Chapter 196: A Wedding Gift

The first thing that caught Sarah by surprise was seeing Brooke no longer using crutches, she gasped at her niece walking and lunged forward, enveloping her in a tight hug.

"Brooke, you’re walking! Since when? Did Ethan do this?" She whispered softly in staunch disbelief.

Brooke pulled apart and gestured her to sit at the awaiting table, thankfully it was a private room, and Brooke had taken extra measures in making sure no one followed her.

Sitting down she answered, "I don’t know how to tell you this, I don’t even know where to start."

Sarah reached over the table and held Brooke’s hand tightly, "Please, tell me all that happened when I left."

After twenty long minutes of narration, Brooke got Sarah up to speed with the recent developments, but she omitted Thane and everything revolving him.

"You mean, you’re living on your own now? Are you okay? And how will you pay back the loan you took for the prosthetic?" Sarah asked. After a few seconds she suggested, "Why don’t you come live with me?"

Brooke shook her head, and retracted her hand, "I’m fine aunt, and besides I’m not completely alone, I have my roommate Sadie, she’s the female lead of the drama I’m cast in."

Sarah remained conflicted, "That bastard Ethan! You should’ve reported him to the police! How dare he and Cassie cheat you like this?!"

A chuckle escaped Brooke’s lips, "Those sort of people will always get their fair share of Karma handed to them. One way or the other, their actions are starting to catch up to them." Her tone shifted, and Sarah could pick up a sinister undertone in her niece’s voice.

"But, Brooke, Cassie is in the hospital. And she’s pregnant, I know she slept with your husband-" Brooke cut her off.

"My ex, he’s no longer anything to me." Brooke reminded her.

Continuing she said, "I know I’m asking for too much, but your mother is in a bad state, Luther is no where to be seen, and Ethan is clearly avoiding all contact with us. You might be the only one Ethan will speak to..." she tried to reach for her hand again but Brooke avoided her touch.

Standing up, Brooke said, "I only came out of respect for you, and I’ll always cherish you my dear aunt. But please, don’t ask the impossible from me, because I’m not the timid little girl you left behind." She reached into her purse and dropped some cash on the table to cover the bill, before leaving the area.

Sarah reached for the money and frowned, "Where did she get this much money?" she questioned, counting the bills. The money she dropped was enough to pay the fee five times over, but Brooke had given it to her like it was pocket change.

Pinching her chin she thought aloud, "It seems my beloved niece has skeletons in her closet after all..." her words were cut short by a sudden call from the hospital staff. She got up and placed the phone to her ear, she placed the exact fee on the table, before dashing out of the private room.

"What’s the matter?" she asked, hailing a taxi.

After hearing the response on the other end her face brightened up, "Cassie’s awake?!" she voiced out in disbelief. "I’m on my way!"

Meanwhile, Damien was met with a reality check when he arrived at his family’s company just to see Thane Grayson coming out of a board of directors meeting. He charged furiously at him, defensively he blocked his path to the elevator, earning stares from every angle!

"What on Earth do you think you’re doing Damien?! Stop this foolishness at once!" A board member scolded as Damien refused to step aside.

Another said harshly, "Do you know who it is you’re obstructing? Has joining the entertainment industry numbed down your senses?!"

But Damien ignored them, his attention fixed on the indifferent man who carried about an intimidating air about him. He leaned in and whispered, "A word, Mr Grayson?"

Thane leisurely averted his gaze from his phone to the man in front of him, as though he was just noticing him. "And you are?"

"Damien, the son of the owner of this company." He introduced, but Thane did not look the least bit impressed.

"I already aquatinted myself with the owner’s heir in the meeting just now, and I don’t recall seeing you." He replied, his tone listless.

A member swiftly whispered in his ear "Mr Grayson he’s the other son, don’t pay him any mind, he’s just a kid." They said loud enough for Damien to hear it.

Thane chuckled, but his laugh lacked any humor, "Is that so?" he straightened his shirt then threw a question, "Did I invest in a daycare? Why is my time being wasted on humoring an ignorant child?"

Damien hissed, he balled his fist, "Just who the hell do you think you’re talking to-" he balled his fists tightly, as though ready to strike Thane.

Thankfully, his assistant, alongside his elder brother arrived at the scene. His brother dragged Damien away, whilst Damien’s assistant stayed back to apologize for the inconvenience.

The rest of the board stayed back, giving Thane enough room in the elevator.

"Master Grayson, was all this really necessary? You’ve picked a fight with the top male actor, won’t this make work harder for Mrs Grayson?" Gilbert asked as the elevator descended.

Thane remained indifferent, "Picked a fight? I was merely reminding that man of his place." He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

His assistant sighed, "Were your actions not too intentional? He might start to suspect you."

"I believe I have been too passive Gilbert," he scrolled through his contacts until he found an unsaved number. Placing a call, he tilted his head to the side, "It’s high time I start making waves, don’t you agree?"

Gilbert raised a brow, "Master Grayson, what exactly do you have planned?"

The elevator doors parted with a ding, Thane stepped out first, his lips curved into an all knowing grin.

To Gilbert he replied, "I’m off to get my wife a wedding gift."
