Chapter 116: Magic

Flain cleared his mind; almost 20 minutes had passed, and he didn’t want to be late for the Magic lecture. So he immediately headed to the classroom Flor had shown him.

When Flain arrived in the classroom, he saw a few students entering, whom he joined and took a seat inside. Twenty minutes passed, and there were only 10 students out of 105 in the room, so Flain’s theory that poison affrity isn’t common was confirmed.

Among his classmates, he didn’t see any strong student with a good room except for one. That one was Malay Ydarmi, who had room number 6 and was a pure mage, the son of a Viscount, which is the second lowest noble rank, above a Baron.

Malay is seen as the future head of the Ydarmi family due to his talent and gift for magic, so his father invests a lot in him and he is his favorite son. All these factors came together and allowed him to secure room 6.

In the Empire of Light, if someone wants to become the head of a noble family, they must challenge the current head to a duel and kill them in it. However, there is an exception to become the head of a family without having to kill the current one.

That exception is if the head of the family surrenders and performs the Sunset Ritual, which takes 50% of the mana from their primary body part, making them half as strong and also a laughingstock to everyone.

This is used by heads of families who want their family to keep growing stronger and think they don’t have enough potential to remain as head, and at the same time don’t want to die. One such person was the head of the Ydarmi family.

Before long, their professor arrived. She was a woman with gray hair who looked about 50 years old. She wore a large green robe, under which she had light plate armor. She had carefree green eyes that matched the subject she taught. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

She stood in front of the students and began to speak. "Hello, I’m Sora Narin, the poison magic teacher. Hmm, this year more of you came than usual, I usually average about 5 students because poison affrity in humans is quite rare. The academy barely approved it," she said.

"Today, we won’t focus entirely on poison magic but on magic in general. Before we begin, do you have any questions about me?" Sora asked.

The students sitting together whispered among themselves, and after a while, a question came up. Since there weren’t as many students here as in other subjects, they felt much freer, and saying something wrong wouldn’t land dozens of eyes on them.

"How long have you been teaching at the academy?" one student asked.

"I only teach poison magic here because I’ve dedicated my whole life to it. It was actually because of me that the academy added poison to the types of magic. Partly because some of the important families complained and partly because they had me on hand and could use my knowledge. But to answer your question, I’ve been teaching here for exactly 117 years. Question time is over, so we’ll move on to magic," said Sora.

"Magic has 2 basic types: Normal magic, but professionally it’s called Elemental Magic, and Rune Magic. Do not confuse Rune Magic with the runes you have on your equipment, those are two completely different things. Anyway, I won’t go into detail about Rune Magic because I don’t specialize in it and because the Academy has had a separate subject for it for a long time now." Sora began lecturing.

"We’ll start with Elemental Magic. Every being, with some exceptions, is born with a mana core — 99% of beings are born with it, and only 1% are exceptions who either have it due to a rare genetic mutation or are naturally born without a mana core. Each being is different, but the mana core begins to develop from birth and is usually fully developed by the age of 12. When you absorb mana from slain monsters, the mana core absorbs it and sends it to your primary body part. When you train, the mana core sends mana depending on the type of training from which you absorbed the mana, so either to the body or to the brain. You can use the mana core even if you’re not yet 12 years old, but it won’t be as effective at compressing mana."

Flain remembered that at the dungeon gate 31, he used the excuse that he couldn’t take off his hood because of a genetic disease that had disfigured him. The general didn’t know what he was talking about, so he didn’t believe him. But it seems that higher-ranking people do know about genetics. Every being has its mana core located somewhere else; specifically, humans have it in their chest on the left side. The mana core is quite hard, but it can be damaged. When damaged, it becomes weakened but regenerates. Sometimes, it may happen that your opponent cuts or crushes the mana core in half.

"In such a case, you have two options: either live your life knowing you can never become stronger because the body without a mana core cannot absorb mana, or undergo a very expensive operation that transfers an identically strong mana core from a dead person into you." Sora explained.

The students listened carefully because knowing this kind of information is crucial for their future. Of course, their families had already briefly told them about these things too, but not in such detail.

"The mana core always determines your highest affinity to an element. Every race has different most common highest affinities, but for humans, it’s: fire, earth, and water. Of course, you can also use spells that don’t match your highest affinity, but they’ll be much weaker than those that do. For example, if you have an affinity to earth but decide to use wind-type spells, you can indeed use them without any problems, but they’ll never be as good as those used by people whose highest affinity is wind."

"When a Spell Master writes a book about their spell, they place particles of their own mana into it, which you absorb when you learn the spell from the book. Since most mages don’t have their main body part, their body — compared to a warrior at the same Stage — stands no chance in close combat, because the warrior’s body is superior in every aspect...
