Chapter 19: Wedding night

’’Princess...’’

’’I did not...’’ Lareina stood up in a fluster, and swung the empty basket to the bed, ’’I was barely tasting one.’’

’’I can tell,’’ the man continued, amusement flickering in his violet eyes as he looked at her fingers and then her face.

When she looked down at her fingers, she realized they were stained in a deep shade of red in the juices of the fruit. She then paused and touched her face instinctively. ’’I...’’

Before she could say a word, she felt a soft touch on her face. She did not realize when the man had come to stand so close to her. In one hand, he held a kerchief, wiping her mouth so gently.

She watched in a daze as the white piece of fabric turned red under his ministrations.

’’You must be hungry,’’ he stepped back from her and then a few servants entered the chamber. They set up a table and filled it with delicacies.

Lareina felt the roughness of his calloused fingers when he held her hand and led her to the table. He pulled the chair for her, made her sit and placed a hand on her shoulder, patting it gently, ’’I have the impression that these should pass off as the delicacies of the human realm. Is that right?"

Probably not. The meat that most of the demons had was either uncooked or partially cooked and crisp. This meat looked like it was cooked but it had no seasonings. The rest of things also seemed like delicacies that the humans had but since it was prepared by demons, it was all different.

’’Your Highness, did you prepare this for me?" she asked and took a small bite of the meat from a corner.

There was no reply for a long time before she heard a faint ’mm’.

’’Ah...’’ Lareina clutched her stomach as a sudden tremor shot through her body.

Azrael, who had been standing behind her chair moved ahead and squatted in front of her, ’’Are you feeling unwell? What is happening?"

She clutched her stomach, unable to utter a single word.

Azrael frowned, ’’Tell me how you are feeling right now. Where does it hurt...’’ He trailed off and after a momentary pause, he said, ’’It should be the fruits.’’

She looked at him in confusion, brows still scrunched in pain. But the next moment, she felt a palm on her stomach. The palm was cold but a thread of warmth seemed to seep in through the layer of clothes, comforting her pain.

Lareina relaxed in the chair but in the next moment, she felt a familiar sensation between her thighs and her entire body stiffened.

The man who had noticed her relaxed expression immediately noticed the change, ’’Not feeling well yet?"

’’I... I...’’ A hint of blush coated her cheeks as she fumbled. These things... She had never discussed it with a man before. Before she came to the demon realm, she had her maidservants and she was never told that she would need to discuss this with a man either.

She was informed that she had to fulfill her duties and the demonesses’ explanation as well as the indecent books of her maid servants back in the royal palace had already given her the impression of what she had to do.

Now, however, ’’I...’’

’’Take a deep breath and tell me whatever it is.’’

He did not lose it as she had expected. Instead, he seemed calm and patient, and even concerned for her.

Her heart skipped a beat in the same note as a dull ache spread through her lower back, telling her that her cycle had begun. After a brief moment, she clutched the edge of the table and spoke up, ’’It is my mo... monthly bleeding.’’

The man pushed himself to his feet and turned around but before he could take a step, he felt a tug on his sleeve.

’’I... I am sorry,’’ Lareina whispered, her voice soft, ’’It was supposed to be our wedding night and I...’’ It was understandable that he would be angry and storm off like this but she had not seen this coming either.

Before she could speak again or try to finish her sentence, the man turned around and lowered himself to her height while she sat on the chair.

She closed her eyes, not knowing what to expect. Was he angry? Would he snap at her?

’’What are you thinking in that little head of yours?" 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

She felt a poke in the middle of her forehead and her eyes snapped open, only to find him stepping back from her.

Lareina stood up slowly, ’’You are... not angry?"

He frowned and she watched the realization settling on his face, ’’You thought I was leaving because I was angry?" Without waiting for her to speak, he lowered his head, ’’I couldn’t tell you are that eager to fulfill the duties of being my wife, Princess,’’ he whispered in her ear.

And her heart raced again, all the blood in her body rushing to her face. Her heartbeats intensified when the man cupped her face in one palm, wrapped his other arm around waist and pulled her close. With his thumb under her chin and his other fingers threading in red hair, he tilted her face and kissed her lips.

The sensation was unfamiliar, so unfamiliar yet she did not want him to stop. When he bit her bottom lips, she gasped and his tongue found the access inside her mouth. Her legs nearly gave away, the pain in her stomach was suddenly not as prominent anymore.

’’We have a long, long time ahead, Princess,’’ he pulled back after a long time, rendering her a little breathless as he whispered against her lips.

She did not meet his gaze. She could not meet his gaze. Her body was acting so strangely that she wanted nothing more than to cling onto him and to not let him go even when he separated himself from her.
