Chapter 195: Suicidal mission part 4

Casper and Ana were guiding the group of four people they could save. They needed to arrive at the operation base as fast as they could, and now that no one was guarding the ways to get there, the soldiers from the Black Widow would have it completely opened. It was a race against them, basically. The Yanke Forces needed to get there before they could.

The soldier, though, wasn’t too concerned about them. What got him worried was a question raised by one of his comrades: For how long would the hacking into the security system last?

If all the automatic turrets, guns, and even land mines got activated there, they wouldn’t stand a chance to survive in that place.

"We are on a military camp in which they have one of the best Belic technology... Their security is very high, and at the sight of a huge attack, it will be calling reinforcements right away, and their other base isn’t too far away from here.

"That’s why just 50 soldiers from the Yanke Forces were called to make this operation instead of a whole army. If the attack was huge, slow, and too flashy, it would be really bad. They needed people who could take care of it as fast as possible, with the minimum of soldiers, and with precision. We are these people."

Casper didn’t know if they were being punished for being competent, or if it was an honor to be sent on a suicidal mission. Nonetheless, in any way, he felt disgusted and angry, even betrayed.

The colonel looked to the group that was following him, analyzing their conditions.

"Some of them are harmed, but there is nothing major here. However, it’s still debilitating, and most of them don’t have their wounds treated properly, so they will be losing blood in good amounts. Their bodies already might have used 40% of their energy. They are trained soldiers, so a situation like this, even though it’s dangerous, is just routine for them..." His comrades were gazing back at Casper, confused. They didn’t know what was the colonel’s intentions with that sudden stop.

It was too quick, and he just had the time to look at each one of them, from hair to toe, and then start to walk again.

"The question here is: what should I do? Do I push them even more until the operation base, running as fast as we can, or do we economize more energy for what we will be facing once we get into there?"

He was troubled, thinking about what to do. He was sure that their maximum would be needed once they got into the operation base. That building was huge, and probably they would be facing lots of soldiers, some bold scientists, let alone the security measures they might have had placed in that local.

Casper was going to call Ana. The brigade captain always helped him when he was troubled with some questions.

However, before he could say something to her, he heard a strange noise. It was a mechanic noise, like engines, pistons, and chains working at the same time. It was some type of machine.

Casper looked to all sides, trying to sort out what was going on there. The silent and dark night made that situation look scarier. He felt like warning his comrades about what he heard, but before he could do it, something appeared in his sight, it was coming out of the floor and rising slowly. The same mechanical noises were coming from there.

The soldier immediately started to look at the walls, and he saw those same things appearing there, also as some machines attached to the watchtowers. Casper’s hair stood to the end.

"The hacking ended..." He spoke, shocked, looking to his comrades. They were also looking to all sides and seeing what was happening there.

The colonel, seeing all his troops standing still in the same place and without reacting, gritted his teeth, swallowing his fear and hesitation.

"Why are you still here!? Run!" He shouted, as loud as he could, his voice echoed through the night, and he was sure that it had warned some soldiers of Black Widow, but his comrades were now awake, at least.

Casper took a grenade from his pocket, pressed a button on it, and threw it beside the turret that was going out of the floor in front of them. When it was ready to shot at the group, the grenade exploded in a strong wave of electricity that destroyed the turret internally. The explosion wasn’t loud, the only thing that made more noise was that machine entering in a short circuit.

Once that threat was gone, they ran for their lives. They knew that soon all the turrets around would be shooting at them, even drones would appear, the land mines were already activated as well.

"Spread! If we keep together we will be in an even worse situation!" He barely had finished ordering and they were already splitting.

When their positions were taken, and they crossed quickly another turret, but this time without destroying it, the shots begun from all directions.

It was like running on death row. They were doing so strong strides that grass and soil were being thrown everywhere. It was like their knees and ankles would break at any time. Not even at the start of the operation, they ran so fast like that.

The situation got critical once the land mines started to explode. The group was counting with their luck at that point, relying on the map they had memorized before. That map had the position of the mines as well, and they were obligated to analyze it and don’t forget it no matter what. In the end, it was more useful than they thought.

Still, the landmines activated randomly sometimes, and most of them exploded right beside them.

"It’s making too much noise! I hope that it can’t be enough to mess with our plans!"

They were supposed to invade the place making the less fuss as they could. If they alerted people from the near base, they would come and ruin everything. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

However, nothing was helping it. They needed to keep pressing forward and doing their best to arrive at the operation base as fast as possible.

Casper wasn’t even paying attention to his comrades anymore. He just looked in front, forgetting everything else.

"Just a little bit more! In the next turn, the base will be there!" The soldier nearly got caught in an explosion, some bullets scratched him as well in the meantime, but he didn’t stop to run.

His goal appeared in front of his eyes. Its door was already opened, just with one soldier out there waiting for the rest of the group to arrive, Casper was truly relieved.

With a last sprint, he could reach the door and threw himself inside that place. Right after him, the other soldiers entered there as well, and soon the entrance door was closed.

Casper was wanting to stay laying on the ground for more time, but his mind pushed his body. He couldn’t think of anything else other than verifying if everyone was okay, so he brushed off his laziness and raised from the ground quickly.

The colonel looked around, seeing all the others who were with him before. They were sitting on the floor, gasping, seeming athletes that just got out of a marathon (and what they did out there was nearly a marathon).

"Yes, good... Everyone... less..." His eyes widened, and he walked towards the door to open it. It hadn’t a doorknob, it was an automatic door that opened just with a keycard, or with biometry. The other soldiers needed to mess with its system to open the door.

Casper pushed it, but the door didn’t move. He pushed again, stronger, but the result was the same. He was going to slam his shoulder on that thing, even if his bone broke because of that, but someone put the hand on his back.

"It won’t open, colonel..." The soldier who was waiting at the entrance for them before was the one saying it. He tapped Casper on the back, and his voice was somewhat sad.

"He was trying to reach us, wasn’t he?" He asked, with his voice hoarse and low.

His comrade lowered his head, hesitating for a moment. He took off his hand from Casper’s back.

The colonel had accepted his silence as a yes, but, even so, the soldier answered him.

"Yes, but he was too delayed, he would be very late to catch up with us, and... soldiers were appearing around there as well..."

The colonel nodded with his head.

"The last thing I did with that man was too scary him with a gun, then apologize. Just that." He had a bitter voice and was clenching his fists.

He gave his back to the door, looking to all the others. The soldiers who were trying to open that door were there as well.

"With this, we have ten with us..." Casper leaned his back onto the wall, looking to the ceiling. "According to the original plan, that’s not enough to accomplish the rest of the mission."

Silence befell on that place.
