Chapter 84: Ice Cold

The two robed figures immediately leapt from their positions and sprinted forward.

At first, it looked like they were charging straight at Bob. He braced himself, ready to deflect their strikes again. But just as they closed the distance, both enemies suddenly vaulted high into the air, soaring over Bob’s head with ease.

Bob looked up, startled, as the two landed behind him and dashed straight toward me with blades in hand and eyes locked on their target.

So they were aiming to finish me first.

Come on!

I screamed internally, forcing myself to stay calm.

One of them suddenly hurled a kunai in my direction. It zipped through the air, fast. I instinctively raised my Arcane Barrier in front of me.

But before the kunai made contact, it exploded into a burst of gray smoke, engulfing me in a thick cloud.

I could not see a thing.

This is bad.

I spun around, eyes darting left and right, heart pounding. My hands tightened on my weapon.

They could come from any side.

Ping!

One of them struck the Arcane Barrier I had raised just in time.

Swoosh!

A sudden sting of pain shot through my right arm, I’d been cut.

"Tch... How can I fight what I can’t see?"

Then, through the swirling smoke, I spotted a silhouette, a figure growing larger as it rushed toward me.

There you are, you bastard!

I immediately lunged at the figure, weapon raised to strike. But just before my blade could land, the smoke thinned, and I saw the face.

A familiar, annoying face.

"Bob?! What the hell are you doing here?" freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

"Well, duh. I’m here to help you, obviously," Bob replied .

Swoosh!

The whistling sound of flying metal tore through the air.

Without hesitation, Bob shoved me aside and raised his [Embersteel Sword].

Ping!

He deflected the incoming kunai at the last second.

We stood back-to-back now, eyes scanning the smoke for movement, hearts pounding.

Any second now, the next strike would come.

Just as we steadied ourselves for the next attack, an eerie chill swept over us.

The temperature dropped sharply.

Then, the thick smoke that surrounded us was suddenly blown away by a blast of icy blue wind, clearing the battlefield in an instant.

The two robed figures froze, literally. Their positions were fully exposed. When they tried to leap away, they could not move. They looked down in alarm as their feet were frozen to the ground.

Seeing the opening, Bob and I did not hesitate.

"Dash Slash!" we shouted in unison.

In a blink, we closed the distance and slashed through them, stopping just behind as blood sprayed into the air.

I glanced down at my blade, now slick with red.

The guilt was still there, lingering.

But I reminded myself, I had to do what needed to be done.

"Grrr! Why is it so cold?" Bob muttered, shivering as he hugged his body tight.

Hearing him say that made me realize I was also shaking. Cold vapor was now visible with every breath I exhaled.

We quickly searched for the source of the chill, then we saw it.

Beltimore stood at the center of the chamber, closing his eyes ,his book was floating in front of him with the page flipped abruptly by itself, while surrounded by a gushing storm of icy wind radiating outward. Several frozen statues of enemies stood nearby, encased in solid ice.

Unlucky for them.

Now it made sense, why Beltimore wore that thick winter coat, even on sunny days.

He was an ice user.

That reminded me, I still had not checked the class cards we received when Beltimore and Alice joined the party. The notification had popped up, but I skipped it to read later.

---

[Beltimore has joined the party!]

[Class Card Obtained: Shardstorm Mage]

INT +50%, Cold Resistance added.

[Alice has joined the party!]

[Class Card Obtained: Light Herald]

INT +50%, Faith stat unlocked.

---

A total 100% increase in INT!?

No wonder that guy got sliced into three pieces by my Tempest Fang earlier. The stat bonuses must have amplified the skill’s power.

...Wait, what does the Faith stat do? Does it make me more religious? I mean, I believe in God, but I rarely pray. Does that make me an infidel?

We slowly approached Beltimore, still hugging ourselves from the cold, one hand always on our weapons. Above us, several robed figures still darted along the top of the cavern wall, less than ten now. But they were keeping their distance.

They had seen what Beltimore could do.

Beltimore slowly opened his eyes. Instantly, the icy wind died down. The floating book by his side dropped, but he caught it smoothly with his left hand. Then he raised his right hand toward the ceiling.

"Shardstorm Halo!" he declared.

Icy winds swirled and converged, forming a ring of crystalline ice shards around him. Each shard rotated in orbit, sharp at both ends.

Beltimore narrowed his eyes at the enemies above. Then, with a single motion, he extended his hand forward.

The shards responded.

They tilted, one by one until every single one was aimed at robed figures above. Each locked on its target like a guided missile.

"Go," Beltimore muttered coldly.

The shards shot forward with a screeching sound, too fast for the eye to follow. The enemies panicked, some trying to leap away, but too late. Nearly half of them were struck mid-air and shredded instantly by the sheer velocity and force of the ice storm.

Beltimore summoned another cluster of ice shards and launched them again. The enemies scattered, desperate to escape. But Beltimore repeated the process, his eyes cold and merciless.

When the massacre ended, the cavern walls and ceilings were nearly encased in jagged ice. The temperature, already freezing, dropped even further.

Looked like we were celebrating Christmas early this year.

Alice walked toward one of the robed figures, his leg was pierced by a shard, and he was now crawling away, trying to escape.

"What are you doing here?" Alice’s voice was sharp. "What were you planning to do with the Kaoslith?"

The robed figure did not answer. He kept crawling, dragging his body toward the Kaoslith.

Bob and I moved closer, watching.

I noticed where he was going. My eyes widened. "Alice! He’s heading for the Kaoslith!" I shouted, and was about to rush forward—

But Alice extended her arm, blocking me.

Why did she blocked me?

The figure reached the Kaoslith. He pressed his bloodied hand against his wounded leg, coating it in red. Then, with the last of his strength, he slammed that bloody hand against the crystal.

A crimson handprint was left smeared on the Kaoslith’s surface.

"What’s he doing?" Bob asked.

Then—

The Kaoslith began to glow.

A humming noise echoed in the chamber as lines of glowing purple light stretched out along the floor... and then up the walls... and then across the ceiling.

Massive magical arrays, etched in light, shimmered into view, pulsing and expanding, until the entire chamber was bathed in an eerie, ominous purple glow.
