Chapter 106: Academy

Then the trio began walking around the academy.

"This year is one of the most interesting years at the academy. There’s the daughter of a Duke here, and what’s even rarer is that two students have innate abilities. To understand how rare it is to be born with an innate ability — the odds are 1 in 10 million. If you were to be exposed, claiming it’s an innate ability would be risky; many people would be skeptical since you hadn’t used it until your exposure," explained Flor.

Innate abilities somewhat reminded Flain of the system in his home world. Most people there were born with some kind of innate ability. The strength of the ability one is born with depends on genetics and blood purity. When Flain was born, he had only slightly increased regeneration and reflexes — compared to his parents, who had some of the strongest abilities, it was nothing.

Even with such a weak innate ability, Flain managed to climb the ranks from someone worth less than a cow to the commander of an elite unit — which was like a miracle. But even then, he wasn’t even close to the power of his parents.

"And who has these innate abilities?" asked Itai curiously.

"The first is Akio Keshiru, son of the Archpriest. His innate ability is Slime Man, so he can turn parts of his body into slime. The other is Cru Enirt, son of a Marquis. His ability is Pureblood Werewolf, which allows him to transform into a unique werewolf."

"Since you don’t know what a werewolf is, I’ll explain. A werewolf is a disease transmitted by drinking the blood of another werewolf, and it can’t be cured. When a person is infected, they can transform into a large humanoid wolf, which greatly strengthens them, and during a full moon, they become even stronger."

"This all sounds great, but let’s talk about the downsides. All werewolves are extremely aggressive and unable to control their anger. If they stay in werewolf form for too long, it can cause serious health problems. They’re very vulnerable to silver, which is their greatest weakness — even a light cut from a silver sword can cause serious bleeding. And their biggest disadvantage is that if their body becomes overstrained and the werewolf fights too hard, the disease can take control, and the host becomes a mindless beast."

"But Cru’s innate ability removes nearly all of these disadvantages because it’s practically not a disease. The only remaining downside, though significantly weakened, is that he’s still somewhat vulnerable to silver — but it’s not such a big problem for him," Flor explained further.

There was a moment of silence as Flain and Itai processed the information.

"How do you know all this?" Itai asked.

"I did my research before joining the academy to know what kind of students I’d be studying with. Also, when someone in the military gains an innate ability, nearly the entire nobility finds out. Cru is practically a soldier, since nobles and the children of nobles are just more prominent soldiers of the Empire of Light. That’s why they perform various tests and experiments on him so both the user and the Empire can fully understand his abilities," Flor elaborated.

"Flor, you said that all strong Enlightened look young. So why does Gown Wigrem look about 40, and that old man who’s a professor looks about 70?" Flain asked. fгeewёbnoѵel_cσm

Flain assumed that there must be some spell that makes you appear older if you like, while still keeping your youthful body’s strength. Flain wanted to make sure such a spell truly existed, because it could be quite a good spell for changing appearance.

Because since the Skinwalker’s Ring can only hold one slot, and if Flain wants to free it, it destroys the corpse inside, Flain doesn’t exactly like to change it often. So if he wants to be someone else, he simply stays in that body, lets the beard grow out, and he’s a completely different person.

"Well, some strong Enlightened like to look older, so there exists a spell called Aging and also one called Rejuvenation. It’s also widely used when someone wants to disguise their identity," said Flor.

Flain’s theory was confirmed. Then they continued walking through the academy, chatting as they went. They passed through the dining hall, which was a large room with long tables and chairs. Then they passed a shop where spells and techniques were sold. There was only a counter and a big man who was the academy’s merchant.

Next, they passed the classrooms, which were large circular rooms with long circular tables and chairs, and in the center was a low platform, which was the place for the professor.

They moved on to the academy’s central area, where there was a large statue of the Emperor of Light, benches, and a quest board.

Then they went through the garden, which was a large meadow that also served as a classroom. In the center was another statue of the Emperor of Light. On the sides were large Carnivorous Plants that were essentially the guardians of the garden.

After that, they entered another part of the garden where there were houses numbered from 1 to 105. That was the exact number of students who had enrolled in the academy. These houses were essentially rooms — the lower the number and the farther from the academy, the better the room.

Room 105 was five times smaller than Room 1. Room 105 was a small wooden hut that looked like it had holes in it and like no one had lived in it for decades.

On the other hand, Room 1 was a large marble house with golden spots and decorations. It looked more like a palace than a room.

Then they hung around the center of the academy for a while, where there were also small snack shops with free refreshments, so Itai grabbed a few canapés.

Two hours had passed since the tower was completed, and almost all the students had already gathered in the center. The old man was already standing there, and he flew up into the air — it was time to announce the results.

All the students were whispering among themselves and claiming they’d get one of the best rooms. Others admired those with high-ranking parents and wanted to get close to them so they could have powerful friends.

"We’ve counted all the points and selected the talented individuals who will receive high-ranking rooms," he began his speech...
