"Misunderstanding? Heh!" The bearded man scoffed. "There's no misunderstanding between us! And haven't I told you? You've offended someone you can't afford to. Understand?"

At this point, Liu Ergou dared not make any rash moves and could only say repeatedly, "I get it, I get it!"

Then he quickly changed the subject. "Look, my friend, since I'm about to die, can you at least let me know who I've offended? That way, I can also..."

Liu Ergou hadn't finished speaking before the bearded man cut him off. "Heh, you little brat. You think you can trick information out of me? I'm done talking. Time to see you off!"

Without the slightest hesitation, the bearded man loaded his gun. In that instant, Liu Ergou clearly felt the threat of death.

Just as the bearded man finished his preparations, Liu Ergou suddenly shouted again, "Wait, wait! I have one last thing to say, can you let me finish? If you don't let me finish this one sentence, I won't be able to rest in peace! I'm sure you've heard that those who die with regrets might turn into..."

Liu Ergou trailed off.

Hearing this, the bearded man couldn't help but shudder. He spat fiercely to one side. "Pah! Damn it! You sure talk a lot. Spit it out, quick! This is the last bit of patience I have!"

When he heard the man agree, Liu Ergou didn't beat around the bush and immediately shouted, "Friend, I don't care how much the person who hired you paid to have me killed! I'm willing to pay double that price to buy my own life! And you don't have to worry about me not having the money. I assure you I'm good for it, unless you're asking for something absurd like one or two hundred million!"

At these words, the bearded man froze. He had never expected Liu Ergou to say such a thing. It was the first time he'd ever encountered a situation like this, leaving him flustered and unsure of what to do.

Seeing the bearded man frozen there, Liu Ergou felt a surge of joy. If he's hesitating, then the rest will be easy to handle.

Seizing the moment, Liu Ergou pressed on, "Just name your price. One million? Two million? Or maybe three, four million?"

As Liu Ergou threw out these numbers, the bearded man couldn't help but tremble. He didn't reply right away, instead taking the opportunity to scrutinize Liu Ergou carefully. He clearly remembered his instructions from above: this was just a dirt-poor country bumpkin with not a dime to his name. His reward for the job was 500,000 and a ticket to freedom. But now, that 500,000 seemed laughable. The man in front of him was starting the bidding at one million—at minimum. This made the bearded man hesitate.

After a long moment, the bearded man finally asked, "Are you sure you're not lying to me?"

Hearing this, Liu Ergou replied irritably, "My life is in your hands, my friend. Why would I lie to you? What, do you think I'm that eager to eat a bullet? That's not a tasty meal. One bite and my brains would be splattered all over the place!"

Liu Ergou's words made the bearded man burst into laughter. "Hahaha, you're an interesting guy! Alright then, since you're offering, I won't be shy. A flat two million! Give me 2,000,000, and consider your life bought. Deal?"

Without a second thought, Liu Ergou nodded in agreement. "No problem! If you'd asked for 20,000,000, I might not have been able to come up with it, but 2,000,000 is a piece of cake! Just lower the gun, and I'll make a call."

However, as soon as Liu Ergou finished speaking, the bearded man's expression changed abruptly. He snarled, "You little punk, you dare try to pull a fast one on me! You're courting death!"

The man's sudden mood swing genuinely startled Liu Ergou. "No, wait. Why the sudden change of heart? What's this about?"

"Don't think I don't know your tricks!" the bearded man said sharply. "You just want to use this chance to call for help! You won't succeed! Since you're going to be difficult, then you might as well..."

The man's words left Liu Ergou exasperated. "Come on, friend, use your brain for a second! If I were to transfer the money to you online, do you honestly believe you'd get away? The police would track you down the moment the funds hit your account. It wouldn't even take an hour! Besides, even if I don't call the cops, a sudden large deposit like that would trigger the bank to freeze your account! That's why I want someone to bring you cash. I'm doing this for your own good!"

The bearded man nodded repeatedly as he listened. "Oh, I see! Looks like I wronged you!" he said. "You're actually a pretty decent guy. Go on, make the call!"

The comment about being a "decent guy" made Liu Ergou want to laugh. This guy is way too unprofessional, and his brain really doesn't seem to work right. I've spelled it all out for him, and he still hasn't caught on. I can just report him to the police after I give him the money! And yet, he's had no reaction whatsoever. Still, for me, no reaction is a good thing.

With that thought, Liu Ergou quickly took out his phone and called Han Jiajia. A few seconds later, the call connected.

"Jia Jia," Liu Ergou said as soon as she answered, "withdraw two million from the company account and bring it to me. I'm at a rural resort in the suburbs. Hurry!"

After speaking, Liu Ergou hung up without the slightest hesitation.

Seeing Liu Ergou hang up after just a few words, the bearded man beside him nodded in satisfaction. In his eyes, Liu Ergou was being very compliant, not trying any tricks at all. What a relief!

At this thought, the man's tense expression relaxed considerably. But he didn't lower the gun from Liu Ergou's head; he kept it pressed firmly there. This left Liu Ergou feeling quite helpless. Even at this point, he still hasn't let his guard down. He really isn't giving me a single chance.

「At the police station」

While Liu Ergou felt resigned, Han Jiajia was frowning deeply, staring at the phone in her hand.

What does Liu Ergou mean by this? Why did he suddenly make such an abrupt and cryptic phone call? Or did he dial the wrong number?
