Chapter 24: Going out

"Your Highness, a sinking boat does not care about the small holes in the bottom of its hull.’’

The insinuation behind her words could not be more obvious for Azrael.

The marriage was in ruins so such small issues did not require attention.

But the demon prince would not be a demon if he straightforwardly admitted to having understood his wife’s metaphors, ’’I don’t understand boat talks, princess. All I demand is if you are in trouble, you come to find me. And if you do not find yourself capable of walking to me, then let me know.’’

She looked at him.

’’I would have ways of making you walk to me.’’

Her lips twitched

After saying his piece, the man sat there quietly and stopped pushing her buttons. He even made himself comfortable and poured himself tea.

Lareina glanced at him quietly. The man had a face that could bewitch one’s soul. Dark thick hair, striking purple eyes, and when he lowered his gaze, his long lashes seemed to cast a shadow. His features seemed to have been carved by an artist with utmost care.

He was perfect in every way. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Until he opened his mouth, ’’That’s right. That is the appropriate way of looking at your husband you haven’t seen in years. The more you look, the more you would come to this realization that you are blessed in every true sense.’’

Suddenly in place of the man, she could see a peacock swaying his tail with full intent. Lareina averted her gaze, wondering how she had not seen this side of the man all those years ago.

Azrael took a few sips of the tea and nodded, ’’This is not bad.’’

She had no intent to respond to him but something suddenly dawned on her. She turned to snatch the cup from his hand.

But he was one step ahead in moving it away.

’’Your Highness, that’s my cup.’’

’’Don’t fret. I do not mind.’’

But I do. Lareina reached for it again.

However, the man pushed himself to his feet, taking away any remaining chance she had in being able to retrieve the cup from his hand.

Lareina was considerably a tall woman but in front of this huge person, she found herself to be small. Questionably small.

Azrael finished the tea in one gulp and placed the cup down on the table. When he looked at her again, his face was still nonchalant as if the person a few moments ago had not been him.

’’We have shared the same wine from your mouth. There is no need for you to be so shy.’’

It would have been fine if he did not mention that incident a few days ago but when he did, her breath hitched momentarily and she froze.

However, her expressions were misunderstood by Azrael whose face darkened a bit. The image of her curled up in the corner of her bed, hunching herself to throw up on the floor, glowed vividly in his mind.

When he mentioned that day, various thoughts appeared in Lareina’s mind. Her memories had been a little fuzzy, more so after she had wine and a lot had transpired that day. She had gone to his room to look for him to clarify whether he really said certain or she was hallucinating but she did not get a chance to see him.

And after the events of the next day, those things were pushed to the back of her head.

’’That day when...’’

She had just started speaking when he cut her off, ’’Don’t bring it up,’’ his tone sharp.

She flinched.

Her reaction made him frown.

Azrael raked his fingers in his hair. There was a permanent line etched between his brows, his rage visible in his narrowed eyes and pursed lips.

He cursed under his breath and looked at her, ’’Be ready in an hour. I would come to pick you up.’’

’’What...’’

The man did not give her a chance to respond. He dropped his words as if they were an ultimatum and then he left the room.

Lareina looked at the book in her hand, her comfortable clothes and her teacup from which he drank the tea. Then, she looked at the direction in which he had left.

Two hours later.

"My Lady, no... You cannot sleep that way...’’

Lareina yawned and leaned back on the headboard of the bed, watching Rosie fretting about endlessly.

’’My Lady, don’t lean back like that. You would end up messing your hair and there would be creases on your dress.’’

Lareina reached out to rub her eyes.

’’And your face too...’’ Rosie quickly muttered, halting her actions, ’’It is your first time going out with His Highness. You cannot be so laid-back about it,’’ she nagged.

When Azrael asked her to get ready in an hour, Lareina considered trying to avoid the situation by pretending to sleep but when she thought of the past few instances where she was dragged through the forests to the cave, she dropped the idea and let Rosie dress her up.

The young demoness was more than pleased to do so as she thought that her mistress was finally gaining the second prince’s favour back.

But now, it had been two hours and Azrael was nowhere to be seen.

’’I think he forgot about it. Maybe I should get changed first,’’ Lareina was decked in an elaborate beige gown that hugged her body tightly, the delicate looking corset squeezing her organs.

"My Lady, it must be that His Highness is trying to be considerate and giving you more time to get ready...’’ Seeing her droopy eyelids, Rosie suggested, ’’Why don’t you take a walk?"

Lareina thought about it for a moment and decided that it sounded good.

Followed by Rosie, she set out to the hallways. However, as one would see it, luck was not on her side.

She had just walked a little distance from her room when Lareina bumped into a person she had not seen in the past few days.
