District 42-Chapter 400: The end of the legend
Vick was standing in front of a white door. She was fidgeting her fingers and biting her lips from time to time. She rubbed viciously her silky and silver hair as she waited for someone inside that room.
’Is he going to get out soon? Why I am feeling so... so uneasy? I thought that I was ready for this, but I am not. I am definitely not! Hmmm... I cannot stop fidgeting. I am restless.’
Her nervousness was something surreal at that point. She was waiting in front of that door for a long time.
’When is he going to do it? Is he still feeling uneasy as well? But it was his freaking decision in the end!’
The new Queen of District 42 didn’t feel like that even in her coronation. Actually, when that time came, she was rather calm and composed as if she was born prepared for that task.
’This wait... the events that will happen next... Even gaining the right to command an entire District and represent it seems to be small in comparison...’
MMA appeared walking into the corridor. He had both hands behind his back and was smiling. Yes, smiling.
"Ah! MMA, it’s a relief to see you here! Do you know if everything is prepared for him already?"
The genius scientist and leader of the Aesirs bowed deeply before answering.
"Yes, Your Highness. Everything is settled. However, I am afraid that the White warrior will last a long time to finally be ready to go. It’s always hard to do this kind of thing. It’s even admirable that he is gathering enough courage to make something like this at this point in his life. However, I do think that it is the best choice that he could take, due to his personality." He spoke, sincerely. That soft and bright smile never left his face.
"You know, after Yanke hacked your system and made you a free individual, I was really happy, but it’s strange to see you smiling like this. I never thought that I would see the Boss smiling, haha!" She changed the subject, trying to not think about Casper too much.
MMA nodded his head, agreeing with her.
"That individual called Yanke sure is amazing. To have done something like this... No wonder Casper was so proud of him and treated him as a son."
The Queen had a long conversation with MMA. Meanwhile, Casper was still inside that room, sitting on his luxurious bed.
In front of him were a heavy backpack, his laser sword, his pistol, and his black mask.
The soldier had a melancholic look on his face. He was feeling really bad for doing something like that right at that moment, but if he stayed in idleness he would get crazy.
"Yanke?"
Always when he was in doubt, he called the name of his partner... of his son. Not just when in doubt, actually, but when he was missing him or feeling sad.
He always expected a response, no matter if that was the umpteenth time that he called his son’s name.
Of course, no answer ever came.
During that entire month after Yanke’s death, he never got a response.
’Yanke?’ He called in his mind this time, but nothing came.
’Well,’ he shrugged, ’I will try again tomorrow.’
Sighing, Casper gathered all his courage and strength, leaving the bed with an energetic jump.
’Let’s go...’
Casper opened the door of his bedroom, meeting with Vick, his wife, and MMA, his partner.
The trio walked in an awkward silence through that place. Nobody knew exactly what to say at that moment.
When they left the Castle through a teleporting pad, they appeared in one of the extremes of the district, the end of the biggest avenue of that place. One that crossed the entire district. The place where everything started for Casper, although it was quite far away.
’Man... I never had the chance to see these walls... They are really big, huh?’ The walls that surrounded the district were the first thing that he saw after the teleportation was the walls.
Right after, he looked around him.
All the citizens were gathered in the main avenue, looking at him.
The sunlight of that noon was bathing the entire avenue, making the atmosphere seem brighter and happier than it was moments ago, though that scent of melancholy was still there within the hearts of everyone.
Casper appreciated the faces of all those citizens... Yes, just citizens. Not Jarls, nor Aesirs, nor Ridires, nor Frelsis. Just a free folk, living in the same place, doing what they wanted to do, contributing equally for everything in their homes and their families.
The White warrior spotted familiar faces, others that were unknown.
He felt strange, somehow... It was like a dream.
In fact, he dreamed with that day. While still in Halden, he dreamed with it.
’But it’s not a dream. It’s real. I did it.’
He took a deep breath, then turned to Vick.
"I will be leaving, my Queen." He bowed. That was the first time that he didn’t bow sarcastically or fakely to her.
Vick remained silent for a moment.
Casper, then, began to walk, turning his back to her. He was a bit disappointed with her reaction, but nothing was helping it.
However, he stopped midway when she shouted:
"W-Will you be back!?" Vick had tears in her eyes.
Casper thought for a while, glancing to the skies above those walls, then staring at Vick again and approaching her another time.
He kissed her softly on the lips.
"Yes. I will be back."
"Why do you need to go?" She hugged him tightly.
"Because this world is just too big and a lot is going on. I need to see all these things with my own eyes. I need to help people that need to be helped." He departed from her, taking a few steps back.
"A soldier cannot be anything but a soldier. They must be a soldier. Furthermore, I am a warrior now as well. And a warrior needs to use his sword, otherwise, he won’t be a warrior anymore. That’s how I have been living."
The other Aesirs gathered together with Casper and walked with him on that avenue, except MMA. They were looking with determination at the exit of the walls, where a new world would show up before their eyes.
The crowd of people was cheering the group as they walked on their path.
Without worrying anymore, and with his heart light as a feather, the White warrior took back his Ukulele and began to play a song as they approached the exit.
When the final step was taken, the exit closed, putting an end to the legend of the White warrior... to the legend of District 42.
