Chapter 134: Medicine, and Alfar’s redemption

After the battle finished, without even talking about it, all the prisoners agreed that it was a good time to catch their breathes. Everyone was very worn out because of the previous battles, and even if they were willing to continue until the end, it wouldn’t work, since there were a lot of prisoners fainted, some nearly dying, around that part of the complex.

To help the wounded, Casper and Alfar separated three groups of prisoners who were less harmed and exhausted than the others to search for their fallen comrades and help as they could.

Some Ridires had quick solutions for regeneration in their equipment, and some devices to help with fast treatment as well, but these technologies needed Indigo.

At least, in the middle of those things, they could find that same potent oil for deep wounds that Casper saw before in action and even used.

That thing was called Teine, which Casper knew that in their language meant fire, which was a reasonable name to address to something like that.

"It’s strange how they mix nordic dialect with English here... I saw some people talking in the two languages at the same time, it was quite confusing." The dialects from that world were identical to the ones that Casper was used in his world.

It was no wonder since most of the things there remembered quite a lot of characteristics that Earth had.

Also, it was quite normal to hear people addressing that world as Talamh Planet, and looking into dictionaries, he discovered that it was Planet Earth.

Sometimes he would wonder if that universe had something different from his, besides the strange way that the society transformed and evolved with the time, but with his range of action, he couldn’t find many things while working at the lab.

"I probably should go outside the walls and explore the rest of the world, know more people and try to get more acquaintanced with this universe... Though now I need to focus entirely on this District, and, by the way, I didn’t even see the walls they mentioned before to me..."

Casper rubbed his hands over his face, feeling a bit tired. He was sitting on the ground, waiting for the prisoners to finish to gather all the harmed others and treat them to keep up with the escape.

At times when he could think of another thing other than getting out of Halden, he would start to wonder about that place and get lost in his own thoughts.

"I feel like there is a lot of things to do yet... Escape from this prison is a must, but there is so much hidden between the lines that it’s hard to think how I will pull through... Even working in a Laboratory for a month wasn’t too efficient to help me to get the knowledge I need here..."

As he was thinking about it, someone approached him. It was Olaf. He had somewhat cheerful eyes and was standing in front of Casper.

He threw to the soldier a round pot with some oil inside.

"Use it in your ankle. It isn’t every day when we get the chance to use Teine. This thing is expensive. Just the amount necessary to give one pot for warrior every two months costs more than the guns for a year."

Casper took it, looking to the content inside like it was gold.

"The medicine here is so advanced... But it’s overpriced..." He commented, taking a bit of the oil and passing carefully in his ankle.

"No, not quite. This oil is very difficult to produce, and it takes one year for it to be good to use. Supply, demand, and production; taking these three into account, the price is quite reasonable." Olaf explained, and that was not the first time that the ex-Jarl had displayed such knowledge in this field.

"How is it made?"

"It’s quite hard to explain for a layman in pharmacy and cultivation, but, in short, it’s a set of specific herbs, cultivated with a special technique. Then, their cells are modified in the laboratory, after they are matured. After this, you need to make the process to extract the essence of these herbs, then add some chemicals and do a treatment process with the solution you will obtain."

Casper found it quite impressive. It was a tough process, indeed. But he was expecting this more or less since the oil was so incredible.

"That’s amazing... I can’t even believe that there are people out there who could think of it..."

"Ah, no... It wasn’t a group, but a single woman. She did all the process for the first time alone. She is, nowadays, a doctor from the Healer’s room of the Real family."

Casper nearly widened his eyes but prevented himself to do so.

The woman that found out about that miraculous oil was the same one that he knew on his first day inside the castle.

"So, that jerk of a butler was telling the truth when he said that she was an amazing researcher..." He thought to himself, giving credit to Raul to have had married a woman like that once.

After Casper experimented the unbearable pain of that medication and finished treating his wounds, he raised from the floor.

The pain in his ankle was decreasing gradually, and now he could at least limp without feeling that his feet would explode or split from his leg.

He walked towards the place where the prisoners were being treated, and Olaf followed him.

"Ah, one thing that I didn’t mention is that Alfar was gathering some people to make sure that the Ridires will not wake up and try something. We are stealing their handcuffs and handcuffing them together."

Casper’s heart beat painfully in his chest when he realized that he was about to commit one more mistake, and this time an obvious one.

"That’s a shame for sure..." He thought but ended up muttering it unwillingly. Olaf didn’t ask him about it, and just remained quietly walking beside him.

What hurt Casper more was the way the prisoners looked at him. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Back in Alfar’s riot attempt, it was quite painful to be looked at with anger and contempt. However, now that he saw in their faces that much respect towards him, it was even unbearable.

He felt that those people were starting not just to trust him because he was an entirely free man that could be a bridge to their own freedom, but as a leader who would guide them until there.

Casper couldn’t help but feel uneasy about being acknowledged like that, for something he wasn’t.

"After all my flaws and mistakes, putting everyone’s life at stake, there is no way that I am a good leader for you all. Just inexperienced people like you can forget these things and have this much of confidence in me..." He avoided his gaze from them, just letting them be. Soon or later they would be disappointed, anyway.

Casper found Alfar in the middle of that fuss. They needed to split the prisoners into four different corridors parallel to each other.

Even with the losses, they had about three hundred and fifty prisoners to take care of, and it was just too much for a single place.

The Dark elf was gathering those who would search for the fallen Ridires and ensure that they wouldn’t wake up and try to retaliate or call reinforcements somehow.

Even though it was nearly impossible for them to talk with someone outside Halden’s complex, prevent any possibility was always good, whatsoever.

"Hey, Alfar. Again, good work there. I never thought that you could be such a good leader. I think I underestimated you..." He complimented him again.

Casper was trying to be sympathetic with the man. He understood that it probably was difficult to face someone you tried to betray a while ago.

"No. It wasn’t just me. Ragnar woke up after some time, he was being treated for the prisoners you separated to take care of him during the Quicksand operation. When he opened his eyes and was told about everything, he suggested that we take this precaution." The humbleness of the Dark elf was something admirable, but it somewhat annoyed Casper.

"Stop being so modest. You are using people’s abilities and directing them to the right path. Not every leader is the one to make the plans and formulate the decisions."

Alfar just nodded and they got out of there.

The soldier remained looking at his back, tilting his head to the side. Those actions were making him dumbfounded.

"I wonder if he is still cautious around me..."

"No, it’s not that." Suddenly, Ragnar appeared, being supported by another prisoner. He seemed to have difficulty walking.

"What do you mean, Ragnar?" Olaf asked.

"I can’t read his mind properly, because that hell of a Dark elf is messing with his thoughts every time. But I know that Alfar is fighting with a decision inside his mind right now. I think that he is trying so much for the prisoners because of... redemption, maybe. And to show to them that he only wants them to be ok."

Alfar and Olaf rambled about those words while looking at Alfar walking away.
