Chapter 201: The One Pulling The Strings

Oliver stared at the board fixed in his living room, especially at the official statement released alongside the leaked reports about Cassie’s health. He looked over his shoulder at Jen, who was still shaken up, even after changing clothes.

"From these reports, it isn’t possible that it could’ve been Ethan Halton. From what you said, he was covered in blood, and the timelines doesn’t add up." Oliver deduced.

He went on, "And the police have announced that they’re actively searching for the culprit behind the attack on Cassie. I doubt that Ethan Halton would be so careless to attack Cassie at such an important time."

Jen nodded, "I hate to admit it but you’re right, I don’t think Ethan was behind Cassie’s attack. But still, I suspect he was behind something sinister last night, he was covered in too much blood and I doubt it’s his."

Oliver frowned, "That isn’t much to go on with, he’s a calculating man, even now we haven’t gotten any leads on his attack on Avery. I doubt he’d let anyone catch a whiff of his evils deeds so easily. And for all we know, he has people in the police covering his tracks..."

His words went over Jen’s head, cutting him off she stated, "He looked too shaken up, I haven’t seen him like that ever. He must’ve come to my apartment because he didn’t have anywhere else to go. I think, Ethan for the first time ever might’ve made a mistake."

"A mistake?" Oliver’s ears stood up.

She pursued her lips, "It’s hard to be certain, I need to get more clues, but like you said he is cautious. I wouldn’t even know where to start looking."

Oliver’s countenance fell, Jen was right, their investigation was lacking most in any successful leads.

"I wanted to take some of his clothes, but I was afraid he’d check. We were the only two in my apartment, I didn’t want to take any risks." Jen explained.

Taking a seat next to her he passed her the glass of water she hadn’t touched, "That’s smart, if you had tampered with his clothes he would’ve caught on. However, I think it’s worth a shot, searching his car. Like you said, he’s maybe still paranoid, there might be something he missed in his car."

Jen peered at the digital clock sitting on the coffee table, "It’s been an hour, I should head back, he might start to suspect-" Jen was saying, only to stop herself midway.

Oliver noticed the fear in her eyes, "What? What did you just realize?" he tensed up at how pale she just turned.

"The documents..." her eyes went round, "The documents about Brooke, I left them back at my apartment!" she shrieked.

It didn’t take long for Brooke to come shuffling back towards Thane, only moments after she had left. He noticed the slight frown on her face, and could tell something was off.

"What’s wrong?" he asked, taking her by the hand.

Brooke stared at her phone in dismay, "I don’t know, my aunt called me, it seemed like she had something urgent to tell me but the call suddenly got disconnected."

Aunt? Thane was aware of an aunt she had, someone who came up in his investigation, but she didn’t quite pique his interest.

"I didn’t know you two were in contact recently." Thane pointed out, just like Scott, he trusted no one from Brooke’s family.

Brooke shook her head, "It was only recently, and it didn’t seem like a big deal. But now, I’m sort of worried, I tried calling but she isn’t answering."

Pulling her in by the side, he planted a kiss on her head, "I’ll have someone look into her whereabouts and report to you tonight."

Imagining Thane dispatching his resources for such a small matter made her feel embarrassed, "No, there’s no need, she’ll probably reach out to me once she’s less busy."

Thane nodded, "Alright." But he kept a mental note to look into the matter himself.

"Let’s head back, it’s already getting late, and I have a shoot very early in the morning. If I want to get in the director’s good graces, I’ll have to start somewhere." She announced, cutting short their stroll short.

She tried to pull away, but Thane reached for her hand and intertwined it in his. Brooke looked at their hands together and couldn’t bite back her smile.

"The driver won’t be back for another half hour. There was a restaurant close by on our way here, do you want to get some dinner?" he offered.

"I’d like that," she gave his hand a tight squeeze, "I’d like that very much."

Hannah inhaled deeply before she stepped into Tara’s condo. She matched furiously into the living room where her employer was in the middle of going over Brooke’s medical reports.

She folded her arms across her chest, a scowl drawn over her face, "I thought we agreed not to seek me during work hours? Mrs Grayson will be back home anytime soon, I can’t afford to be missing."

Tara tossed the document she was holding at Hannah’s feet, a staunch look of disapproval on her face. "Is this really everything? There’s nothing here I can use to my advantage against that wench."

Crouching down Hannah retorted under her breath, "That only means your scheming is futile, if I were you, I’d throw my resources into something more fruitful."

Tara scoffed, "I really think you’re forgetting you’re just my bitch Hannah, do you of all people have the luxury to lecture others? Have you forgotten why I’m the one pulling the strings here?!" she sharpened her glare.

Calmly, Hannah dusted off the document, "Of course not, how could I ever forget the biggest mistake of my life."

Tara snickered, "Now you call it a regret? You weren’t so miserable carrying out Matthew’s bidding now were you?" she pinched her chin, amused, "I wonder how Thane would react if he ever found out what you did. Or what your precious Brooke would say if she knew you aren’t the good person you’re pretending to be."
