t. I don’t want to lose you. I want to find a way to ensure your safety while you try saving them."

"We have two more days. I’ll think of something," she told him pleadingly.

"No, Ver, We. We will think of something," he responded. "Don’t leave me out of this. This concerns me, too."
