Chapter 112: Redwing Disciple

Linus was silent.

We kept walking toward the guild. Bob and I kept glancing at Linus.

"Why did you say that, Bob?" I asked.

"Yui told me a little bit about her work. One of them involves quest papers. Usually, a quest is signed by the commissioner and countersigned by the guild staff. But your quest paper didn’t even have a single signature," Bob explained.

I see. That’s why I sensed something was wrong with Linus’s quest paper.

"And one more thing. The reason I said you were faking the quest was because of what happened during our confrontation with Cerdic. Don’t you think you agreed too quickly when he challenged us, without even talking it over with us first?" Bob said.

Linus remained quiet.

"Look here, I don’t mind if you want to join our party, but if you trick us like this again in the future, forget about asking for our help," Bob said, his voice loud enough that some passersby turned to look at us.

Linus sighed.

He then stopped at the railway bridge. Below us was a small river, clean, with fish swimming happily.

"What you said was true, and I’m really sorry for that. But I had a reason," he said.

"What reason is that? I know you’re hiding something from us. Why don’t you just tell everything?" I asked.

"It’s not that I don’t want to tell you. But until I fully trust all of you and feel confident in your abilities, I don’t plan to reveal everything yet. Though, to be honest, in terms of ability, you guys already seem good enough," he said, still looking down at the small river. His eyes were distant.

"Before this, I put my trust in someone. But that person betrayed everything I had, my hometown, my family... my friend..." His words were slow but carried a heavy weight.

"It seems I have a bit of trauma when it comes to trust," Linus chuckled.

I didn’t speak. I looked at Bob. He simply shrugged.

I then walked beside Linus, both of us gazing at the river below. Its flow was slow, with clean water.

"I don’t mean to give you false hope or anything... but for me and Bob, we will never betray a friend’s trust. You’re our friend now. If talking to us can ease your burden, then we’re more than willing to listen," I said with a smile, placing my left hand on his shoulder.

Linus looked at me, his eyes widened slightly, then he closed them.

"Thank you. You two are nice people," he said softly.

I smiled.

"You guys can go rest. Please, leave me alone for a while," Linus said.

We nodded, then waved at him and made our way to our room.

Along the way, we stayed silent, each of us thinking about what Linus had said. Before this, we didn’t take his words seriously. But now, it seemed like he carried a heavy burden in both his heart and his mind.

"He’s like a woman, isn’t he? Very difficult to understand," Bob said.

"Well, if I was in his situation, I might act like that too."

We continued walking.

"Oh right, what did you get from that red condor?" I asked. I was too lazy to check the status. Usually, when we got new loot, it would appear in our cards section. Even if Bob was the one who looted it, I could still see it.

"Oops... I totally forgot. This time we struck gold, dude!" Bob said, then opened his status. "Let’s sit there."

We sat on a bench made of beautiful oak wood, finely crafted. It was placed at the junction of a cobblestone road, beneath a not-so-tall tree. Not many people passed by here. Mina was flying happily around us, of course attracting the attention of those who did.

"Mina-chan, come here. I know you’re happy to be free, but don’t fly around like that. People might try to kidnap you," I said.

Mina pouted and landed on Bob’s shoulder.

Bob opened his status and navigated to the card section. He tapped one of the cards, and it expanded—revealing the description.

I was surprised to see the details.

"It’s a Super Rare class, Bob!" I shook his shoulder, unable to contain my excitement.

"And it’s a melee type too, perfect for your style!"

"Yeah," Bob replied casually.

I noticed his expression.

"Why the long face? Didn’t you always say you wanted at least a Super Rare class or weapon? Now you’ve finally got one."

He used to say that anything below Super Rare was trash, but now that he actually had one, his reaction was strangely dull.

"It’s not like that. I’m really happy to get this card, but at least give me something cool, like Dark Knight, or Swordmaster, or maybe Elemental Blade or something. But what I got is this... It looks like I just graduated from being a student of that bird."

He sighed.

I read the card again, and I understood what he was saying. But I noticed something.
