Chapter 43: Civilization

Everyone had turned into zombies because more than 50% of their flesh remained intact.

Unlike skeletons, zombie apocalypse units regenerate very quickly, whereas skeletons barely regenerate at all. However, zombies have a drawback—after intense battles, they must consume raw meat; otherwise, they become slower and slower. Other than that, they are as relentless as skeletons.

Itai walked up to Flain, patted him on the shoulder, and smirked. "By the way, nice job. That was a really intense fight," he said.

Flain then tore off all his armor. It looked like it would fall apart on its own at any moment. These soldiers had much better armor than the bandits, and the generals had even better gear.

"That already crossed my mind," Flain nodded.

"I won’t take gear from these soldiers, just to be safe. If I try to sell it, someone might recognize it and arrest us," Itai muttered.

"Alright, then our goal is to find some civilization where we can sell this and save up for some quality armor for you. We’ll also hunt monsters, and as my army and you grow stronger, things will get even easier," Flain said with a smirk.

"I approve. Also, you can now let your army hunt monsters however you want because from now on, I’ll still receive souls even if someone from your army kills an enemy," Flain said.

"Really? I’ll gladly do that," Itai said.

"Just a thought—now that you have a full set of armor, it’s impossible to tell that you’re Undeath. But you’re still wearing the armor of a soldier from the army. Won’t that attract unwanted attention?" Itai asked.

Flain smirked. "I already thought of that," he murmured. Then, he walked over to a random puddle of blood and carefully drew stars all over his armor.

"Now it shouldn’t be noticeable," Flain said.

After that, Itai concealed all his Undeath, except for the three who carried the items for sale. Flain then waited until he had full stats. It was a long wait. Once everything was set, they set off through the forest.

As they walked, the two of them chatted about various topics, and Itai enjoyed breathing fresh air again after so long. They walked for about an hour without encountering anything, but then, in the distance, they saw something.

It was a field—a field of growing grain, being worked on by several people. Itai swapped out his skeletons carrying the sacks for zombies in full armor so it wouldn’t be obvious that they were undead. The zombies were still wearing the armor of the Empire of Light since they had been its soldiers, but the farmers likely wouldn’t suspect them of impersonating the Empire’s troops.

Flain and Itai walked toward them, and the people immediately noticed their approach.

"What do you want?" asked a tall man wearing a straw hat.

Flain had several questions right away. "Excuse me, we’re new here and come from far away. Would you mind if I asked you a few questions?" Flain asked.

"Sorry, but I’m just a simple farmer, so I won’t be able to answer anything too complicated. But if I know the answer, I’ll tell you," the man replied politely.

Flain assumed that warriors must hold a significantly higher status than farmers, considering how respectfully this man was speaking to him.

"Alright, first question. Do you know whose territory we are in right now?" Flain asked.

"We are currently in the territory of the Empire of Light. Sorry, but I can’t provide information on its borders or anything like that—I simply don’t know," the man said.

"Alright. Do you know where the nearest civilization is?"

"There’s a village not far from here where I live, and it belongs to the Empire of Light. If you’re asking about a city, there should be one in that direction," the man pointed.

"But that’s just from rumors—I’ve never been there myself, so sorry if my information isn’t accurate," he added.

Flain was about to ask his final question...

Itai ordered one of the zombie generals to remove all his armor and give it, along with his sword, to Flain. Then, he instructed him to take a sword and armor from one of the soldiers.

Flain took the armor and tried to put it on, but it wouldn’t fit. The spikes on his body wouldn’t allow it. No matter how he tried, it simply wouldn’t work.

[Tip: The system can resolve this issue, but it will cost all the EXP you currently have.]

Luckily, the system message saved Flain, and he happily agreed—he didn’t have that much EXP on him anyway.

[You have obtained the title: Adapter.]

Flain then opened his stats and clicked on Adapter.

[Adapter]

As a Bone Hunter, you have managed to adapt due to your strong will. You can retract parts of your body like a turtle. freewebnσvel.cøm

This was even better than Flain had expected. Not only would it help conceal the spikes on his body, but it also had combat applications. If someone aimed for his head during battle, he could simply retract it. He would definitely incorporate this into his fighting style.

Flain tested retracting his spikes, and it worked—there was no trace of them on his body anymore. Then, he tried retracting his head. That worked too, though he couldn’t see anything while it was retracted. When he extended it again, his vision returned.

Flain then put on the general’s armor, and the difference from the bandit armor was incomparable. It provided [+20] to vitality, [+4] to strength, and [+2] to agility.

"Uh... Flain?" Itai spoke up from behind, confused about what had just happened to Flain.

"I’ve solved all our problems with me being too conspicuous," Flain boasted.

"So we can go to some civilization now?" Itai asked, to which Flain nodded.

"By the way, where did that monster’s corpse go? I wanted to raise it," Itai asked.

"It dropped this artifact," Flain said, pointing at the item. "It can create an illusion on me that beings within a 3-kilometer radius will perceive, but it can only change one thing."

"I see. So that’s how you got rid of the sound issue. Makes sense. But even without that problem, this could be used in a lot of ways. You could, for example, make one of your swords invisible—that would really throw off an opponent," Itai suggested.
