Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Aggrieved

It was already past one in the morning when Tristan Grayson got back.

She had fallen asleep in the living room.

So, the moment Tristan opened the door, she was startled awake.

Looking at Tristan’s dark expression, she said nothing and got up to head for the bedroom.

But Tristan didn’t give her the chance, reaching out and grabbing her. "What the hell did you tell my parents!"

"What do you mean?" she asked, her eyes hazy with sleep and confusion.

"Stop pretending. If you hadn’t said anything, how could my parents have possibly known which hospital Maggie Monroe was in!"

"Tristan, what on earth are you talking about? I don’t understand." ’How could I possibly know which hospital Maggie Monroe is in?’

"This afternoon, my parents secretly transferred Maggie Monroe to another hospital. Are you telling me this has nothing to do with you? I thought you were only after money, but I never expected your ambition to be this huge! What is this? We’re divorced, and you still want to cling to the title of Young Madam of the Grayson Family?" If he hadn’t been looking for Maggie Monroe, he would have been back much earlier.

"I didn’t! This has nothing to do with me."

"How could I possibly believe a woman like you? Don’t you just want to remain the Young Madam of the Grayson Family? Fine. I’ll give you what you want. Tomorrow at seven in the morning, I’ll hold a press conference and announce to the entire nation that you are my wife. But you must promise to hand over Maggie Monroe."

"Tristan, are you insane?! I don’t know where Maggie Monroe is, and this has nothing to do with me." ’If I were still so attached to the title of Young Madam of the Grayson Family, why would I have even asked for a divorce?’

"Heh..." Tristan scoffed, making it clear he didn’t believe her and had no desire to speak with her further.

Seeing Tristan like this, her heart bled. ’Why does he have to treat me this way? Why does he have to slander me?’

’Just because I love him, does that mean he can slander me like this? No, I won’t accept it. What right does he have to say I’m the one who did it?’ "Tristan, whether you believe me or not, I didn’t do this."

"You think I’ll believe you?"

Fighting back tears, she pointed at Tristan and roared through her sobs, "Tristan! If I, Mika Summers, have even the slightest thought of staying entangled with you, then may I die a horrible death!"

After screaming those words, she was completely drained of strength. She wrapped her arms around herself and sank to the floor.

Tristan, however, stood frozen to the spot.

His instincts told him not to believe her. Yet, as he watched her sink to the floor, hugging herself, he felt a flicker of emotion stir within him.

’Could it be that she really didn’t do it?’

’But if it wasn’t her, then who was it?’

’Someone took candid photos of him, and then told his parents Maggie Monroe’s hospital address.’

He frowned, his gaze darkening. "I’ll ask you one last time. It really wasn’t you? You didn’t tell my parents which hospital Maggie Monroe was in?"

"Tristan, you never even told me which hospital Maggie Monroe was in, so how could I possibly know?" A fresh wave of indignation washed over her.

"Then what about the candid photos?"

"How many times do I have to tell you? It wasn’t me."

"Why should I believe you?" He had no reason to trust a woman who had demanded a hundred million.

Tristan’s words were another sharp pain in her heart. Enduring the ache, she searched for words he might believe. "Tristan, you’ve already given me a hundred million. I have no reason to cross you, do I? If I did, what if I couldn’t get my hands on the money?"
