Dungeon Raider System-Chapter 628: Polterwhat
The first thing Lister did after arriving at his office was to investigate about the Roman empire. Everyone knew what mercenaries were since they existed in almost every historic period of humanity, but Lister didn't think Uriel was being pedantic or redundant when he mentioned the Roman empire.
He didn't know the reason why the sound of Uriel's voice kept lingering inside his head, but it somehow felt like a veiled threat.
"There it is, let's see..." Lister fumbled to himself as he skimmed through the website.
"Can I be of assistance, Mister governor?" Halstead asked after pouring a cup of coffee for Lister who remained silent until his eyes widened.
"This bastard... he's good." Lister nodded to himself.
"If you say so, Sir." The bearded secretary shrugged.
"It says here that the Roman empire had no match in politics, science, technology and military in its time. They were more advanced than the rest of the world during their reign, but that all came to an end not from any outside threats, but from the inside.
They hired barbarian mercenaries to protect them from other barbarian tribes until those defending the walls and those besieging were the same people." Lister chuckled.
"I don't see why is it funny." Halstead took a close look at Lister who was acting in a very strange way. He was laughing, but he could tell he wasn't in a good mood.
"That's because this is no joke. Call the detectives, the army, the Cryptid hunting agency and any private corporation willing to send hunters to help. Tell them to be ready to deploy their hunters as soon as they see a flare up in the sky." Lister commanded.
"Are we under attack!?" Halstead asked at the same time he took his cellphone out.
"Not yet." Lister broke into a maniacal laughter in a way that didn't fit his youthful appearance.
By mentioning the Roman empire Uriel had managed to reassure Lister and worry him at the same time. It wasn't a threat so much as a warning letting him know that he was ready to offer his services, but if he relied too much on their company his existence as a governor would be as necessary as that of a roman emperor's existence was necessary to barbarians.
To prevent that scenario, Lister needed to step up his game and put his resources to good use. He didn't just need to dispatch hunters to avoid casualties, what he needed to do was something way more meaningful. Something that would forever change the course of humanity's history.
"Call the news channels, I'm giving a speech." Lister tippled his fingers on his desk while he pondered his next move.
"Few people bother watching the news nowadays. If you want to reach more people it should be better to use Allegro's influence to spread the message." Halstead rebuked while keeping an army official on hold.
"Trust me, from today onward they won't miss the news."
Inside the old condemned building, at the same time, the luminous figure Luna identified as a cryptid just finished breaking Uriel's neck and threw him on the side like trash. Three out of four hunters had been defeated and the only one who remained was the weakest of them all, a small huntress who barely reached the ascended level.
"A polterwhat!?" Nika asked trying to figure out if she was just hearing things. Not that it would surprise her since she was still under the effects of a hangover and had just received a blunt hit on the head that caused her to bleed.
"A poltergeist, it's the physical manifestation of energy." Luna raised her tone of voice as the luminous cryptid moved towards.
"How do we fight it?" Medusa, who after receiving a powerful hit was also unwittingly released by the cryptid, stood up with difficulty.
"Activate your batteries." Despite her calm voice, it was clear Luna was flustered as her hands trembled at the sight of the cryptid. Instead of the usual awe and wonder she displayed in front of cryptids, she was utterly afraid of the thing that managed to defeat her friends.
If it was strong enough to bring Nika down, then as soon as it reached her she was bound to be killed with but a snap of its fingers.
Medusa and Nika did as Luna asked them to and several arcs of electricity formed in the air waving in all directions instead of feeding the elctronic devices on the room. For a brief moment all the flying objects came to a stop mid air giving the appearance that it was finally over, but contrary to their expectations the cryptid grew stronger.
"It's not working!" Nika shouted when the entire building started quivering as if there was an earthquake.
"It is, follow the electricity." Luna too activated a tier 1 battery. As a result, the arcs of electricity slowly weaved a thin web. Although blind, Medusa could hear the crackling sound thought it might be an electromagnetic disturbance.
Empowered by the different energies flowing in the room, the luminous figure grew bigger and stronger. It's body was more defined and less blurry, but despite Luna's efforts and the cryptid's proximity she faild to identify any features on its head it turned out to be impossible due to how brightly it shone and how fast it moved towards her.
"Watch out!" Medusa tanked with her body the powerful fist of the cryptid that felt too solid to come from an ethereal creature. But this time she was expecting it and instead of being thrown away, she held her ground and then replied with a kick that went through its body which served to confirm her theory. "This is just electromagnetic noise! We need to find the source." freёweɓnovel.com
"We need another focus point to triangulate its location, Uriel!" Luna shouted Uriel's name unaware that his body lied limp on the ground. Nika gawked at the lifeless body, inwardly praying for Uriel to get up like always, but reality was different.
Contrary to most situations where Uriel was able to accelerate his healing during a fight, in this occasion Uriel was unable to land a hit on the ethereal creature. With no damage deal, he also didn't get any life essence and only managed to get his neck broken and only survived due to his spinal cord still being intact somehow. But that didn't mean everything was fine.
With several cervical bones cracked, all it would have taken Uriel to sever his spinal chord was to make a wrong movement. Luckily, thanks to Uriel taking Lamar's lectures it was a fact that had been engraved in his mind. Whenever a human, hunter or not, received that kind of injury it was of the utmost importance to immobilize the neck even if the victim didn't feel any pain.
It was difficult to remain calm enough not to mess up made even more difficult by the violent rattling inside the building, but Uriel managed to flick his finger softly enough to pop out the battery that remained in his pocket giving the electricity four focal points which allowed Luna to spot the epicenter of the electromagnetic disturbance.
"Over there!" Luna pointed her finger at the old stereo which was the convergence point of the electricity that came off from the four batteries. It took Nika less than a second to reach for the gun, unholstering it and firing the Colt peacemaker directly at the small wisp of light that was revealed only after it was overloaded with energy.
The projectile hitting the target was followed by a bright flash of light that burst out the windows and blinded the entire city for an instant, then everything turned quiet.
"Idiot, you're all idiots." Tears ran down Luna's face while she fought against her instinct to shapeshift into a werewolf since it would only make it more difficult for her to treat her friends.
"It's still alive!" Nika screamed when she heard the clear sound of a glass marble bouncing on the floor.
"It's the flux orb, you moron." Uriel would have glared at her if not for him being aware that turning his head around would have been suicide. Still, curiosity almost got the best of him as he wanted to know if all the trouble they went through was worth the effort. "What rank is it?"
"You won't believe this guys... it's a horror level flux orb! I killed a horror level cryptid!" She cheered after picking up the pristine flux orb that greatly differed both in size and quality to anything she ever held in her hands.
"Yes, good job." Luna said while she immobilized Uriel's neck by wrapping it with rags of clothes.
"Do you even know how big of a deal this is? Not even holy rank hunters can kill horrors and I'm just a heavenly rank!"
"That's great Nika." Medusa chuckled. It wasn't that Nika's feat wasn't extraordinary or that she thought any less of it because it was a joined effort, but it was hard being impressed by her just pulling the trigger.
Now that the battle was over and they obtained a brand new horror level flux orb, all they needed was to wait for Uriel to recover from his gruesome wound and to let the city know the job was over.
"Hey, Miss horror slayer, this would be a great time to shoot the flare." Uriel sneered from his flat position on the floor that reminded her as a pancake.
"Really guys?" Nika fumbled all the way to the window where she noticed that the lights started flickering and bright flashes of light appeared and disappeared out of thin air all over the city letting them know the battle was far from over.
