Demon Prince's Forsaken Bride-Chapter 46: A Mysterious Person (1)
Just like that, he had snatched it away from her hand.
Lareina gasped, pushing to her feet as she turned to glare at him. However, when she reached out to grab the book from his hand, the man lifted his hand higher.
Lareina considered herself to be a tall woman but standing next to him, she was always deemed to seem small.
Azrael had donned a robe over his body, water dripping from his hair. He had removed the scarred mask from his face but part of his disguise was still there, his hair had been curled and the colour of his eyes were altered by spells. Looking down at her, he seemed annoyingly handsome but arrogant to her eyes.
She stopped struggling to reach the book and stepped back to take a seat again. But before she could even move, the chair was occupied.
"These things are of no use. Even if you can find something useful, you would not know how much of it is true,’’ Azrael flipped the pages lazily, ’’Considering that you were stuck on reading two pages...’’
’’I was not...’’
’’Trust me I was standing right behind you. I could tell,’’ Azrael shot her an impassive look and crossed his legs, ’’Since you want to know, I can tell you all that you are curious about.’’
Lareina averted her gaze, looking at the damp towel he had thrown on the bed just before he snatched her chair. She frowned and walked to the bed.
The moment she grabbed the towel, the man spoke up again, ’’Oh, you want to perform your duties as my wife?" he tilted his head to the side, ’’I would reluctantly let you.’’
Lareina’s jaw dropped. In public, she was a drag. In private, she was his wife. Such hypocrisy made her mind itch.
She was about to throw the towel away but seeing his face that seemed to leave no room for negotiations, a glint flashed across her eyes. She clutched the towel and approached him.
Azrael had expected her denial but much to his surprise she walked up to him, stood behind the chair and started drying his hair. However, he soon realized what the woman was up to when she tugged and yanked his hair every once in a while with the towel.
The corner of his lips curled up in amusement.
After going about it for a few minutes, Lareina did not get her desired reaction from the man. It discouraged her a bit and her hand movement grew slow and lax. Suddenly, she felt a grip on her wrist as the man pulled her to stand in front of her.
’’That’s enough. Considering how frail you are, I am worried you would tire yourself to death. Refrain your urges of performing wifely duties from now on,’’ he declared solemnly.
She wanted to laugh. Just who in the world wanted to perform ’wifely duties’ for him?
The man waved his hand gently and magically, his damp hair all dried up in front of her.
Lareina’s jaw dropped.
’’A small spell is all it takes,’’ he said, noticing the disbelief on her face, ’’It is because you showed such eagerness that I could not bear to stop you.’’
Seeing the color on her face changing, Azrael knew she was one step away from exploding so he stopped pushing the woman’s buttons, ’’Didn’t you want to know about ghosts? Why don’t you ask me now?"
The man’s robe was parted at his chest, revealing his pectoral muscles that flexed when he moved.
’’I wouldn’t dare to bother you,’’ Lareina said, averting her gaze.
’’You would dare to despise me but you would not dare to do such trivial things. Who even believes that?’’ he snapped his fingers and another chair at the end of the room was pulled to place right next to his.
Lareina was unwilling to engage in any conversation with this unreasonable person but he seemed like he would genuinely answer her questions, ’’The incident in the ghost market, is that related to this ghost?" 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
’’Those were beasts that we encountered. It is not impossible for it to be related to the said ghost, if that entity is not made up. But then, the ghost or the ghosts here would have to be the powerful spirits if they could cause a beast tide,’’ Azrael closed the book in his hand and turned to look at her, ’’When humans die, their spirits remain in the mortal realm for some time before they enter the reincarnation cycle but not every spirit want to leave the mortal realm. The ones with remaining attachments or resentments refuse to go.’’
Lareina fell in thought.
’’Some of the spirits who stay are harmless while the ones with strong grudges and resentments cultivate themselves into the malevolent ghosts. The case of Cracon mentions the latter, the presence of malevolent ghosts."
Lareina noticed his enunciation of ’ghosts’. So far, she gathered the tidbits of the case from everywhere because even the royal court was not completely aware of the situation despite the crown prince being closely involved in this situation.
Before being known as Ghost Town, Cracon was one of the most prosperous towns in the demon realm. The wealthy demons, merchants and officials, all alike resided here. And it had a large contribution towards the royal treasury as well due to the taxes accumulated. Unlike humans, demons’ treasury was not just limited to finances but manpower, soldiers and horses, all that were groomed in big towns like these.
But the situation in Cracon changed overnight following the appearance of a malevolent ghost or as some people claimed, ghosts. Exorcisms were done but it resulted in nothing. As more and more bizarre incidents happened, people did not dare to step out of their houses. Some wealthy merchants packed their stuff and moved away with their family.
These major changes eventually reached the ears of the demon lord who had been engrossed in the situation of the war that had reached a crucial point. Following Azrael’s victorious return, the demon lord had assigned the crown prince to take this matter in his own hands.
But after nearly a month of being on this mission, the crown prince returned empty handed. And then this hot potato landed on the victorious general and his free plus one, the scorned wife.
Later that night, Rune finally came back from his mission and Azrael left the room after putting on his scarred mask. Lareina was alone in the room again. She walked to the window and let the cool air brush her face but in the darkness, she spotted a figure walking towards the garden area of the inn.
