Chapter 24: A Second Rate Actress

"Thank you for coming out on such short notice, I’ll make sure to compensate you heavily for this." Thane announced, while seeing Rachelle off. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

The woman looked behind him at Brooke, "That’s a good woman you picked, I understand why you praised her so much. It’s just like you said, I really did see myself in her." She said referencing to what Thane had told her.

Rachelle had initially refused to take on the job, she planned to announce her retirement and take a step back. But Thane was relentless and insisted he wanted her to make a bag for his woman.

Despite all he had done for her, Rachelle wasn’t ready to become a designer again, but Thane was as persistent as he was handsome.

She still recalled when he said to her.

"Brooke is someone whose eyes shine brighter than the sun. You just need to look at her and see if for yourself. You won’t regret taking on this project, I swear to you."

Rachelle had thought that Thane was just praising his girlfriend, like every lover would. But when she first laid eyes on Brooke, she was stunned to see she was in a wheelchair.

But the look in her eye never dwindled, it was as though her disability never existed the entire time.

"Keep her happy." Rachelle advised.

"I plan to." Thane responded, then took his leave first. Rachelle watched with amusement as the most straight laced man she had ever seen, sauntered over to his lover, just like any regular man would.

And when she saw the way his eyes softened and his lips curved into a warm smile, she chuckled while rolling up the tinted glass, "I wish you both the best." She said then had the driver take her out of the estate.

"I wished she could’ve stayed at least a day longer, she deserves the rest." Brooke huffed, watching the car drive away.

Thane knelt in front of her, matching her line of sight. "How about next time you go see her?"

Brooke’s eyes lit up at the thought, but she immediately dismissed the excitement when she recalled Rachelle’s words.

So he has a woman he loves...

She didn’t want to believe it, but she didn’t want to ask him about it, she felt she would be overstepping her boundaries, especially when she hadn’t been of much use to him.

"Mr Grayson." She called out to him.

Softly, he answered, "Yes?"

Brooke inhaled sharply, mustering up the courage to say, "I’ve made up my mind. I think I’m ready to start the therapy for my leg!" She announced.

The specialists had insisted that she could begin whenever she felt mentally ready, but Brooke had been so scared to give it a try. Of course, Thane assured her that she could take as much time as she needed, but Brooke didn’t want to wait anymore.

That’s right. I didn’t come here to catch feelings, I want to get back at all of them who made my life a living hell!

She thought, steeling her conviction to finally start to get her life in order.

Thane wore a proud smirk. "In that case, I’ll have all the preparations made for you to start immediately."

Cassie stormed into her father’s office, fuming with rage at the recent news she had just heard.

"Daddy! What is the meaning of this?!" She demanded, holding a script over her head.

"Why did you reject the offer for me to co-star in this movie?! When the leading role is Damien Knight?!" She yelled at the top of her lungs.

Luther sighed, he had tasked the staff with making sure Cassie didn’t find out about it, and yet here they were.

"Darling, try to understand. It’s a long term project, you can’t risk taking on any jobs with your health condition." Luther delicately tried to explain.

"Health condition?! I’m perfectly fine!" She argued, failing to catch what her father implied.

Luther pinched his temples, "Cassie my dear, think this through carefully. Do you think our sponsor would be happy to see you acting when you’re still recovering?" He paraphrased, hoping she’d get it.

Since they were at the office, he definitely didn’t want to bring up her pregnancy.

It was only when he mentioned Ethan, that Cassie gasped in realization of what he meant. She rubbed her hand over her stomach, an angry scowl on her face.

"But this movie will be a hit! Damien is inside it, how can I pass this up?" She was on the verge of shedding tears.

But Luther wasn’t about to let a few droplets ruin his business. Aside from the obvious problem, which was Cassie’s pregnancy, he knew Ethan would have a problem with her working with Damien Knight.

It so happened that the company ran by Damien’s family was Ethan’s rival, and although he was ranked higher, the Knight’s business took jabs at his, at every given chance.

Ethan would throw a fit if Cassie co-stared with Damien.

In a low tone, Luther explained, "That’s just the proposal dear. Look at the name of the director and producer, they’re no name people in this industry, trying their luck with hiring an expensive cast. But now that we’ve rejected the offer, I don’t think Damien will accept the role."

Cassie sniffled, "Are you sure he won’t?"

"Even if he did somehow accept, do you think any other actress can hold a candle to you?" He smirked wickedly, "Before the film’s release, we’ll sell information to the press that you were the initial casting for the role. That way, the fans will compare the female lead to you the entire movie. It’ll turn into a disaster."

His words inflated Cassie’s ego, "You’re right." She wiped her tears away, "Where will that director find someone good enough to even compare to me?" She scoffed.

Luther smiled, "That director will end up casting some second rate actress, if I were him, I’d hold off on production until you’re back from your break."

"Yes. That director would be a fool if he casted anyone else! Humph!" She harrumphed, wondering why she ever fretted in the first place.

After all, who in this city could act half as good as she could?
