Chapter 5: Dragon heart

Liam panted heavily, his breaths coming in ragged gasps. "Huff, Huff, Huff, Shit! Why the hell are they so fast?!" he cursed, glancing over his shoulder to see the gigantic Goblins closing in. Even the one he had brutally injured was still raging forward.

The system's warning blared in his ear, "Warning! Warning! Warning! Seek treatment immediately! 5 minutes left before you die!" Liam's eyes widened as he limped forward, following the firefly-like light. Dark red trails of blood marked his path.

As the light finally stopped, Liam's heart sank. They stood before a dead end – no passageways, no escape. "What the...?" Liam's voice trailed off, his anger boiling over. "First, you lead me to this dungeon, which I'm sure is way beyond my rank. I barely survived, and now you lead me to a dead end? To receive a beating from the Goblins I barely escaped?" Liam's voice shook with rage.

The sound of approaching footsteps silenced him. The Goblins were closing in.

Liam muttered to himself, "Tsk, there must be some way I can get out of this!" He carefully examined the dungeon walls, scrutinizing each brick. Suddenly, he noticed one that seemed out of place. He quickly pushed it in, and for a moment, nothing happened. Then, the dungeon began rumbling, as if something that hadn't been opened in decades was stirring.

To Liam's surprise, the wall started turning, revealing a hidden passage. Without hesitation, he entered the passage as the wall closed behind him, leaving the pursuing Goblins stunned and confused.

A golden door stood before him, shining brightly. The materials used to create it were clearly rare and exotic, and the craftsmanship was exceptional.

[Warning! Warning! Warning! You have two minutes left before you die!]

Liam gritted his teeth in pain as he pushed the door open. A flash of light illuminated his face as the door creaked open.

Liam was speechless, staring at the treasures that filled the room. Gold coins, accessories, and weapons lay scattered everywhere. Although he didn't need the gold, he would have taken the accessories and weapons if he weren't dying.

"What a cruel joke..." Liam said, his voice laced with bitterness. "I find all this when I'm about to die?"

His gaze landed on a fiery golden object, larger than a human head, surrounded by iridescent scales that reflected light and shifted colors. The object pulsed with a mesmerizing light.

Liam's voice was barely audible as he whispered, "What is that..." His heart racing, he felt an inexplicable pull towards the object, as if it was a long-lost part of him.

[Warning! Warning! Warning! You have one minute left before you die!]

Liam ignored the urgent message, his trembling hand reaching out to touch the object. As soon as he made contact, a notification popped up.

[Ding! You have come into contact with a dragon heart! Do you wish to absorb its power?]

Liam's eyes widened in shock as he stared at the notification. "Dragon heart?" he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. He gazed at the dragon heart in awe, still holding it in his hand.

[Item: Dragon heart]

Item Rank: Mythic

Description: The heart of a once-great dragon, stolen from its body upon death. Waiting for its next kin to absorb its power. Once absorbed by someone with traits of a dragon, it unlocks all hidden powers, stats, and skills, and opens an evolution path for them, depending on their tribe.

Liam's voice was laced with regret as he shook his head, his face pale and his body visibly shaking. "Such a shame... I wonder if normal humans can absorb this..." He trailed off, his eyes fixed on the dragon heart.

[Warning! Warning! Warning! You will die in 30 seconds!]

Liam's gaze shifted to the system's message, and he let out a bitter laugh. He looked down at the dragon heart in his hand, a glimmer of determination in his eyes. "Tsk, I don't know if this is going to work, but it's better than not trying at all."

With a deep breath, Liam accepted the option to absorb the dragon heart's power.

[Absorption initiated. Please wait...]

A warm, tingling sensation spread through Liam's body as the absorption process began. His body shone with a golden glow, and he felt himself floating above the ground. His vision blurred, and unconsciousness threatened to take over as the warm feeling enveloped him.

[10...8...5...3...2...1 You have ddddd@#$@... You have successfully absorbed the Dragon heart's power!]

The message was the last thing Liam saw before his consciousness faded to black.

Meanwhile, back in the room where the massive Goblin sat on a skull-adorned chair, its face contorted in genuine shock. "What?! The Dragon Heart in the dungeon has been absorbed?!" its voice growled, laced with anger and disgust.

The Goblin's massive fist clenched, and it slammed it onto the bone chair, shaking the room violently. "Tsk, I guess that's for the best. I couldn't enter that room before, no matter how hard I tried." A sly, disgusting chuckle escaped its lips. "But now that it's been absorbed, to escape, they'll need to kill me – which is impossible. I'll just steal it from them!"

Suddenly, the Goblin's eyes flashed with a malevolent purple glint as he bellowed, "Any human caught is to be taken alive and brought to me!" His thunderous voice shook the entire room, ensuring that his command was heard by all.
