Chapter 194: Suicidal mission part 3

Ana pressed her back against the container again. Her breath was unsteady, and she was feeling that there was something strange with her arm.

She had a lot of difficulties while trying to reload her gun again. She felt that her arm was losing strength, and it was getting increasingly shaky.

The brigade captain strived to finish what she needed to do there. Her rifle was prepared to shot at any time.

"Am I too nervous? What is happening here?" She put her hand on her arm, rubbing it up and down until her forearm. However, with gloves, she wouldn’t feel if there was something there.

She continued to rub until a strong pain crossed all her arm and nearly made her scream. The captain needed to grit her teeth to prevent it to happen. After the pain lessened and she was calm again, she soothed the tension on her jaw and focused her look on her arm.

Although it was night, she was already used to that, and could, with some struggle, find what was going on there.

On her forearm, right on where the joint of the elbow was, she got shot. Someone could get a lucky shot on her.

"D-Damn... Damn... It will hurt a lot afterward... And I don’t even know what to do if my elbow got completely messed forever... Will I need to retire after this, if... if there is something after for me?"

She was going to answer her own question until someone appeared on the side of the container. Ana was rambling, but not aloof, and she could react just in time to leap to the side.

The man couldn’t target her but was already adjusting his aim. The brigade captain, though, was faster than him, putting her barrel at point-blank range, right on the middle of his face, and shot.

She was going to retaliate against the enemies she knew that we’re going in her direction, but before the first step out of the cover was made, a grenade passed in front of her rolling on the ground.

The captain ran away as fast as she could, and the explosion happened just a bit after. The impact pushed her to the ground, and hit her jaw, letting her dizzy.

She was going to get up quickly, but a whole troop of soldiers was already in front of her, guns in hand and their looks showed that they weren’t going to spare her for even a second. Her mind gave up for just a moment.

"I died", was what passed in her mind at that time. Even more when she noticed their fingers tensing and pulling the trigger.

However, before they could pull it, a burst of shoots got two of them at once. And while the others began to turn around, someone appeared as fast as a bullet and ripped off the arm of a soldier with a single swing with a machete.

He followed with multiple shots with a pistol, all of them at point-blank.

"FIght back, Ana!" Once she heard the voice of Casper, Ana got her rifle again and started shooting as well, until none of them were standing anymore.

In a state of frenzy, the colonel immediately ran towards her, raising her from the ground and doing a quick check-up to see if she was hurt anywhere.

"Your forearm..." He pointed, and she found it incredible that he could be so perceptive even in that pitch-black night.

She brushed off his hands, adjusting her grip on the gun.

"Not the time to treat me as a child, colonel."

Casper faltered for a second after those straightforward words, but he knew that Ana was just right.

"Where are the others?" The soldier asked, resuming the ideal composure for that situation.

"They are spread around this area. We were working together, and I myself designated their positions and how we would do to defend this path for the Black Widow soldiers don’t pass. I know more or less their positions in this case."

Casper nodded to her, relying on her judgment.

"Then, I trust you. Lead the way, captain."

They went through the military camp, covering as fast as they could that area.

The enemies appeared in waves, and they both needed to constantly deal with them.

At the same time, Ana was fulfilling her role to track and find the remnant soldiers of the Yanke Forces, gathering them.

The enemies started to appear from everywhere at some point, and the colonel could notice that it wouldn’t be good for them to keep there like that. However, there wasn’t another path to take, they should stay in the same way if they wanted to find the other soldiers, but to retrieve would be the same.

The group was being cornered there, and it was difficult for them to keep going like that.

Casper’s group found another wave of, at least, ten soldiers coming from different paths and making their group need to split at some point, but without losing track of each other.

"Damn it! They don’t stop coming! How many soldiers do they have here!?" One of them complained, trying to reload his gun, but noticing he was out of ammo. "I can’t reload here!"

"Me neither!" Another one pointed, and Ana followed him, saying the same thing.

Casper looked to his own equipment, and he knew that, besides the pistol, his rifle was also out of ammunition.

"We can’t find the others with this few resources, and we are cornered now, which left us without too many options here..." Casper bit his lips.

That half of the group was hiding behind a huge building of the camp, each one taking care of one side.

He was so absorbed thinking about what to do that he forgot to pay attention to the side he was guarding.

"Casper, watch out!" Ana pushed him while making him trip on her foot. Multiple bullets aimed at Casper passed for him, missing by millimeters

Ana stole Casper’s pistol, aiming at the enemy who was approaching, and opening fire on him.

"T-thank you, captain..." The colonel raised from the ground, his legs were achy after so much time running nonstop, but he wasn’t caring too much about that since his adrenaline was so high.

"What do we do now?" The other soldier asked, trying to not comment about the last dangerous situation from seconds ago. "We are missing two people who might be dead by now, and we don’t know until when the hacking will last. If their Defense equipment activates again, we won’t stand a chance."

Casper got furious with that comment. He picked the pistol from Ana’s hands and walked towards him slowly.

"Stop talking subjectively and go straightforward since we don’t have time to waste, soldier."

"I am saying that, maybe, save two possibly dead people can cost the lives of us and the other three soldiers striving to survive near here, sir!"

Once he finished speaking, Casper pointed the gun towards him without hesitation and was really going to pull the trigger, but he felt a fist hitting hard his face and making him stumble some steps to the side.

When he was about to recover from the impact, a kick was delivered right on his nose, sending him stumbling again, but backward.

Ana grabbed him by his shirt after the strikes and pushed him against the wall.

"Are you stupid!? We have more four lives on our hands, you retard! We must save what we have with us, there is no point in risking anymore!"

"But, they can be alive and..."

She pushed him harder against the wall, Casper felt like his back was going to be cracked.

"Even if they are alive, it’s pointless! Start to reason like a soldier, colonel! You can’t save everyone!"

With her last quote, they stopped all of a sudden.

Once the truth was brought to reality, Casper could do nothing but lose the tension and anger he was feeling.

He kept his thoughts and words for himself and avoided his eyes from Ana.

The brigade captain loosened her push until she finally let go of Casper.

"I am sorry, colonel..."

The soldier stepped on his pride, shaking his head and apologizing.

"No, it’s not your fault. Instead, I am the one sorry here. Please keep putting some sense on my head." Casper looked at his other comrade. "And you as well, I apologize. You were right the entire time. Please, reach the other half of the group and tell them to move towards the operation base."

That soldier nodded quickly, then started to move swiftly and stealthy in the way to reach the other three who were farther away.

Soon everyone gathered again, and they were returning.

There were six people in total, counting Ana and Casper.

"We could find another one of our comrades..." Reported one of the soldiers in the middle of the way. "But he was shot at his leg so..."

The others looked cautiously to Casper, expecting the worst.

"Don’t worry. You did it right... We can’t save everyone, after all."
