Dungeon Raider System-Chapter 627: Condemned Part 2
"That's it! Use the book and order the ghost to kill itself!" Nika said with both teary eyes and a frantic smile that gave the impression that she had gone insane.
"It doesn't work that way." Uriel shrugged.
"Also, those are not ghosts. They're souls, it's different." Luna said.
"I agree with Luna. We've witnessed the power of your book and we've seen the revenants, but neither of those things are ghosts. For all we know, it's just technology we can't understand yet.
Maybe they found out a way to store consciousness inside a hard drive or something like that." Medusa's reasoning was sound and it also fitted Uriel's theory that the so called 'magic' displayed by Bella was actually just ancient technology put to use by people who didn't understand its inner workings and only knew how to replicate its effects.
But that didn't stop him from being shocked by Medusa agreeing with Luna.
Although Uriel was skeptic of Luna's field of study and used to disregard it as nothing but pseudoscience, Luna's input had proved to be useful way too many times to be considered a coincidence. But Medusa was different.
To Medusa, anything that didn't follow the scientific method to the letter wasn't science which meant she didn't even consider archaeology as a science. Uriel was aware of this but didn't think much of it since he understood she didn't think less of social sciences.
Besides, she always trusted both Uriel's and Luna's theories, not because she thought they followed a strict scientific method but because they were her friends.
"Sure, someone made an artifact just to topple furniture over in an instant without making any noise just for shits and giggles!" Nika screamed uncaring of the implications of Medusa's theory or its implications.
"Look." Luna pushed her cellphone in front of Nika's face, its screen brightly lit.
"That's what worries me the most! Ghosts aren't cryptids, they're worse! They can go through walls, move stuff with their minds and kill people with a touch!" Nika shivered in fear.
"If you're so scared then why don't you wait inside my shadow?" Uriel sneered at the heavenly rank tantrum Nika was throwing.
"And be all by myself!? A gentleman would offer reassuring words and protect a scared lady!" Nika's words triggered Medusa who belly laughed at her frightened companion.
"I don't know what's funnier. Calling yourself a lady or expecting Uriel to be a gentleman." She made the gesture of wiping out a tear from her blindfold.
"Hey!" Both Uriel and Nika exclaimed in outrage. Neither of them actually considered themselves either a gentleman or a lady, but Medusa laughing at their expense didn't bode well with them. What came next was even worse as they noticed a small laughter accompanying that of medusa, it was more than a chuckle but less than a laughter.
It was an ominous cackle bellowed from the abyssal depths of a cruel beast.
"Kukuku, that was funny." Luna said in a monotone, prompting everyone to sigh in relief at the realization it was just Luna.
"Staying here is pointless, we should probably..." Uriel stopped speaking when he thought he heard foot steps coming from above, but as soon as he fell silent the noise stopped. "As I was saying, we should..." Once more he was cut short by the sound of a glass marble bouncing on the upper floor.
"Just finish your damn sentence!" Nika shouted.
"Interesting, the sounds are only keeping Uriel from speaking. I have a theory, Medusa, what do you think our next step should be?" Luna asked.
"I think..." Medusa attempted to speak and was also cut short, only this time it was the sound of scratching on the walls as if some rodent was gnawing their way out, though Luna knew there were no mice in the entire building as their pungent smell would have reached her. Medusa attempted to continue speaking, but Luna cut her off.
"That's enough. This confirms my theory, whatever we're facing is sentient and also... it's here." Luna muttered the last part, her always stony face added to her terrifying words caused Nika to drop on the ground.
"Please, stop." She cried as she passed both hands down her face with so much force she scratched her forehead and cheeks. At the same time, all the home appliances in the room started turning on and off. The sound of static coming off from an old stereo almost synchronized with the TV that also showed black and white dots.
"It's nothing, this just means there's no cryptid nearby and that this building is connected to the power grid of the city." Medusa explained, but only because she didn't see what everyone else did.
"Medusa, the TV is unplugged." Uriel said trying to keep calm, but the thought of a cryptid that could be so close without him noticing its presence made him fear for his life. He was aware that some cryptids could manipulate their Fields of disruption, but only if they remained idle or concealed their powers which wasn't the case.
"Why can't cryptids be cute lizards the size of a building!? Why do they always have to be so scary?" Nika pouted having a hard time to get a grip of herself which she fixed by slapping herself. "I'm ready."
Knowing that Luna already had a theory of what cryptid they were facing, Uriel assumed that in spites of the unexplained phenomena they just witnessed they were safe since she had yet to give them a warning or explain anything further, but his thoughts proved to be wrong when the furniture moved violently from one side to the room to the next.
It was so abrupt and unexpected that it caught Nika by surprise leaving her helpless against the fridge that fell on top of her. The same happened to Medusa who couldn't see the TV rack trapping her against the wall.
It was startling, but far from being scary since they were both heavenly rank hunters whose bodies were supposed to withstand intense pressure and huge impacts. Unfortunately to them, this didn't seem to be true as Nika's head was bleeding and Medusa started crying.
"Luna, what is going on?" Uriel asked while dodging a book that moved spontaneously towards him, followed by a dozen others that forced him to activate his Dash skill. Thanks to his enhanced perception of time Uriel soon realized there were far more objects hurled his way than he anticipated and despite his speed there was nothing he could do but crouch to reduce his exposure and brace for impact.
The first book that hit him broke through Uriel's defense and caused a pain that didn't match the projectile.
He had been close to books his entire life and his relationship with them allowed Uriel to know how much one would weight before even picking it up from the bookcase, but now he felt betrayed by those he considered his best childhood friends as they caused him an intense pain and left him bruised on the ground.
With Medusa gasping for air as the piece of furniture trapping her squeezed her against a wall that was should have cracked against the pressure and Nika unconscious on the ground, Uriel was starting to think they might be wiped out before understanding the nature of their enemy.
But that only lasted until he saw Luna's calm demeanor looking at the mass of objects swirling on top of her head like a flock of vultures about to dive down for a meal. As the mass of objects increased, they turned into a raging hurricane leaving Luna in the eye of the storm yet nothing touched her.
The situation seemed extreme when a burst of searing light made a sudden appearance in the corner of the room and Uriel felt relieved for a full second, until he realized it wasn't Luna's trait.
When the light dimmed down it revealed a humanoid figure too tall and slim to hold any resemblance to Luna and Uriel could do nothing but watch as the figure blasted Medusa to the other side of the room with nothing but a wave of its blurry hand.
"That's a fucking ghost if I ever saw one!" Uriel screamed trying to snap Luna out of her reverie, but had not clue if his words even reached her as she was completely covered by a mass of flying objects. Contrary to Luna's apparent disregard for his words, the luminous figure reacted by kneeling in front of Uriel and extending its hand towards to grasp his throat.
The touch of the hand froze him and burnt him at the same time, yet Uriel grinned as he now had the cryptid right where he wanted. He started the swing before even summoning the Red thread of fate and by the time the crimson blade appeared in Uriel's hand it was already halfway inside the creature and kept going further inside with the same ease as though it pierced through empty air.
"It's a poltergeist." Luna said in monotone at the same time Uriel's neck made a cracking sound.
